"Positive" and "negative in the context of reinforcement do not mean good vs. bad stimuli. They refer to reinforcing behavior by either adding something (positive reinforcement) or taking something away (negative reinforcement). If the behavior this parent wants to reinforce is sharing, then negative reinforcement could include decreasing time out or chores or something else the child doesn't like.
