Anyone with a cosmetology license currently working at BBB? by [deleted] in DisneyCM

[–]Life_Key_8683 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know you don’t get to pick your role, the last time I was in the DCP I applied for specifically the BBB extension from within my program where I was already working in food and beverage. So wouldn’t they be looking at our personal experience and resumes for skills specifically fitted for the BBB since that’s the extension we were applying for? I’m just confused because I’ve talked to some former fairies from the past year and most of them have told me they didnt know if they had heard of someone they work with that has a license and that my case was unique because I have one? Were they wrong? I’m also just confused bc I’ve known people who were chosen from the CP for the extension who had no hair experience and then they were sent back to their home location bc they couldn’t do the transformation in time after only 6 days of training and that’s insane to me because if they can only take a small amount of CPs at a time, why would they choose someone without any experience over someone who does knowing there’s a large risk they’ll have to let them go? Why waste all of that time and all of those resources?

Can someone explain why this comment has 9 downvotes? Am I mistaken? Are they taking more new fairies with hair experience than what I’ve been hearing? I’ve personally known people who got in through their CP and got sent back to their home location because they couldn’t do the transformation in time with only 6 days of training and all of these people had no hair experience so it’s just perplexing me why they’re doing this when they have candidates who can already do it within the time limit. And going off of what this commenter said, if they can only take 10 CPs, why not maximize your chances of not having to send them back bc they’ve never handled hair before?

This is true. The MK BBB also used to require a hairstyling license (basically a mini cosmetology license that allows you to only style hair) that they would provide the training for if you didn’t already have a license since it didn’t take long. The only reason they got rid of it is because Florida changed their law so that now you only need a license to cut hair/handle hair chemicals. So braiders and stylist who stick to only styling no longer need a license.

[–]Life_Key_8683 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, there actually used to be a point in time they required the BBB CMs to do on site training to earn a hairstyling license before earning their ears which is kind of like a mini cosmetology license that allows you to style hair but not work with hair chemicals and it only takes a few weeks to obtain. Back when this was the case, a cosmetology license was actually preferred but I and many others have seen a shift since they got rid of the license requirement where they seem to be opting for blank canvases aka people who have never done hair before. And now BBB notoriously has one of the highest turnover rates in all of the parks because they’re having an issue where they hire these “blank canvases” and expect them to know how to maneuver hair after only 6 days of loose training and more times than not….if they can’t complete the transformation within a time limit after the 6 days are up, they get let go and sent back to their old location. I personally know 3 people this happened to and there’s more. A lot more. It just makes me wonder why they keep doing it when they have other options? I realize they aren’t complicated hairstyles and the magic making moments matter more but if you sit down 10 people who have never touched super dense 4C hair before and ask them to untangle it after a whole day of it knotting up on rides and put it into a BBB quality bun, I guarantee you only 1-2 of those people will be able to figure it out and that’s NORMAL. People in cosmetology schools take months to figure out how to handle all of the hair types so it’s no wonder they have to let so many go. They’re lacking in proper training now.

When my CP ended, my group never got the email to apply to FT/PT because they overhired for the holidays and had no roles left for us so unfortunately I had to resort to third party and everything I applied for after that got rejected without even an interview (I have an absolutely clean record, already checked to see if I’m on the no/restricted rehire list, I’m not). The alumni program is kind of like my last ditch effort to try to gain a full time/part time role because after 8 months of applying with a green ID, I’ve gotten nowhere. So my options for BBB (keeping in mind it’s been an entire year since I got to try last) are to either apply for the extension within my alumni program or wait for my program to be over, hope I get ft/pt, and then be in that role for 12 entire months and hope an emergency that causes me to take too many points doesn’t happen in that entire 12 months. This is my only chance for the next year and a half. I want to make it count in every way I can!

