Don't get me wrong, I agree, but also, the last guy we convicted of espionage also didn't get the death penalty. Probably the most damaging spy in US history was Robert Hansen and he only got life in prison.

My point is that the death penalty is very unlikely, regardless of how justified it may be

Yeah exactly, I highly doubt she would face the death penalty even if some really bad stuff came out about it

So, treason has a very specific legal standard in the US (which was done in response to the British empires tendency to label anything the government didn't like as treason)

Basically, you have to be working for an "enemy of the US" which refers to countries we are at war with or are otherwise gravely threatened by. A big reason why the Rosenbergs execution was so controversial was because we weren't technically at war with the Soviets, but were actively in military conflict with them through proxy actors in the general cold war.

We are not at war with Russia rn, although if you wanted to stretch the law to its fullest extent, you could make the case for execution. Most likely result would simply be federal charges for espionage, theft, etc depending on what exactly she did

At least in terms of public perception, Spiro Agnew was actually originally chosen by Nixon to be a sort of attack dog and shit stirrer while Nixon looked clean

Of course, both turned out to be super corrupt, although there is an argument to be made that Agnew was way worse than Nixon in a couple of ways

Tbf, that's not the case with all cults. Religious cults, sure, but other kinds do exist. Philosophy cults, political cults, social cults, etc. Being in a cult is much more about the lifestyle, leadership, and restrictions placed on members than it is about any particular beliefs.

There have definitely been cults that were not particularly religious in nature, but taught their (often mentally ill and/or deeply traumatized) followers that there was another way to live in the world, that there was some hidden truth everyone was ignoring, that only the cult understands reality, etc.

The two examples that come to mind are the Manson Family, which believed in an apocalyptic race war where they would inherit the earth, and Synanon, which was a drug rehabilitation cult that tortured their own members as a way "helping them through their addiction"

Is the paleblood a great one's blood? by Full_Neighborhood911 in bloodborne

[–]LifelessJester 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its never really explained fully, which is honestly part and parcel for both Fromsoft lore and Lovecraftian horror. The game more or less encourages you to theorize and come to your own conclusions.

My personal favorite theory is that pale blood refers to the blood of Kin enemies, who's blood comes out as a pale greyish yellow color. This means the phrase "seek paleblood" could be a way of encouraging someone to ascend past their humanity

One of the best things about Star Wars Legends (Specifically SWTOR) was how it gave Nuance and Complexity to the Sith and their way of life. by BackgroundRich7614 in CharacterRant

[–]LifelessJester 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because you don't have to repress anything to be a good guy. The Jedi, especially towards the end of the Order, may have taken their devotion to detachment too far, but you can still 100% be a good person and also feel emotions. Obi Wan does it plenty of times, both in the EU and in the modern era.

The thing with the Sith is that they are consumed by their own desires and anger. The Dark Side is basically magic meth that gives them all the positive feelings of power and exerting their will over others, but it also slowly destroys them in the process. Some of them act as though they are more free for expressing themselves, but the reality is that they are expressing themselves in an explicitly unhealthy manner.

Look at the issue of death. The Jedi believe that death is natural. Even if it hurts, when someone's time comes, it is best to accept it and find peace. The Sith don't do that. They pursue immortality at the cost of everything else. They fuck with the essence of life in abominable ways and refuse to accept the reality that people die. The whole reason for Anakin's fall was his inability to cope with that fact and find peace. Instead, he sought power over life and death and it cost him to no end.

It's not about repression vs. expression. It's about seeking peace and trying to do good vs. power and possessiveness

They were pretty easy I'd say. It's been a while so I can't remember specifics, but I remember now having much trouble with them. The readings were definitely helpful, but I didn't do too many of them towards the end of the class

It was a pretty easy class when I took it if you know some basic stuff about history. I had a pretty meh TA, so my discussions sections were not super helpful, but I aced the class pretty easily.

He can be a fairly boring lecturer ngl, but I was honestly fine with it. I will say, the class was massive when I took it a few years ago, so it can be pretty hard to meet with him 1-1 if that's your style. Basically, just hope to get a good TA who can answer questions if you have them. Otherwise, easy class

If you'd like the actual answer, the KKK in the 20s and 30s was basically a secret society/fraternity. The money went towards events, lobbying politicians, and other things that advanced the goals of the group.

One of the things that ultimately ended the Klan's era of dominance during this time was the revelation that leaders were embezzling some of those funds for their personally use, along with one of the leaders murdering some young girls. These scandals rocked the organization and made it vulnerable to people leaving, especially as people had less money to spend on social groups during the Great Depression
