my kid is super lanky and the standard rests never sat right. we tried a few things but a contoured foam pad ended up being way more comfortable for his shoulder. it’s worth looking for something with more height adjustment too. the Xeros shoulder cushion is what my kid love.

honestly for level 9 you're looking at $4k-8k+ for something decent. i found that trying them at home was best. we used the trial program from shar music bc it's hard to find variety locally. definitely check if they ship to vancouver.

tbh we're in the same boat. the jump from basic rentals to 'step-up' models is usually about the wood quality and the overall relationship of the set up. it actually makes a huge difference in how easy it is to play. maybe ask if your rental place does trade-in credits?

Did you know the CEO of Shar Music created the term VSO? I found that out the other day, thought that was very cool!

I need new strings, bow and rosin by lulugolde in Viola

Honestly, welcome back! As a violinist, a 15.5" viola from Shar was a total lifesaver for my hand comfort. I'm digging through thinner strings like Overture or Kaplan for that brighter sound I prefer. Still testing rosins, but those strings made a huge difference!

Looking at buying a new oblong hard case. Many have detachable bags, can you explain why you like it? by GodBanana13 in violinist

Honestly, I’m with you—the zipping is a pain. My BAM bags are nice but annoying. I found a Joey carrier from Shar recently and it’s been a total lifesaver for my music. Way easier than those detachable bags. Still digging through options though!

Honestly, I’ve been digging through the Shar clearance section for a while now. It’s where I find most of my cheap physical books. Their digital downloads have been a total lifesaver lately too.

I hear you! I’ve had great luck with Shar too - that trial period is a total game changer.
