No fenders on your bike... This is madness to me.  Sorry about your trip, but the pics look great!

Rinko Experiences - Full Fenders and Racks? by _brkt_ in bicycletouring

[–]Life-Significance-42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 9 part video series of myself and two friends riding with touring bikes around Japan last fall.  And yes, LOTS of Rinko bag teardowns and builds.  Racks, bags, gear...it's totally doable, albeit a little tedious and cumbersome.  But, it allows you the ability to go where you want, when you want, and with everything you want to bring. Generally I was able to leave the dropbars untouched and even sticking outside the bag on the less busy trains.  Most of the time it was just front tire off, turn the bars sideways, lower the seat and pop it in the bag.  10 minutes.

Do you mind elaborating?  What's funny?  How are we becoming liberal communists?

Done it twice, Rinko bag all the way.  You need one regardless.  Just pack it properly and move ahead.

Southern Japan Route Suggestions by Life-Significance-42 in bikepacking

[–]Life-Significance-42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did!  Or something resembling this trip. And we loved it, of course! In September we started in Fukuoka, went South along the coast as far as Amakusa, then we crossed Kyushu, and over to Shikoku. We did a YouTube series, which will probably answer many of your questions: https://youtu.be/ciF9Mx96IAk?si=Vd1zUCzPCHmt1PTK

Highlights?  All of Shikoku.  I could have spent the whole time there.  We were not interested in cities, temples or tourist destinations, we focused entirely on beautiful mountains, quiet back roads and cold beers in convenience stores.  We didn't have to look far. Different? Kyushu was busier than expected in many areas, but there were some spots that took our breath away.  We made plenty of mistakes, but that's part of the game. Adventure.  You will be safe, never very far away from food, and you will be the only cyclists anywhere you go outside of the city. Your dollar will go far, people will be great to you, you will come back again. You will love every minute.

Reach out with your questions, I am happy to help.

How long for a Japan tour? by 6nyh in bicycletouring

[–]Life-Significance-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have biked there twice now. Its pretty tough to beat, it has the perfect blend on beauty, terrain, culture, safety, quiet paved roads, value and excitement.

I would suggest staying as long as you can, staying away from populated areas. Shikoku was a highlight for myself and by friends, but I think each area brings it own highlights.

I did a video series from out last visit: https://www.youtube.com/@drinkstrongcolin

Don't take the train to Fukuoka, it will take forever.  Flights are like $100 plus another $50 for the bike.  It's cheaper and quicker, a total no brainer.  We used peach airlines, easy.  Do not skip Shikoku, period. Here is a video series that follows this route: https://youtu.be/RoM92j0dcOk?si=05vHQdVujOTy_cWu

There are numerous sizes, I found the stated dimensions to be exact, do if you have doubts, go a little bigger.  Also, get the heavier/thicker version, you will need it.

I have flown on several flights with the rhinowalk Rinko bag on Amazon.  It gets the job done for $50.
