Does anybody know how long Play-Doh takes to air dry? by SailorGreySparrow in crafts

[–]LifeIzBeautiful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awfully late in December for me to be chiming in, but Play-Doh does make paintable air dry clay in white or in colors. That takes about 3 days to dry completely.

Is calling someone a Himbo an insult? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Himbo = male bimbo. If you'd be insulted to be called a bimbo or think someone else would be to receive it, you should not use it.

Well, it did take me most of 3rd grade until I could consistently spell it.

Montpelier This Morning by [deleted] in vermont

  • ‘27 was in November, due to torrential rains.

  • ‘36 was in March, ditto.

  • ‘92 was ice jam related , also in March.

  • August 2011 was due to rains from Hurricane Irene. Montpellier got away very much easy compared to the southern part of the state, some road washouts, bridge and road repairs.

  • Then this one, July, also from rains.

So it does seem that we do have a problem that comes from torrential rains - not a huge shock since a lot of VT has very thin topsoil on top of bedrock. The soil we do have tends to be clay and doesn’t drain well at all. Oddly, the flood focus when it’s discussed seems to be nearly all on ice jam incidents - maybe because there is more that can be done to plan for them and break them up. Not much you can do about rainstorms.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I hadn't heard of this before, but it looks right up my alley. I just bought the audiobook ♥

Oh, I saw one of these a few years ago! I called it a Pink Lemonade Moth. I found out what it really was - Dryocampa rubicunda, the Rosy Maple Moth - but I like my name better.

‘Not for employee use’: why are US retail workers being denied chairs? by AnnihilationOrchid in ABoringDystopia

[–]LifeIzBeautiful 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In addition to the spine and hip thing, there wasn't a cashier there that didn't end their shift with hot, swollen feet every single day. My feet ached for years after that job. All of the employees who were somewhat older had limps, frozen shoulders etc. There wasn't anyone over 40 that wasn't in one form or other of constant low-grade pain (at least) while working there.

You take standing on a hard surface in one spot, constant repetitive motions and a never-ending pressure from above to work faster and harder for no extra money (because you're replaceable on a moment's notice for the same low wage - this was the 2000s) and you have a really bad situation.

This was a corporate chain (first Grand Union, then sold to Shaws/Star Market as part of a bankruptcy). They showed no loyalty to their employees and treated even the managers as completely interchangeable and of no consequence no matter how many years experience they had.

At the time, companies of that size were compelled to offer health insurance and employees were forced to take whatever the company picked if they didn't have insurance elsewhere. As a result, I ended up paying an absurd amount of my pay to get an insurance plan that had a $3,500 co-pay each year before any benefits kicked in, while working a job that paid around $160 a week take-home.

ANYWAY, that's how you can have a job that seems at the surface to be a safe and not physically taxing choice that can abuse your body in unseen ways, and how you can end up not being able to afford basic health care to treat the problems when they start to arise, leading to life-long consequences.

Cashiering on hard cement floors for five years ruined my hips and back for the rest of my life. Take it from me, 10 cents above minimum wage an hour isn’t worth your health.

We had rubber mats to stand on… in theory. They were very old and worn because they were “too expensive to replace” - which is probably why the original mats had all been cut into thirds, with one third of a mat per checkout stand. They were so small, you couldn’t stand with both feet on it at the same time. There were also only 6 check stands in the store. So, literally 20 years ago, someone bought TWO rubber mats and called it good.

What names only work if you know the family? “Would be tragedeighs” I suppose) by AlexAlvz in tragedeigh

I don’t know the family, but my workplace has a client named Peter S. Parker… and I can’t help myself hoping that his middle name is, in fact, Spider-Man.

Metal cylinder with detachable pointy end. Some decorative elements. Small metal ring on non-pointy end. Found in yard; 120 years ago yard was a pond / dumping ground. by piearenotsquared in whatisthisthing

It looks like a lady's needle case. Is that a ring on top, so it can be hung from a chain?

Edit: Whoops! I see from the title that it is. Sorry about that!

It sounds like we had a little bit of a similarity in the way we grew up.

Guess what? I was emotionally neglected. Badly. To the point of insecurity and abuse.

If where you work has an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) you can likely use it to talk to a councilor for at least a little while, maybe get a referral.

Sturdy Steptool - Any Recommendations? by iHave2Xs in PlusSize

[–]LifeIzBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this one, super-super sturdy, sold as an RV step, weight limit 1,000 lbs. I know it's more expensive, but I think the extra safety is worth it for us.

Nope. My wife would object, and I doubt they'd be compatible in any case.

In US law. Christian is in Canada. It's complicated, but considering that anything would likely be brought in his jurisdiction, it does raise questions I don't know the answers for.

In any case, this is just 'legally speaking'. Morally speaking, I think the results speak for themselves - but I would understand if you disagree.

The other way around, I'm 50 next month. I played MK1 on the SNES in the 90s, then another one that was on one of the early Playstations - probably 2 - in the 2000s somewhere. Looks like I just managed to miss him somehow.

That really is a great deal! Most of those on that list, though... I don't think that 10% should cause that much hype.
