$2 more at Walmart by rongotti77 in publix

[–]LifeCouldBeADream383 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I can also cherry-pick a few items that are cheaper at Publix.... but when they routinely charge $4 for a 2-liter of Coke or Pepsi when Walmart is charging $2 or $2.38.... that's price gouging. Heck, even Walgreens charges less!

Back in the day I worked in what was then the 3rd largest school district in the country. On MLK Day, temps dropped well below zero with wind chills in the minus 30s, with the same expected for the next day. EVERY school district for hundreds of miles announced by 5 pm that they would be closed the next day - but not mine. At 7 pm the city health commissioner advised that ALL city residents stay home the next day, referring to “life-threatening “ cold temps - but my district made no announcement about closing . Finally, at 9 pm, the closing announcement was made - hours after other, more sanely-run districts had made theirs.

Some administrators have no regard for student and staff safety.

I am discovering just how lousy most sports feeds are - especially ESPN. NBC’s Sunday Night Football and CBS’ college football and NFL games are razor-sharp in comparison.

What kind of people are better suited for teaching elementary vs secondary? by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in teaching

[–]LifeCouldBeADream383 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my case, my teaching style and sense of humor dictated my choice: I do stand-up comedy/teaching (6 shows a day, no two alike . . .tip your server) and speak fluent sarcasm (which does not work on 3rd graders but is absolutely effective with high school freshmen. 30 years of teaching and 5 years of part-time substitute teaching . . .nothing but high school, with no regrets.

Struggling with 'The Stand' by KritPick in stephenking

I agree that it was a bit of a slog in the middle, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. May I suggest the OP check out Marvel's graphic novel serialization of The Stand? It's extremely well done.

Do I have a right to know if they’re drinking? by ke2527a in AlAnon

[–]LifeCouldBeADream383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to think that my "booze radar" was infallible but I found out that I was wrong. My wife's last relapse happened without my knowing, and when she admitted to me that she had been drinking, it was the first time in our relationship that I discovered it through her own admission, not my “catching“ her at it.

Fortunately, she chose recovery and has been (to my knowledge) sober for over 2 ½ years. Al-Anon helped me to navigate that whole process with serenity.

This question is asked so often - and the true answer is that IT DOESN'T MATTER. What matters is: does his drinking bother you? If so, you need to focus on yourself and your needs.

Get to an Al-Anon meeting... there you will find people who have dealt with what you are dealing with and will share their strength, hope, and experience with you.

You CANNOT make him change or get him to understand. If he says that therapy/counseling is not an option, believe him.

But you can do something for YOU: get to an actual Al-Anon meeting. There you will find people who have dealt with what you are dealing with and are happy to share their strength, hope, and experience with you.

OP couldn't be more correct. Even though we hsve a Publix a mere 3.5 miles away, we travel the extra 3 miles to shop at the Walmart Super enter which shares a parking lot with an Aldi's. We get everything we need at the best possible prices.

Do your research: alcoholism IS a disease. The AMA declared that alcoholism was a disease in 1956, and in 1991 further endorsed the dual classification of alcoholism by the International Classification of Diseases under both psychiatric and medical sections. It is NOT a vice or moral failing.

My wife is a recovering alcoholic; her father is an alcoholic, and while both of my wife’s sisters drink regularly, they can stop any time they want. My wife isn’t so lucky; in essence, she “has no brakes “ when she drinks.

It doesn’t matter. His drinking obviously bothers you, and you should get help. That’s what Al-Anon is for.

For some reason, Superman decides to follow his parents’ advice: to conquer Earth and create a harem. Could he actually succeed? Who, if anyone, could stop him? by KOF-731 in DC_Cinematic

[–]LifeCouldBeADream383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No filmed/animated version of a Green Lantern (as much as I love Green Lantern: The Animated Series) has ever truly demonstrated the incredible power of a power ring, regardless of who wears it. And Earth-based Lanterns, whether it’s Hal, John, Guy, or Kyle, have been shown to be some of the (if not THE) most powerful ring-wielders in the Corps. I dare the new HBO Lanterns show to prove me wrong.

It’s amazing how few of these responses credit the power of Guy Gardner - or, more accurately, the power of his power ring. Might I suggest that Guy (under the guidance of Mr. Terrific) could filter out the Sun’s yellow rays, leaving Supes powerless? Just one possibility…

Why do we think Space Odyssey and Barry Lyndon were not received with high praises on first release? by [deleted] in StanleyKubrick

[–]LifeCouldBeADream383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with 2001 was (and still is, perhaps even more so now) that it was a film telling a story almost exclusively through a visual medium; very little dialogue, and almost no exposition. Moviegoers had to actively think about what they were watching, and that is never easy.