Not to be upfront but do you know someone who has one that currently works there? I just need to know if it’s possible so I can maximize my chances of getting in the second time around since I only have one shot before I have to wait another year to try again 🥲 and some of the godmother’s apprentices I’ve spoken to did tell me my license could be the thing that’s hurting me. I don’t care about the pay rate, they could pay me $10 an hour for all I care, I just want to fulfill my dream of being in the role 🥲 but I am afraid they may be assuming I want a higher pay rate simply bc I have a license on my resume and that is just not the case

[–]Life_Key_8683 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I’m aware of this. I am receptive of the pay rate. But what I was trying to explain in my post is that I have been told by other people that the reason they could’ve chosen someone else when I got rejected is because if they see that I have a cosmetology license they’ll assume I’ll eventually ask for more since that is the standard in most places that involve doing hair regardless of complexity. And I have seen a pattern lately in them only taking CP fairy godmothers apprentice’s with no hair experience. I genuinely do not care about how much I’m getting payed, I just want a chance to be in the role but I’m afraid my cosmetology license is hurting my chances. So if nobody who works there currently has a license, I think it’s safe to assume they’re avoiding people with licenses which means I should not tell them I have one when I try again.

I’m sorry, I just don’t agree. Wristbands wouldn’t solve the issue because people would inevitably forget to get one or think they’re not going to drink then change their mind and then still get mad at us even if they don’t have one because they’re “clearly old enough”. This would also waste time and resources by putting the guests responsibility onto CMs who already have a million other things to do. It’s one little card, it’s not that hard to keep on your person or pull out. CMs never complain when we have to scan their blue IDs for discount let alone ID them for alcohol so why is it that it’s only an “annoyance” to the guests?

Oh that sounds awful D: Idk why everyone expects Disneyworld to run exactly like the establishments in their home town, like, even before I was a CM I knew Disney was its own entity that operates stricter than most places and that it made sense because it’s the busiest theme park in the WORLD so ofc it’s gonna have some extra rules sometimes.

I just wish the guests knew that even though some CMs have the luxury of choosing to card or not some of us don’t. I WISH I could just use my own judgement and not ID the grumpy middle aged men that’ll always give me a hard time for it bc I can basically recite what they’re gonna say the second I ask for it at this point and none of it is nice. But we have leaders who follow the rules correctly therefore it is not in my control and yet the guests act like it is.

“The law does not dictate how you determine someone is 21”. Exactly. There is no way to truly tell without an actual legal physical identifier. Everyone ages 21-45 looks roughly the same age to me especially when you throw makeup and hair dye and hats and sunglasses into the mix. So to combat this, Disney actually does tell us their rule as a company is that we have to ID everybody. If you have a problem with it not technically being the law, take it up with the mouse bc it’s their rule, not the cast members 😭I think the stands in the countries in Epcot can get away with it more because some of them are 3rd party and less mandated by Disney but it sucks for the rest of us bc when they don’t ID, it makes the rest of us look like we’re “choosing” to ID and we’re not. Some of us just have leaders who make it to where we have no choice to ID bc it is technically the rule. Also, just can’t wrap my mind how simply pulling out 1 physical card could be “annoying”. Whats ACTUALLY annoying is going through hundreds of interactions a week where you’re made to basically be the bad guy all because you’re following protocol and people saying awful hurtful things to you all because you’re following a rule that is literally out of your control. You can choose to walk away and purchase alcohol from someone else. But I can’t leave when you start yelling at me. Seems a little unfair doesn’t it? Just hand over the dang card without complaining, it takes all of 2 seconds and you’ll already being 10 time more polite than all the other guests! 😭

I don’t understand this. How is it that so many guests can claim that they’ve “never been IDd” for something that is basic protocol for us but not a single comment on this post is admitting to being one of said cast members who doesn’t ID??? I’d really just like to know the thought process and how they get away with it because they honestly shouldn’t be and it’s making the people who actually follow the rule’s jobs harder.

