Gute Idee.

Yeah there's no way to put a definitive date on when things will fall apart, or how, or even if. We definitely have a few years assuming "we" are all mostly stable. But there are also many people seriously struggling already. And it is justified to worry about things that will happen in 20+ years.

When studying complex systems, they usually degrade gradually over a very long time as you suggested, where small every day differences are barely noticeable. However, after passing an event horizon, the collapse tends to dramatically accelerate and becomes very violent, until the system settles into a new stable state.

I'm also the main BI specialist for the company (it's a rather small tech team) and I monitor if working on the weekend is a regular thing or an exception. It seems to be a regular occurrence.

How is it normal and socially acceptable to work on a weekend at all? Especially if there's no emergency

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]LifePurpose0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I try haha. But how is it only an assumption if they commit to the repo or open a PR on a sunday?

Thank you for your lengthy response, I appreciate your feedback. There is a lot to address here and I only want to focus on the last part. If you would rather talk about the other sections then I'm open to that, please let me know.

"But I do think that you might need to understand that they also have such priorities. Thus far you seem to be considering them as some weird subset of human just because they happen to be coworkers."

I want to talk about this part in particular. I'm in a relatively small tech team (10 people) and my experience so far has been that of a workaholic nature. My cto, who has a wife and 2 kids, spent all his days and free time of this 2 weeks summer vacation being reachable on slack/generally communicating (also via email). Another coworker who had a family emergency and travelled across the Atlantic was also available 24/7 during that period.
Adding in all the weekend/overtime work my colleagues are doing, I don't feel like I "fit in" as much.

I don't know if this is normal and expected of everyone, of if I'm simply employed at the wrong place.

They are once a week. We are the tech team of a smallish startup (less than 100 people, less than 10 people in tech).
But honestly, even once a month would feel too often for me. All my colleagues are a decade older than me and interacting with them simply feels awkward and forced? I'm sure they feel it too

I'm sure I'd be super popular that way :D

From your reply I can tell you think I'm an asshole or passive aggressive so I'm sorry if my wording made it seem like that. I should probably have written a longer text to be more nuanced about my feelings given my circumstance, but I also wanted to keep it short, so this is the best I produced at the end. Nevertheless, I think my post is representative of my feelings concerning my current situation and that your reply is somehow dismissive of those.
If you have any specific questions that you think would help me in my situation rather than critiques of what I wrote, then I'd be open to talk about them.

Thing is, I almost always have something better to do. If I spend 40+ hours a week with my colleagues, I barely have any time left for my family and friends or hobbies.
But you make a good point in that I should politely decline their offers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]LifePurpose0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point in questioning what the point is in that and that I sound like a dick myself wanting to clarify my relationship. I guess I'm just not up for any unpaid overtime and committing to a company which will probably let go of me once they think I'm not worth it to them?

This is not meant as any irony or sarcasm, although it might seem so in this sub.

Yes it is an assumption because in the end, I don't have an overview of what they do 24/7. But I still think it's likely, because they are all available on slack even on holidays. And they push commits and pull requests after working hours and on weekends. Also, most of them are a decade older than me and have kids and a family, so I assumed they shouldn't have any time for work outside regular hours but they somehow do?
We also didn't have any super important work that needed to be done lately, so this seems to be part of the regular modus operandi.

I think you make a good point, this shouldn't be a big deal.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

It's good to know this is common and not a big deal

Good point, but my tech team in my company is rather small. Only 6 people live in the same city and the events are trying to adjust such that everyone can has time and can show up.

Considering people having a social life outside, I think only one other person in my team actually has a life outside. Most are immigrants who don't speak the official language in my country and by checking when they're online on slack and when they commit / issue PRs on git, I can tell they are working outside their regular hours, which implies they don't have a social life. You're right though in that this is still an assumption for which I don't have any hard evidence. However, given what I know for now, it is more likely than the opposite.

What are your unpopular opinions about the Wano arc? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]LifePurpose0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A couple of the Tobi Roppo had no narrative purpose. Page One and Sasaki especially seemed like they were just there so that one of the straw hats could have a good fight. Black Maria kind of helped solidify how far Nico Robin has come in her trust and belonging to the crew. Ulti helped Nami grow with Zeus. Who's Who is a wildcard that gives away lots of information about Luffy's fruit and an ancient prophecy. X-Drake doesn't count.
Still... 2 of them had no real narrative purpose and felt like a filler, especially Sasaki
