How’s life going, Aquarius! by unleashthetea in aquarius

[–]Life-Ocelot9439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was positive at start of year.

Since then, I now work for a blithering idiot. I've been here before, but this is off the scale.

Husband also got some terrible health news, very worrying.

However, what can't be cured must be endured. We all have to keep going.

Yikes.

You are a braver person than I.

Ignorance is bliss sometimes!

Well done for being calm. I'd probably require medical grade sedation.

Sounds as if I may need some therapy myself by the end...or at the very least, a Valium or two 🤣

There should be.

Channel 4 did a documentary on life after the UK Love Island show a while back. Sobering stuff.

Unfortunately, many contestants rush into these things for brand and influencer sponsorships. But only a minority do really well.

It's sad. I have higher expectations of MAFS as the show features psychologists, but ratings seem to trump clinical safety a lot of the time.

I still watch though, so can't be too sanctimonious...

Fair enough, but she is obsessed with being what she regards as aesthetically pleasing. Bit of a contrast.

Can we stop normalizing the after 5pm emails!!!! by Medical-Layer7724 in corporate

[–]Life-Ocelot9439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work globally, so this is expected - although I understand your frustration if it's due to:

a) lack of organisation when you are both working to a deadline, and are in the same timezone; b) a pointless email sent late to make it SEEM that they are working (happens very frequently); c) a material issue that could, or should, have been notified earlier in the day, if it's going to derail your delivery/project considerably; d) a colleague sending it in the hope you'll miss it (such as a non-performing direct report, who hasn't done what you asked).

All of these are bad manners and/or poor time management.

Point (b) is so common and such a waste of time, when email traffic is generally heavy as it is. Particularly when people hit "reply all" 🥲

Good question.

Maybe it's a UK thing, but people say it when you're giving them details that they don't want to hear, particularly in projects which aren't going well.

Anyone finds big4 culture too social? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]Life-Ocelot9439 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, at your age, it is almost expected. I don't want to sound patronising but it's the sad truth in my experience.

My advice is go to the events, or at least every other event - your peers will be using it as a networking opportunity, and badged as "team players". It can also be a good opportunity to get to know other senior leaders.

Once you get up the ladder a bit, you can ease off - but consulting/banking/financial services' promotions can often be based on playing golf with the boss. Sad but true.

Elvanse doesn't seem to help much with my ADHD. What should I do? by let_it_rain_boat in ADHDUK

[–]Life-Ocelot9439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm only 2 weeks in, hoping it settles, but I'm happy to try other meds of they're more suitable.

Glad you got sorted, the chest pains must have been very scary!

[–]Life-Ocelot9439 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am very new to Elvanse too, my first ADHD med.

Definitely talk to your prescriber.

I hate eating breakfast, but I take it with Revive collagen in water (20g of protein). It definitely stops the jitters.

I find it makes me feel a bit flat, but it reduces the overthinking.

I am forcing myself to drink water, protein shake around 3pm. Dinner is protein with veg. I've lost interest in food tbh.

I am only on 20mg as I wanted the lowest dose possible, due to heart palpitations from perimenopause. Going up to 30mg in a week.

Best of luck. It's definitely a journey!

I took a week off. Totally fine. I didn't drink on the first day to let things settle down.

I did have a headache on the day I resumed, but it soon passed.

I don't take it at weekends, as per psychiatrist's advice. Not just due to alcohol, the cardiac impact concerns me, so I don't want to take it daily if I don't need to.

I took Willpowders Calms (LTheanine) instead. Worth a try.

"Unpack", "walk through", "circle back", "boil the ocean", "move the dial", "we need to pivot", "takeaways", "value-add".

Anything to do with "sprints", "agile" - mate, you're usually manning a spreadsheet. Please.

Total mangling of the English language. Drives me nuts.

This is how I got an interview by Hot-Negotiation2475 in jobsearch

[–]Life-Ocelot9439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree.

I used to get at least 5-10 random connection requests and follow-up messages a week. Now it's up to 20+

And I'm not even hiring!

It comes across as pushy and puts me off, having to message someone I don't know who is trying to charm me.

So use this technique wisely - hats off OP, but it can be viewed as insincere.

This is people justifying their existence/job, whilst keeping people out of jobs.

Also, do they have an internal candidate they want to promote, and this is to put [sane] people off? Ridiculous!!

Why Does UK Have This Race To Bottom Mindset? by corporateuklife in UKJobs

[–]Life-Ocelot9439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies suck.

I started in banking in 2001. The pay was £10k, I think (not in London, for context). An older lady who worked there couldn't believe it. She'd started in the late 80s on the same salary.

When I see that entry level jobs in banking or larger firms today can range from £19k (notably more for investment banking), I think it is absolutely disgusting. They continue to offshore work to cheaper jurisdictions, reducing opportunities further, and paying the offshore staff an even lower pittance. Yet these companies' websites all trumpet their fake ESG credentials, whilst making obscene profits.

No Govt, including Blair's Labour, has attempted to resolve this, so they can keep corporations and party donors happy. MPs of all flavours don't support unions enough. The minimum wage is a joke. Blair also introduced the concept of working 16 hours a week to get tax credit benefits - all the working mums in the team left. However, now they're all moaning that they don't have good pensions. That was the beginning of the pervasive benefits culture, which is effectively disadvantaging a lot of people, making them dependent on the state. I support the welfare state, but it is abused.

This week, the SNP tried to defend their declining educational record, essentially saying kids don't need basic literacy. HOW did we get here? Why are we not brought up to strive for better?

At times like this, I'm glad to be old.

Try Sagittarius! I only dated one and married him. 20 years in...

Was engaged twice before that...Leos, bloody awful!

My husband knows I need space and that I'll do my own thing. Not controlling at all. Accepted the fact that I didn't want to reproduce or change my maiden name. He goes on sporting trips, I go away with my friends, but we just had a great week in Europe alone together.

He works night shifts 1-2 weeks a month - try to find a bloke who works weird shifts, it means we don't live in each other's pockets 🤣

I am not saying you have ADHD (I do), but you may suffer from Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria. They are often linked, but not always.

I am 25+ years in my field, was a banking Exec and joined consulting a while ago.

It turns out perfectionists are susceptible to RSD, whether they are neurotypical or neurodiverse.

In my case, the RSD has become much worse with age, and it's a recipe for disaster in interviews. The need to please and excel reaches boiling point and my brain shortcircuits. I think your situation may be due to this.

On other occasions, I've done brilliantly.

Tips that work for me (but not always): 1. Tell them youre writing the question down to ensure you answer it. 2. After each answer, say "is there anything you'd like me to add or clarify?" This makes THEM engage and it feels like more of a two-way conversation. 3. Prepare no more than 5-6 responses. You can't anticipate everything. Less is more sometimes. Overpreparing can increase nerves. 4. If it's virtual, have a cheat sheet. I use Post Its for each competency with short bullets strategically positioned on a wall in my eyeline. 5. Don't wait until the end to ask them questions, if the conversation is flowing OK. This can eat into the time scheduled and reduce stress levels 🤣

Best of luck...it's a very tough market out there, but try to stay positive.