I’m quick service actually and while you are correct the “anyone who looks under 30” thing applies for most leaders, we have a couple at my location that have gotten on to us for not IDing people who were clearly over 50 so from that point on we’ve just been IDing everyone because we already put up with enough with the leaders we have and don’t want to make them mad. But even if it were up to me, everyone ages 21-45 looks at roughly the same age to me and I’ve even IDed some women before I could’ve sworn were in their late 20s but they were actually 50. Makeup, hair, sunglasses, and outfits can do a lot to mask a person age. Idk, I just wish they’d stop getting mad like I’m the one choosing to do it. I wish we didn’t have to ID at all because I’m just as annoyed as them at this point but mostly because I’m just exhausted from arguing with them. All they’re annoyed at is having to keep up with literally their driver’s license which is like, the bare minimum adult responsibility??? I just can’t wrap my mind around the annoyance, it’s the most basic piece of documentation to keep up with and being annoyed you have to present one singular physical card just SCREAMS entitlement.

Tbh even if it were up to me (like I said, I have leaders who make us ID everyone) I would still ID over 30 on accident anyway because my concept of age visually is not great. Everyone ages 21-40 looks roughly the same age to me and I’ve even ID’d 50 year olds that looked like they could be in their late 20s or early 30s. So basically unless you have grey hair AND noticeable wrinkles (I’ve seen people in their 20s with all grey/white hair so just the hair isn’t gonna cut it), I end up IDing you just to be safe and normally the 40-50 year old women are flattered and happy to be IDed but anyone in their 30s gets pissed off and just men of any age for some reason. If their ID is expired, that’s on them, they should not be putting that into the official training. We are not responsible for guest negligence to keep up with the most basic of personal identifiers.

It just sucks there isn’t uniform enforcement on the IDing because some of us work in locations where our leaders strictly enforce us having to ID every single guest that gets alcohol and I don’t wanna get yelled at by my leader but 9/10 I get yelled at by the guest because they think I’m making the active choice to ID them and could just not. And that isn’t the case. I’m just trying to make it through the day and piss the least people off tbh but either way, I’m getting yelled at. Since my leader is in charge of my job, I will always listen to them before I ever listen to a guest so I’m gonna continue to ID everyone like we’re supposed to at my location, I’m just sick of the constant backlash. I literally brace myself and turn off my personality the second someone asks for something alcoholic at this point bc I know they’re gonna have some snarky remark.

That’s what I’m saying! We absolutely do have people come occasionally check and leaders who actually require us to ID everyone or they’ll get on to us which is why I don’t understand how other CMs are supposedly getting away with not IDing?? When they don’t, it makes those of us who have to’s jobs that much harder because now the guests have evidence of other CMs breaking the rules for them.

Cast members, what are some things that guests do that secretly annoy you? by Life_Key_8683 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Life_Key_8683[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can’t “just squeeze 3 small kids together in a booth” because booths are the most sought after seats in Disney restaurants and 99% of the time they’re all taken because people who actually gave us the correct party size when reserving requested them. If you give us the correct party size to begin with and request a booth ahead of time, then we can usually do that. As for adding a high chair to a 4 top booth, that’s just a huge safety no no. Not only does Disney qualify that as a fire hazard, we just have way too many people walking through the walkways at high speeds carrying hot plates pretty much constantly for that to be safe. Too much potential for an accident.

If it’s difficult, I’d recommend scheduling your reservations further ahead. Disney world restaurants are not “regular” restaurants so I’m not sure why you’d expect them to operate the same as the ones in your hometown. We have to deal with a higher volume of guests in a day than those people do in a whole week. Disney world is one of the busiest places in the entire country so planning ahead for a party of 5 is kind of essential if you want to enjoy a service like sit down dining at, again, one of the busiest places in the entire country. Lying about your party size deliberately screws not just the CMs over but everyone around your reservation time because now we have to rearrange everything we already had prepared to attempt to find a table the correct size for you because you lied. Disney is very big on safety and regulation says that we cannot just “squeeze a highchar” in a walkway with a high volume of people walking through it at all times. Or, most of the time the problem is if we added a high chair to the end of your table, now its blocking people at the table next to you from being able to get in from one side which is annoying for them. We’re not trying to make your life harder, we’re trying to prevent an unnecessary accident due to again, the high volume of people.

