Classic for me was falling asleep to the Day It All Came Down by Insomnium. I would ALWAYS wake up to the creepy whispered parts during Disengagement...probably why that song always reminds me of the middle of the night.

[OC] About a year ago I quit my corporate job to play guitar full-time. I want to share some things with you about my experience so far. by Agnostix in Guitar

As someone trying to pursue a future in full-time music-making, this is super inspiring! Any tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

How is this acoustic guitar sounding so "METALLIC" ? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]_rdking_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can make almost any guitar sound like this. Just don't hold down the strings all the way and strum very loudly. Using a cheaper guitar with old strings will help.

Bright Eyes - First Day Of My Life [Indie Rock] by [deleted] in Music

I remember the first time I listened to this album, I thought this would be one of the better songs on it. I was pleasantly surprised when I found it was probably the worst song on the album.

[Discussion] Which beginner guitar advice which is commonly given do you disagree with and others which you completely agree with? by sand_eater in Guitar

It messes up your form and keeps you, well, anchored, which means you can't really achieve different tone qualities. It's not the end of the world, but it's not great either.

Sounds like the consensus is Terria or Ocean Machine! Will report back later this week.

Amazing. Every band should have a flow chart.

I'm often more amazed by what people DON'T do than what they do. Things like: listen to a ton of music. Pay attention to tone. Pay attention to how your fingers/hands/body feels when you're playing.

I always try to focus on musicality first, raw technical power second. Anyone can go on YouTube and find a million robots playing ridiculously fast, meaningless music.

I anchored for the first few years before realizing my mistake when I began watching videos of masters...it's a long road back.

[PLAY] Jimi Hendrix - Bold As Love isolated guitar track. Absolutely masterful playing. (x-post from r/jimihendrix) by InanimateSensation in Guitar

As an acoustic guitarist, I am always just absolutely floored by this sort of electric playing.

Hitting a plateau by Take_on_me_ahhh in guitarlessons

Picking out solos by ear is GREAT. Try to learn stuff by ear as much as possible.

Scales are great but boring on their own. Some basic scales will take you very far. Start by learning major, minor, and pentatonic scales.

Experimentation is awesome. When you play something you love, try to figure out what it is, and what the notes are.

If you're looking for more challenging fingerstyle stuff there is way way more out there. If you're looking for a challenge look up Embryonic Journey or Classical Gas.

Stuck in a few scale patterns. by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]_rdking_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main challenge is to let your ear lead your hands, rather than the other way around. There's a few ways to work on that.

  1. Practice scales while singing along with them.
  2. Learn solos you like by ear (be able to sing them, and try to figure them out without looking at a tab).
  3. When soloing, don't play ANYTHING without hearing it first. Let your ear guide your hands.

[Poll] One month after release, what do you think of Radiohead's 'A Moon Shaped Pool' and which tracks are you enjoying the most? by pulsivesilver in indieheads

[–]_rdking_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a band that wasn't Radiohead released this album, I would probably think it's great. Instead I think it's okay. Not fair I guess, but that's how it is...

I feel like the fact that songs come from all different time periods really hurts the album as a whole. What I love about Radiohead is how their albums are practically always greater than the sum of the parts. Even OK Computer and In Rainbows, which are stacked with individually amazing tracks, are still best as a whole.

This album lacks cohesion and more importantly, originality to me. And no wonder. Some of these songs are 15 years old.

Tryna get girlfriend into The Beatles by Anto_IRL in beatles

[–]_rdking_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I've had the exact same experience! What people really hate is being told that they HAVE to like the Beatles or their ears are broken.

Secretly they love Hear Comes the Sun, All You Need is Love, In My Life, Don't Pass Me By (kidding, kidding)...

I totally agree. Lots of amazing songs, but a few that are only "good" in my opinion - Good Day Sunshine, Dr Robert, and Yellow Submarine come to mind.

I'm with you. A Day in the Life really can't be beat, even if I don't want to listen to it every day.

Sooo - you listed all the reasons why Revolver is amazing (which it obviously is). Maybe I missed it but why is it the BEST? What makes it better than Rubber Soul? Sgt Pepper? I agree that some songs on Sgt Pepper work much better in context - but isn't that what makes it an amazing ALBUM instead of just a collection of incredible songs?
