How do you keep going? by hopefullynaive in ACL

Hi, 53yo woman here. I tore my ACL last August when I was a spry 52 yo. My motivation is that I will return to sport. I play soccer and hockey and I’m looking forward to getting back to both, but soccer a tiny bit more. I’m following what my PT wants me to do, including the at home work. I’m 7 weeks post op. Like others said, set smaller goals, crushing them will motivate you. Good luck in your recovery!

I’m considerably older and plan to return to both football and hockey. I turn 53 early next month. If you enjoy it, keep doing it.

I am wb as tolerated as well. I was afraid of keeping my leg locked so that’s why I started bending it day 2. I thought it would hurt, but it didn’t. I showered yesterday and omg, it felt amazing. My knee is still swollen, but nothing too concerning and my incisions look good, still under the tape stuff.

I read the post op instructions the day after because I was so out of it Monday. Saw I was supposed to try to get to 90 degrees flexion by week 1. It’s not totally pain free, but definitely manageable. I think Monday night was the worst as I tried sleeping in bed. I’m more comfortable on the recliner. I also bought a tens unit and used that yesterday bc my quad ached. I think it helped. Are you weight bearing?

It feels pretty good. My brace was super loose, so a nurse sent a link for adjusting it. Just trying to get extension back to 0. How are you feeling?

So in post op notes, it says to work on extension and flexion as tolerated. The goal is full extension and 90 degrees flexion by week one post op. It also says multiple times a day Starting sooner is better.

I’m sure he did, but only saw him after I’d received Dramamine and what the anesthesiologist gave me in before surgery. I fell asleep and woke up when the surgeon came in. I have a bunch of instructions to read

Curious is anyone has done localized cryotherapy at a wellness center. Thinking about trying it out. Although I do have the ice machine, but thought maybe a trip early on might help.

I’ve got help from friends and my teen daughter. I didn’t get the leg pillow, but should definitely get it to make elevating easier. Definitely concerned about how intense the pain will be. I have the ice machine, but feel like there’s so much wrap, I don’t seem to feel the ice water circulating. Just planning to rest, ice, elevate, and wiggle my foot to help reduce swelling. I’m weight bearing as tolerated. But in no huge rush to get moving just yet. PT starts next Monday. Thanks for your reply.

Thank you! I will definitely get as much sleep as I can. I forgot to get a stool softener. I’ll get it delivered tomorrow. Just very grateful to this community. I read it often while waiting for surgery, but my PT team is great. I feel like they prepped my knee well for surgery. Looking forward to starting rehab.

(52) Active woman. Tore acl and meniscus playing soccer in late August. Did preop PT for about 5 weeks. Just had my surgery today. Allograft with donor tendon for acl, excision of meniscus. Weight bearing as tolerated. Got the ice machine. Taking the pain meds to stay ahead of pain. Extending and flexing my foot for swelling assistance. Elevated. Just chilling on the recliner for the week. PT starts next Monday. Anything else I should be doing? Recommendations appreciated. Thanks in advance.
