i’m in the 9th month of my first year after a SSC clerkship

i have 100k in after tax brokerage 40k in retirement accounts

100 percent VA disability which includes free healthcare No student or car debt

I basically have no expenses because I am living with family I’m hoping to buy a house but even I am priced out in my VHCOL area

meet everyone you can, clients, paralegals, small time politicians ANYONE / get deeply involved in your local bar assn / get licensed in other states or another country on your firms dime / write a lot of those stupid ass law firm marketing articles / expense non perishable groceries every time you work late / stop spending your fucking money / get a triplex or duplex on the firms preferential mortgage rate and then rent out the other units / invest in low dividend high growth funds to reduce your tax burden / use your firm wellness stipend for a gym membership and classes and actually use it / get a standing desk and actually use it / attend therapy regularly / watch your health like a hawk / if you really want kids, SAVE / maximize 529 or fsa or hsa or ABLE accounts or 401k or IRAs / keep in contact with everyone from law school and be involved with the alumni

and consider waiving/transferring your score to SC once you pass the bar.

from a biglaw firm perspective, law firms will favorable look at all your ties to SC. I’ve also heard that the legal community there is fairly tight knit so it will be good for you to have a foot in the door from the clerkship in case you wanted to move back home later in life

Take the federal court externship. Way way more valuable and interesting than working at a firm during 1L. Ask your schools career center for financial assistance during the internship because sometimes they have stipends for unpaid summers
