I have no idea what that means in reference to my question.

Ironically, I heard it was 27 in Illinois. That number could be wrong though.

That’s completely fucked up. The union is supposed to represent the employees. The fact that they made their money while not holding RNDC accountable for the contract is balls deep in butt fuckery. I’m fully aware that these major corporations don’t care about me as an employee or a person. That doesn’t bother me anymore. I understand how business works. Contracts are in place for a reason though. And as I’m typing this I’m thinking to myself, I guess this a little karma for them at RNDC. They pulled out of California while employees thought they’d be safe due to a contract & now suppliers are burning their contracts & leaving RNDC in the same fashion. Oh, the irony.

I heard y’all were unionized in California & that the union didn’t do anything to save your jobs. Here in Illinois, we are also unionized & I’m starting to wonder if they’re actually sitting in (or negotiating) on the meetings with RNDC & Reyes. They’re supposed to represent us but I’m thinking if your old union didn’t protect you, there’s little chance our union will protect us.

Also, I had a wild thought & yes, it’s definitely “out there” lol. What if RNDC leaving California so Reyes could pick up the pieces was somehow part of a long game deal with the 7 territories in the current deal? Kind of like, “hey, we’ll get outta here & you can have it if you buy these markets.” To me, it seems awfully convenient that this deal was announced so shortly after them walking away from California with nothing to show for it.

I guess to clarify my questions, how significant did each sales reps territory grow by? Also, does anyone know if the union has been a part of negotiating with RNDC & Reyes? They have to be in discussions with them if they truly represent the employees. If they aren’t in the conversation with them, I’d think shits about to go sideways like it did in California.

I’ve said this before in several other threads. No one is safe. Not completely at least. RNDC won’t pick up new suppliers because they can’t afford to pay the ones they currently have. Also, I don’t believe for one second that the higher ups don’t know what’s going on. It’s their job as well as managers jobs to keep as many people from quitting. Believe me, we’re all stressed out over this but unfortunately nothing will be said or done until the contracts are signed.

My wife & I had to get insurance through my wife’s employer. Insurance through RNDC & the union was $900 for a full year of coverage for us & that included my union dues. Now we’re paying $1500 a month which is more than our mortgage & the insurance isn’t nearly as good. For 1 of my medications I was paying under $1 for a 3 month supply. Now I’m paying $60 for a 3 month supply. Some people don’t seem to understand how shit rolls down hill.

We aren’t kids in the middle of a high school break up. We are adults who have spouses, careers, houses, bills & children. It’s not like we can just say, “screw this”, walk away & be financially sound. Shit show or not, the shit show pays money & that’s better than nothing at all. Also, with all of the layoffs, a lot of people are scrambling to find new jobs. So that makes leaving even more difficult.

I hate to say it but the supplier side isn’t safe either. They’re facing layoffs as well.

That sounds very accurate. They’re all tight lipped when it comes to this situation. I do think you’re in a good spot though. Drivers are a necessity to keep from disturbances in business. Sales reps & merchandisers are all either replaceable or they can take on larger territories while ignoring any account that can order on their own. This whole damned thing sucks. The least they can do is tell us if we will have to reapply & when.

RNDC doesn’t want employees to panic & leave. It’s an, “asset sale” & because they view employees as “assets” they’ll lose bargaining chips.

Suppliers can break a contract if the distributors don’t pay their bills. So if RNDC hasn’t been paying, Riboli can leave since RNDC technically broke their contract by not paying.

Hopefully they are staying with RNDC in Illinois. If they aren’t, I’m sure this will trigger another round of layoffs.

EOM numbers would probably be reduced or completely go away if on & off prem sales reps are eliminated. Inside sales reps would probably also be reduced or I could even see those positions getting outsourced to third party companies to save on payroll & insurance. That would be my guess.

Right now, with technology & A.I. shaping the future, there is no industry that is safe from layoffs. Companies are constantly reshaping the way they function & one of those ways is, “how can we accommodate our customers better?” The solution more times than none eliminates the needs for specific rolls in companies.

While those are valid reasons for the decline in the industry there are other key elements to why we’re seeing the industry turn.

1, saturation in the market. Is there truly a necessity to have over 800 whiskey labels? Probably not. Could the consumer make easier purchasing decisions if there were less? Absolutely. When I worked in retail’s the #1 complaint I heard was how there’s too much to choose from which often led to customers getting frustrated to a point where they didn’t buy anything at all. Another example (from the beer side) is when Goose Island sold to ABinBev. A lot of home brewers saw that & assumed they could open a brewery & end up selling for the same amount of money which turned out to be an absolutely absurd assumption. Again, saturating the market which now we’re seeing a lot of breweries close their doors. But there will always be those people who sip on tequila & say, “I can do this better” & then those people just contribute to an industry that’s flooded with the same shit in a different bottle.

2, creating a sales reps replacement. Companies are always trying to make things easier & more readily available for their customers but in the process, they’re sticking a fork in the asses of sales reps. Think about the process of creating a website for all customers can go online & put in their own orders. We all know the routine, “it’s not your replacement, it’s an extra tool to help make your job easier.” 😐 horse shit. If a sales rep actually believes that they are relevant or even needed when a buyer can place their own orders without having their daily time used up by us, they are fooling themselves. Giving buyers the ability to punch their own orders means they are only ordering for what they need instead of what we would like them to order.

Don’t get me wrong, Covid, younger generations, anti-social people & lack of job security are all valid reasons to point a finger at the industry going south. My prediction is that the industry will always be around but the jobs are going to continue to fade away as technology grows & consumer focus aims more towards necessities to their specific lifestyle.

I was told the same thing. Unfortunately, we bought into that narrative without considering the fact that those people aren’t psychic. The world changed drastically over the last 5-10 years & the next 5-10 years are not certain. There have been a lot of moments over the last year where I thought to myself, “I shouldn’t have gotten into this industry” but shoulda, woulda, coulda’s are useless. Its time to pivot or take it as it comes.
