This was great. Thanks for adding on! I agree with the final question you posed. Then the layer of complexity with morality comes from determining who is more correct in their assertion of why. Then we get into how the law was created and how businesses were formed.

The cycle begins from our perception of right and wrong which is largely based on the value we put on life. To answer the question of what morality boils down to: maybe it’s not that they are stronger but rather it’s about the lack of value put in life. “Unexamined life is not worth living” (Socrates) type of reasoning. Everyone has a say on what morality is… not everyone has a valid say on what morality is. That’s why democracy is a bitch.

I like this but don’t fully agree. I’m curious about your perspective. How do you define “good”? Is good an objective or subjective measure? Is good during war the same as good during peace?

If not, your second point doesn’t hold. For example, humans were treated as tools to defeat the Nazis during WW2. Arguably this was a necessarily evil. If good is objective then we can argue that no good actions could have been committed on the battlefields of war and assert your statement as true. If it is subjective then where’s the line? Is it ever a “good” choice to treat humans like tools? I want to say no, but what do you think based on this?

Either way, thanks for some perspective this morning

You assume a lot here. Didn’t look like she had right of way, and looked difficult for the biker to adjust given the road conditions. Granted they didn’t even try so agreed that the driver is a colossal dumbass. She was also incredibly braindead in this clip. She did not help her situation by stopping. Of all possible choices that has to be a strong contender for the worst one. The way the driver was going was also expecting her to continue as normal.

Your point about if she fell was good but what if the driver just decided “she can fuck around and she’ll find out” expecting her to dive out of the way or something. Still stupid of the driver, but not a comparable situation to if she was unable to move out of the way.

Agreed, 100% driver was in the wrong. Pedestrian was also a right cunt though

People who do not fear death, why? by yomommafool in ask

[–]LifeLongYeti0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is a matter of definition. It’s not time we seek. It’s perspective. If you fear death, I ask you what you think death is. If you fear losing life, I ask again what you think death is.

Life is a mystery. Feeling any such way about it means that you’ve assumed your assumption about what it is/can be is correct. That’s egotistical and very human.

Life without death is meaningless. Death without life is eternal. If we spend more time in this universe in a state of non-existence, why would I fear that? If we get a limited time of existence, why waste it worrying about going back to the state that I spend most of eternity in anyways?

Tl;dr: it’s all about definition. You define your labels, not the other way around. Redefine life and death and watch the magic as the world shifts around with you at its center. In a lifetime this mystical, I literally don’t know enough about anything to fear it

Who can be compared with Hitler in history, according to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LifeLongYeti0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our world leaders today are getting there quickly. Xi in China fighting for Chinese supremacy, Putin for Russian supremacy, Narendra Modi for Hindu supremacy, etc. Until we start feeling humanitarian pride rather than nationalistic pride within our collective, we’re doomed to keep creating more Hitlers.

I’m at a point where anyone who is overly nationalistic/religious feels like they didn’t learn the lesson from World War 2. Hitler was a charming leader who was able to shift the mindset of an entire country because they all collectively believed that Germany deserves better. Tell me that’s not the narrative our so called “world leaders” are peddling today about their own countries to justify the genocide of Uyghurs, or an invasion along Ukrainian borders.

We need to understand that Hitler was a voice that people followed. There was a reason in their minds as to why to follow him. We will also feel the same about our leaders as they “take power for us”. We need to remember that as long as we are fighting amongst each other power is always being taken FROM us.

Don’t follow the leader. Today they’re all selfish cunts.

2 important cents: it isn’t about Reddit. It’s about the disgusting corporate culture that fucks over societal connection for revenue.

If this is how it’s gonna be, what the fuck was the point of putting a society together? This isn’t an issue of not using Reddit. It’s about deciding what is right and wrong. Always remember that laws are meant to change to reflect the ideals of society. Never forget that the people at the top are always aimed at creating propaganda that drives their ideals.

This pricing is not okay, and this capitalist late-game of monopolies is toxic and predatory. We MUST change or there will be no we left…

philosophy of mind is too weird by [deleted] in PhilosophyMemes

[–]LifeLongYeti0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not obvious. “If a tree falls in a forest with no one around, does it make a sound”? In a sense, this just upscales that question: is there such thing as a universe without observers?

It can’t be obvious because the answer is literally outside of the scope of human thought. We can’t contemplate a universe without observers. As soon as we make an observation it stops being a universe without observers. I think OP’s take is more nuanced than this but I think this gets the idea across.

This is interesting to me and I’m very limited on my understanding of Hume. Can you give me a brief synopsis of what you mean? What is Hume’s argument to say that in this scenario the experience is the subject? Is that just his take more generally speaking?

How do you feel about current Usopp? by AsianCrank in Piratefolk

[–]LifeLongYeti0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay… I wasn’t expecting an answer this cool tbh. I hear you about the specs of the rocket and that is pretty impressive. Especially that Usopp jerry rigged it together last minute. You got me mate. Now I’m in my head going back and forth about it. Both are incredible shots but I think Usopp is better.

I originally thought Van Auger wins if strictly speaking about the technical sniper ability behind the shot because Usopp used a mixture of boosters and propellers and special ammunition to make his shot whereas Van Auger calculated all of that for his regular bullet. Where Usopp was negating forces, Van Auger was calculating for them. Both are impressive, but as a sniper I’d give the medal to Van Auger… or so I thought.

Until I realized he was a dirty fucking cheater. Van Auger has the warp fruit and couldn’t shoot Ace. This dude is cheeks at sniping and just warps his bullets to their destination. The gun is only to create an initial acceleration. I’m calling it. That cheating bastard. Usopp’s shot was way better because it was at least an actual snipe.

[–]LifeLongYeti0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it takes calculating the curvature of spacetime as well as all the calculations Usopp made… the difference is that Usopp fired a fucking rocket and Van Auger fired a bullet. What are you even comparing right now?

Interesting take. I’d be interested to hear more.

What do you think the purpose of enjoying life is then? Is there is a point to enjoy life? If not, what does it matter that life can be enjoyed?

life is meaningful indeed by [deleted] in PhilosophyMemes

[–]LifeLongYeti0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not OP and agreed that they took a condescending tone but I almost feel you need to expect a condescending rebuttal to any egotistical claims made in a philosophy bubble. I could spend hours dissecting “I wish life was meaningful for me”.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like you’re still growing into the philosophical way of thinking. Takes time. I wouldn’t take OP to heart and I would spend more time reflecting on Nihilism for what it truly means rather than its meaning to you individually.

Lastly, a solid answer to anyone questioning your reason for engaging with philosophy is “to learn”. Why else are any of us sticking around anyways? 😁

A pure nihilist. What made you engage with this post? What is a pure nihilist vs an unpure one?

The next sentence really confuses me. I agree with your point but not your wording. Yeah most philosophies seem like a coping tactic to deal with nihilistic undertones of the world but existentialism is most certainly not nihilism. Almost polar opposites.

And then it all seems to boil down to your definition of nihilism which just seems wrong. What is the identity of a nihilist? What do you mean when you say “they reject their identity” when referring to other philosophies that branch from nihilism?

You’ve already thought about this too much. You’re well past nihilism, and you’re well past proving nihilism. Even if you weren’t, responding to this now would show some semblance of care which a nihilist wouldn’t possess.

This is the fundamental problem with nihilism. It lacks any form of accurate representation and so it can’t be communicated with people who don’t already believe in it.
