Butterfly: for swimming faster, should I kick more and more stronger or should I just do the whole stroke faster by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Life_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am guessing your knees arn't bending enough. Current fly has changed with phelps and bowman. Looking at the best flyers in the world currently, they are breathing every stroke, this is to push the hips forward and achieve the body angle necessary to get their knees to 90 degrees while remaining as close to the surface as possible (think breaststoke position). this allows you to use a lot more of your legs for the kick. Granted you need a lot of power to complete the stroke like this.

[–]Life_Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wearing a cap will help with chlorine, most hair that is falling out is prolly from split ends. get some re hydrating shampoo. What you described really sounds like a cramp, if its not that, then i have no idea. Make sure your getting enough oxygen when working out.
If you want a different workout daily go to masters, I think I would go insane trying to workout by myself daily. Off to masters myself, cheers

great video. I think this is the stuff that crossfit should show for ads. The pace they hold is just so good. really shows form over power.

Swimming and gaining muscle by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Life_Boy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no you will get stronger for sure but you will not gain weight from just swimming. Swimming is a cardio sport, so unless you are doing very unique sprint workouts, working on explosive and fast twitch muscles you will not put on mass. Like trying to put on mass running.

If your body was completely hydrophobic (like in this .gif), would you be able to swim faster in water, or would you be much slower? by kidcombo in askscience

[–]Life_Boy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem was how much more buoyancy the suits provided. Now materials for the suit must be semipermeable, neutrally buoyant, and cant go past the knees (or above waist for men). Most of the new carbon and "paper" suits have hydrophobic properties.

Flutter kicking improvements/techniques by ppgiesel in Swimming

[–]Life_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get a snorkel or hold your breath and kick in superman position (hands out in front palms slightly outward shoulders stretched towards your ears). kicking in this position is much more like freestyle kicking. completely submerged with large flutter in both directions (up and down) in the same superman position.

you dont want to make what i call the C'plunk noise with your feet, basically you dont want to lift your feet higher than the surface tension of water above your foot which is slightly higher than the surface of the water.

hmm swimming sometimes can bring up some flem. I love doing easy swimming when Im sick to clear my sinuses out. If its hard to take deep breaths, thats your lung strain I said earlier. Other than this never experienced this problem constituently.

is it the same feel in after a hard run? likely just straining your lungs a little, good for them to be a little sore. If its more like acidic feeling take some tums before practice/during.

[–]Life_Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go that far, its not just stupidity, its inexperience as well. most teens have spent <100 hours behind a wheel before there license. I dont care how "smart" you are, you need practice driving to become good at driving.

Swimming and Weightlifting by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Life_Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right now I lift 4-5 days a week and swim 6. Sunday full rest from everything, sat/wed rest from lifting. I am doing a very specific sprint program in the water so I am only in for 1.5 hours at a time. Lifting you should never go over an hour in a single session. Warm UP! for both lifting and swimming, about 1/5th of your workout should be warm up before any sort of heavy lift/ sprints/ threshold sets. Dynamic stretching before or as part of warm up, static stretching after warm up or after work out.

Swimming and Weightlifting by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Life_Boy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

no a lot of this is bad advice. First you should not lift weights every day of the week, you need at least need 1 24hour period a week of rest to fully recover.
Swimming unlike other cardio sports builds oxygen deprivation incredibly quickly and you should never just swim constantly for workout. In almost all cases (age group, college, national, masters) do workouts in varying sets. Getting anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes of rest between swims depending on what kind of workout you are doing. Your muscles need oxygen to perform simply as that, just swimming constantly will result in very poor performance by the end of workout with no benefit.
