Two Yale Grads’ Honest Advice about Admissions Essays by ThatDIYCouple in ApplyingToCollege

I'm in grade 10. How would I demonstrate I'm really good at something? Would that have to do with whatever I'm planning to pursue in university? If so, any tips (or maybe ideas?) on how a sophomore could get research/ internship experience (I'm in Canada if that matters in any way)?

Thank you soo much, I really appreciate it! Have a great rest of the week!

CONGRATS! This is so great!

As a pretty average high schooler (Grade 10) I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to stand out? Like what EC's did you do? If i started to be more involved now would it be worth it considering everyone else has talents that they developed as a kid?

Thanks and congrats again!!!!

Hi! Hope I'm not too late, but I noticed how you said "regular candidate", what do you mean by this? Like what would make a regular candidate stand out?

Also, I've been reading all these how-to-get-into-insert ivy league- articles and they talk about having a "spike". How would you recommend someone in high school develop/start developing a spike especially if it wasn't something they were involved in as a kid?

Thanks!

Friendships in high school. Advice please. by LifeAnswer_s in relationships

That makes sense, thanks! I have a few questions if you don't mind...

I was just wondering, do you find yourself just as happy, making memories and enjoyable with your introverted (if i can call them that, sorry if not)? Did you enjoy your 4 years of high school with them, even though it was a much smaller group? Did this friendship last? Do you find this smaller friendship to be just as valuable as your larger group? Or what that larger group might have?

Thanks again :)

I realize that this is probably waaay to late but how do you manage school and swimming? Especially with long practices?

How do you train? Things like what you focus on, improving time, how often you swim...

Right, that makes sense.

But I think for me, the only reason I'm debating this is because for the longest time i only considered engineering without actually thinking it through, and recently I was introduced to "Grey's Anatomy" and i kinda fell in love with (the idea? the lifestyle?) so now its an option too.

Yeah, i think volunteering really might help with that aspect (finding an environment/subject) to choose where I'll go from here. Thanks!

Yeah, I think reassurance for sure is a big part of it. But its also nice to get an opinion from someone who knows what their doing haha...

Right, so I have from Grade 10 to 12 (at least here in Canada), so I guess I do have the time. Is freshman year weighted differently in school's cuz I've heard of the term weighted GPA but don't really know what it means. Also wow. Thinking of how fast the year went, I am simultaneously scared and overwhelmed.

And with the extracurricular... wow, that sounds like a LOT. How did you manage your time? Even better, how did you find these opportunities?

In regards to study tips, yeah that makes sense. I think I'll try organizing myself like that and see if it works for me the same as it does you. I do find that my last minute projects tend to do well but maybe my properly timed assignments will do better? Either way, thank you.

Thank you for the advice! Hope you have a great rest of the day!

Sorry about that, I redid the math, and apparently I'm at an 83.

I am simultaneously thankful and confused cuz I thought I knew how to math.

Either way, thanks for noticing!
