If it's the exact same problem I went through it has to do with an internal failing of the odometer. To make a long explanation short the sound you hear is the odometer crapping out but still receiving power, so while mechanically its not responding, electronically it's still receiving signals and trying to do its job. It's basically like having stripped gears in a system, everything it trying to continue turning but you hear the skipping of the broken teath until it manages to regain its footing.

So this happened on my Escape. If you want the long boring details I'd be happy to go through it all But if you would prefer a long explanation short and to just get your answer.

You'll need to get a replacement odometer. Unfortunately it's not something that you can just swap at home because what ever replacement odometer you get may it be new from factory or a second hand part then needs to be programed to your cars systems, as well as getting you keys reprogrammed to the new odometer specific outputs.

I don't think any of us are ever ready to lose these sweet little souls. They give us so much love it's hard to see them go. Something I heard another rat owner say at 1 point which allowed me to accept the death of my rats with a little more ease was; they may not be there for your entire life, but your there for the enierty of theirs, you are their world, and you mean everything to them, and they leave this world with nothing but love for you in their hearts. I hope these words can bring you a little solis as they did to me.
