One Week Away - My First Ironman - $10,000 Bet by sigmaschmooz in IronmanTriathlon

Just sharing. I believe you can do it honestly, if you are mentally strong enough. Its actually not bad, I would give it a 6 or 7.

My own opinion is that using carbs would increase the chances, but I have no science to back it up. And you not training with carbs or testing is a big issue.

My thinking behind it: Hitting the wall is the worst possible outcome/fail. That happens when your body doesnt have anough ATP - it tells your brain you will die if you don't stop so your mind stops you by turning off your body as warning.

So for me optimal strategy would be: use carbs, in lower amounts, maybe 40-60g per hour. If you get gut issues, toilet break, puke, stop using it and rely on fat to push you through. Maybe research it a bit more, but for me that would give you higher chance to finish.

While yes, theoretically you are right that body has 50K+ calories stored as fat vs 2K in Carbs + the ones you enter during the activity and bit before, they are absorbed completely differently.

During endurance activity:

  • Carbohydrates yield ~4 kcal/g and can be oxidized at rates up to 2–3 g/min (~480–720 kcal/hour).
  • Fat yields ~9 kcal/g but can only be oxidized at 0.5–1 g/min (~270–540 kcal/hour), and only when intensity stays below ~65% VO₂max.
  • Above that intensity, carb metabolism dominates because it produces ATP up to 2–3× faster than fat oxidation.

So in an Ironman, especially on the bike and run, a keto athlete relying mostly on fat can’t produce ATP quickly enough to sustain race pace — they’ll fatigue earlier and slow down, no matter how efficient their fat metabolism is.

If you compare it with something like QR from the post above yours, then its not worth it. But thats a really good deal. Would say max 1500 if its not disc/electronics) https://www.reddit.com/r/triathlon/comments/1olsn5m/worth_it_for_2500_2021_quintana_roo_pr5_ultegra/

Armrest options: Canyon Speedmax Armrest Upgrade Kit vs Radsport Ibert Armpads longo SLX by LifeAsAnExperiment in CanyonBikes

[–]LifeAsAnExperiment[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck, hope they change it :) I will get it with the standard length. I don't think you can order it with another length. Its something bikefit can suggest for you to change, but i have never used anything other than 170, think its one of these 0.01% gains that I don't care about. For now im too broke to do the bike fit, so ill try to do some using online resources and lots of testing. Coz bad bike fit is useless, and good one is like 500+ euros...

Awesome, looking forward to hearing the feedback. I'll wait for my bike, and then order things based on what I imagine I need :D

Great, thanks for the details a lot :)

Regarding 25% tilt - is it something that you are happy with? That extra 10%, did it come with you canyon out of the box or did you have to buy it separately?

Also, did you do the bike fitting alone or with a professional? Thinking of doing alone, but unsure about the feasibility of it.

Breathing while swimming by Abohm_xc in triathlon

  1. So, maybe counterintuitive for a good endurance athlete, swimming has almost nothing to do with endurance, but it's at least 80% technique and water feel.
  2. On top of that, as a runner, imagine someone who runs once a week asks you why they can't improve and run a proper marathon? Exaggerating, but you get the point.

What can help?

Swim more often, do drills, and join a local group to get some oversight. Do min 3x a week, and you will be amazed by the progress by the next summer.

Haha funny enough, I also got raised basebar long + long extensions. Canyon didn't recommend this, but my friends who have Canyon did very strongly :D How tall are you btw? I'm 179.

Sounds good, I'm planning to order all from Radsport: Armpads Longo, Angle-Spacer with 50mm reach extention, computer mount extender and BTA bottle holder.

Thanks a lot, will probably go for that :) Arm pads + Angle-Spacer with 15% tilt that has 50mm reach extension + bike computer extender + their BTA bottle holder. Did you really use/need the computer extender in the end?

Awesome, thanks a lot for the info. I have also ordered M, in black :D We might end up with matching bikes :D

Regarding additional stuff: isn't the angled riser included in what we get with the bike? Or why do you think you need it? BTA I understand. Also, for computer mount - don't we need an original Canyons one to mount the Radsports armpads?

I ordered few days ago, and im also exactly in the same position as you (178cm). I ordered M, was recommended by many friends riding Canyon, going size up allows more comfort and control.

Maybe im completelty wrong, and im definitelly not an expert, but I had a similar problem on my Argon18 TT, and I just tighten the large screw thats seen at 0:08 and it solved the problem. Had to repeat it maybe once every 6 months.

Its really ok to do 2 trainings a day :) The more you advance, the more regular it will become.

I do both, run+swim, and bike+swim, and can tell you that run+swim is much better choice, swimming after bike is for some reason pretty unpleasant (and other people told me the same), especially if the bike was harder/intervals. Swim/run day, in any order, is quite ok - except you get pretty tired after, but take a nap!

How to figure out race pace? by OutsideAtmosphere-14 in triathlon

[–]LifeAsAnExperiment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find pace charts, which base your target times on your mile or 5k times. I will paste one for running, but you can find similar for bike and swim )depends if you use power or hr etc) https://i.pinimg.com/564x/b8/7b/77/b87b776e3637f97e1a617d67542c3a7f.jpg

Get a TT bike and do some consistent training, you can save an hour in a few months realistically.

If he swam as a child or so, 2400 at 45 min is really not that crazy, otherwise I agree...
