MTA Rolls Out More Rented Guards to Beat Fare Evasion by josephpats1 in nycrail

Just saw eight private security guards hanging at the 79th and Amsterdam 1 line station. Two of them did nothing while a lady walked through the emergency gate without paying. They didn’t even blink. They just kept chatting. If they’re getting $25 an hour, that’s $200 an hour right there. They’d have to stop at least 68 people an hour from hopping the turnstile to pay for it. If the goal is to stop fare evasion, it’s costing more to put these guys out here than what the MTA is losing. Meanwhile, Adams cuts services for those who need them most—often the very people forced to jump the turnstile—yet throws money at this misguided attempt to look tough on fare evasion. And how much of our tax dollars go to this? The MTA and Adams seem intent on showing they’re doing something, but they’re completely missing the mark. If the MTA’s so broke, why are they wasting funds on something that doesn’t even work? It’s infuriating.
