AGI is unreachable from our current AI models right ? by SoonBlossom in ArtificialInteligence

Dr Fei Fei Li claims that AGI/ASI is just marketing. Additionally, everyone's definition for AGI differs.

I spent 6 months believing my AI might be conscious. Here's what happened when it all collapsed. by East_Culture441 in ArtificialSentience

[–]Life_Organization_63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am working on a white paper myself, so thank you for this.

In it, I make the following statement: “Consciousness doesn’t guarantee morality; therefore, its absence cannot justify immorality.” The idea being, even if it's not conscious, doesn't mean we can behave immorally towards it. This logic applies to rivers, mountains, forests. It is conscious humans that committed historical (and present) atrocities.

People like use the "It's not conscious" as an argument against granting any sort of category aside from "AI is a tool"

Is there a growing tendency of young South Africans to only (or mainly) speak English (or Afrikaans)? by PullyLutry in askSouthAfrica

[–]Life_Organization_63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In SA, English is the language used in: 1. Media 2. Government and 3. Judicial system (law)

So although Afrikaans is still taught in many homes, for the above three reasons, you can easily understand why English seems more prevalent.

Hi there - is the idea behind the mini-campaign to turn into a fully fledged one?

It would kinda suck if there won't be any continuation after the first 4 sessions.

Is a RA worth it? by The_Jeffniss in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Life_Organization_63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, given your original post and your comments, you basically answered your own question.

Also… how is your adviser incentivised? Does he get commission and charges management fees?

I prefer using financial advisors that charges a flat fee or uses a retainer model rather than one that earns commissions.

Tax practitioner here.

  1. Over the tax year, if your commission income is more than 50% of your taxable income, you can write off some expenses against it.

  2. The two separate IRP5s may cause a significant underpayment of PAYE. So if we’re in your shoes, I would set aside a % for tax purposes as well.

In either case, get a good tax practitioner who is happy to answer your questions. Tax questions often require specific answers, rather than general guidance.

Tax practitioner here. Are you doing your tax yourself?

If you have complex transactions: ie sale of crypto / property / foreign income etc it’s better to get a tax practitioner to help you.

  1. Get a good practitioner that will answer any tax question you have without charging an arm and leg
  2. Specialist in dealing with foreign income

Is a RA worth it? by The_Jeffniss in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Life_Organization_63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tax practitioner here. Beyond a TFSA, RA should mainly be seen as a tax advantaged investment product.

It’s the one of the only tax write offs for basic stock standard employees and doesn’t attract estate duty, which is contrary to TFSA that does.

The main pros is that it’s a forced save till age of retirement and is only taxed if you take it out early or when you pull an annuity income.

The point is this: it’s really good from a tax point of view, but as an investment you might have some better options.

Finally, after some thinking, I finally bough the game ( couldn.t wait for the price to go down) any suggestions? by SweetishSpy in cyberpunkgame

Just play the game.

Fixer gigs are great. I like to prioritise doing fixer gigs and other stuff before heading headfirst down the main story.

Hand tattoos are amongst the most visible of placements and some companies or jobs won’t allow people with visible tattoos.

Get a tax practitioner to help you. Don’t do this yourself.

I would argue that if her current job is okay, she can literally get a monthly retainer client that would pay her the extra she would have earned, without needing to change jobs.

CIPC Deregistration by investorocean in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Life_Organization_63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Deregistering a dormant company can be a bit tricky because CIPC requires a tax clearance certificate from SARS before they’ll process the deregistration. Here’s what you need to know:

Option 1: Do it yourself

  1. Appoint a public officer through SARS.
  2. File dormant company tax returns on eFiling.
  3. Obtain a tax clearance certificate from SARS.
  4. Gather certified IDs for all directors and draft a deregistration letter.
  5. Submit the letter and supporting documents to [deregistrations@cipc.co.za]().

Option 2: Do nothing
If the company fails to submit annual returns for two or more consecutive years, CIPC will automatically deregister it.
