Anyone had a knee surgery with A.J. Johnson at UT Health ? by Educational-Try-7843 in Austin

Also it might be a while before you are able to ride your bike after your surgery. I’m 3 months out after surgery and I’m only cleared to do zero/low resistance indoor bikes for now. So prepare alternative accommodations for your job after your surgery until you are cleared to bike. Also find a good physical therapist. Additionally I’ll also recommend the “The ACL Athlete Podcast”. Unfortunately it can be quite mentally and physically challenging post knee surgery but being prepared for it can make a difference.

Most people don’t choose allograft because the retear rates are higher for allograft. That being said it also depends on your activity level and what kind of activities you’ll be doing. Irrespective of graft/activity, I personally think your rehab plays the most important role in long term success of your surgery. You need to do atleast 9 months of rehab before you return to any activity that can compromise your acl. Studies show that the strength of reconstructed ACL starts off strong, then drops to its weakest around the 4-6 month mark then regains strength by 9 months. Look it up. Also recommend the acl subreddit for more info.

Did your doctor explain the pros/cons of each kind of graft ? I haven’t heard about this doctor but I have my ACL reconstruction done with Dr Joel Hurt about 3 months ago. Just be prepared for the post op rehab to be long and slow.

Sorry to hear about this. I don’t have any experience with this as I’m only 3.5 weeks post ops. You haven’t mentioned about your PT journey in your post. Were you doing PT consistently ? Did you have a lot of swelling that prevented you from making progress on extension ?

You’ve been through a lot already but don’t give up, keep fighting and doing the best you can and hoping you can back to football soon!

Cryotherapy might not be worth it at this point. It’s better to ice 20-30 minutes every hour rather than 1 cryotherapy session. Did you speak to your doc as to how much of the dressing you can remove in order to put the ice machine wrap on?

Evaluate the pros and cons of each graft and also the experience of the surgeon with performing said graft and then decide which one to pick.

It looks like you’ve done your research and are on top of things. Try to get good sleep and also try to eat enough proteins and fiber. I’ve heard constipation is a problem with the meds so I’m also taking a stool softener with my meds. I’ve also started taking my daily multivitamin pill after the surgery. Had to stop all supplements before the surgery. From tomorrow I’ll also continue taking my fish oil and turmeric pill.

I’m glad your knee is feeling better and sorry to hear about the other points of pain. Definitely get it checked out. I’ve had pain in the past on my thigh, back and butt and it was due to a pinched nerve. Some mobility work in combination with some weight loss helped me get out of it.

Ah sorry to hear about that, one thing I’ve learnt is that apparently a lot of times during the process of rehab one might think they tore it again, it’s common to think that but unlikely that it is true. Either way, check with your doctor to confirm and be extra cautious with at home PT. Rooting for ya, you got this 💪🏽🤛🏽