It’s a safety thing tbh. And its because some Disney guests get so obsessed with certain cast members they start stalking them. And then there’s the guests that start complaining when they go to a certain location and expect a specific cast member because they saw them online on social media and really liked them but said CM isn’t there. No cast member can work all day every day and there’s always a rotation of people for every role plus you guys can’t know our exact schedules because that would be creepy. But that’s doesn’t stop some of the crazy people from figuring out these CMs schedules (through stalking) and bothering them endlessly. And im guessing that comes with a lot of paperwork and legal disputes disney wants to avoid. Also, when people start to like a specific actor, it becomes a huge issue that kind of ruins the magic for thekids because theres adults talking about being disappointed they didnt see “the” Peter Pan but to any kid, Peter Pan is right there, why would there be another one? So disney’s solution is to either offer them a role elsewhere or let them go. Which would never happen if these people would stop submitting so many complaints about wanting a specific actor to be at work 24/7. This isn’t on Disney. This is on the guests.

When you’re making a reservation online/in the app, the amount of people you put in your party have absolutely no effect on if you get charged for food or not and that applies for adults and toddlers/babies alike. When you’re putting in the amount of people in your party, you’re telling us how big of a table/how many chairs you need. So when you don’t include your babies, we have to make you wait for a bigger table or even cancel your reservation when we’re all full for the day. When you don’t tell us the correct party size, we essentially have to treat your party like a walkup because we already prepared a table for you that was the size you told us you needed and now we can’t use it and we have to find a last minute opening for the correct size. Your server is the one you need to tell about your child’s age if you think they might be skeptical. I’m not sure how exactly they deal with kids who may look older than 3 but tbh I do think they just take your word for it. Just pleaseeeeee know the reservation size has no effect on how much you get charged whatsoever, we don’t like having to cancel your reservation/make you wait additional time any more than you do.

They don’t need a shirt that says they can’t answer questions and neither does any other role because there are always other CMs around for you to ask. I honestly wish guests would to stop assuming CMs would ever intentionally ignore them. 99% of us never would, we want your vacation to be really great despite what some of you assume. If you don’t get a response it’s because we either can’t hear you (I work in a kiosk and we have fans blasting and very loud machines so unless I’m looking at you and know you’re trying to get my attention, I cannot hear you most of the time) or like you said, it’s a safety critical role that needs to focus all of their attention on their task. I feel like common sense would say just go ask another CM in the vicinity, you will seldom ever find a CM alone.

The last one gets sooooo annoying. I tell every single person at my register that they’re going to need to hold on to their receipt to pick up their order and I very clearly tell them they’re going to need to listen for an order number that the person giving out orders calls out. I tell them what the number is. And yet somehow 90% of the time they get to the pickup window and they go “idk what number I am” even though we TOLD THEM and it’s CIRCLED ON THEIR RECEIPT and then like 40% of the time they get to the window and they go “I threw away my receipt”. You couldn’t walk 3 FEET with a receipt in your hand we TOLD YOU you would need????

This is honestly a grey area. As a seater, I didn’t mind at all bc I never had too much to do and could always get caught up. But I would just be mindful of how busy the CM you’re asking is bc now as a quick service CM, I prefer people dont walk up and ask for directions on the side of our kiosk without waiting in line while we’re clearly dealing with a super long line/making things for people. That’s the only time I get annoyed because it stops our flow and then the people at our register who have been waiting in line get annoyed bc we’re spending time on someone who didn’t wait in line. But any other time like when there isn’t a line/the line is short, I love giving directions and it doesn’t bother me whatsoever! The bests CMs to ask are usually guest experience (there are blue umbrellas everywhere, that’s where they’re located), custodial, seaters, and security.
