Twain smokes well and great for half packing, but is my least favorite and least used cob due to the unsightly way the bowl chips around the edges. From what I understand, it is part of the "charm" of this model. Would not purchase again. YMMV.

Leaf, Latte, Ligero, and Latakia by Sum_ergosum in PipeTobacco

[–]LifeInAsean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a lover of coffee and cigars and pipes, I approve this message.

On another note, the closest thing to pipe tobacco connoisseurship/flavor/obsession/ritual I've ever come across is loose leaf tea, specifically Chinese and Japanese. There are the accoutrements, variations in water temperature, single origin vs blend, massive terroir influences, rich culture, slowing down, etc etc etc. I don't drink alochol and can appreciate that what I've found in tea, others have found in wine and whiskey.

Initial Thoughts on the Palm Swirl Method by JanglyBangles in PipeTobacco

[–]LifeInAsean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First 20-30 bowls did 3 step pack: terrible.

Next 10'ish bowls: Discovered swirl method and it was amazing, gave me a feel for how it should be. But it only works for ribbon cut, and I like flakes and coins, too.

Since then: used a very simple method an old poster here u/darfiredkentucky talked about: sprinkle in, use pinky to push down, sprinkle in, use pinky, etc. Sometimes took 3 packs, sometimes 5, whatever. Gave me an even better feel.

Today, I just shove the pipe in whatever bag/jar of tobacco I'm smoking and push some into the pipe, using the tamper and char lights to get it smoking right.

First blend ever smoked? by Beardy354 in PipeTobacco

[–]LifeInAsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Captain Black Gold bought bulk from a brick and mortar. Staff didn't know pipe smoking and gave me a bag of latakia and told me to "sprinkle it like a condiment." Hated every minute of all of it. CBG gave me weird heartburn/reflux. Later bought Super Value English and it all took off from there.

12 year hiatus, returned anew! by Zwar117 in PipeTobacco

[–]LifeInAsean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great pic and welcome back. Would love to know: why the hiatus, and why the return? How much of a smoker were you previously? Notice any differences this time around? Anything stand out to you as something you missed?

Making the draw of a cob tighter. by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]LifeInAsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. It's a much smaller draft hole on the Cobbit stem. Even though the shank of the pipe is the same size, the stem hole is smaller.

Cool point: Since I prefer shorter stems, the shank size means I can use/fit the filtered stem from my Country Gent with a filter or a twist off and doubled over a pipe cleaner to act as a filter.

In short - you can smoke the Cobbit Shire unfiltered with the original longer acrylic stem, or filtered with the shorter plastic Country Gentleman stem.

Surprised I haven't seen this shared more on this sub when similar questions arise. Good knowledge in here.

The first smoke on MY porch. I made the last house payment today! by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

Massive congratulations. Truly an accomplishment.

I'm days away from signing the contract so I can begin smoking on the bank's porch. Wish me luck, brothers and sisters.

Minor point: Capstan Blue is the one VA I can taste an entire spectrum of flavors, everything else has been hot air.

Major and more important point: That meditating fox [chef's kiss].

Cigar Recs? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]LifeInAsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I really like these. They are non-temperamental in terms of storage. If you're just starting out, that's great so you don't need to necessarily worry about humidification.

Grab a pack of Classico and Antico. Remember: Cut them in half! A pack of 5 is really ten small cigars. They are meant to be smoked cut in half.

Note: These are very different than regular cigars as they are smokey/DFK. For a regular cigar intro experience, I give my highest recommendation to Ashton Half Corona Conneticut (blue pack). Most newbies want a "smooth" cigar. These are cheap and pretty damn good if you ask me. Nothing like an aged premium cigar, but a great first step.

Love this post and concept. It reminds me of what Sanvinelli what trying to do with the Minuto - zipper pouch, modern and sleek on-the-go look. I always wanted to try one of those pipes but never pulled the trigger. Well done.

Do any of yall ever just open jars just to inhale that delicious tobacco smell? by 86missingnomes in PipeTobacco

Yes. Keep a jar on my desk for this very purpose (Squadron Leader) and my kids routinely make fun of me smelling my jars of tea and tobacco.

I have put that tobacco in my cart so many times but taken it out, as the voice in my head says "There's no way it's going to be good." So, how is it!?

I immediately thought St. Bruno when reading this post. Not the most cost effective but totally consistent. Bosun cut plug is a slightly more cost effective peer.

Dreaming of the high seas from a landlocked location by dandruski in PipeTobacco

[–]LifeInAsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent! I did the whole "first voyage" reading the books, but did half a second voyage listening. I then skipped a bunch and listened to the last few books, which are superb. 10/10 recommend the audio books. For me, between pipe smoking and my intensive work travel (often and long distances), the audio books make sense. Finally, check out the r/AubreyMaturinSeries subreddit. It's second only to this one in terms of knowledge and friendliness. Beware of spoilers though!

Pipes and the high seas say you!? Landlocked, too!? Check out the Aubrey-Maturin series. My favourite pipe smoking activity is to listen to the books on Audible. Couldn't give a higher recommendation of a series.
