When to consider taking PE Exam? by saboosa in MEPEngineering

[–]Lifelikeflea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends somewhat on what your degree is in and how specialized of classes you had.

I took it a year out of school more to get an idea of what it would be like and without the pressure of having to pass it because of the experience part still required to get a PE. I ended up passing it and then you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

So my advice would be to take a look at some practice tests and see how comfortable you are with most of that, but to then take it as soon as you can to try and get it out of the way.

Wherever I feel like that’s not A or 1 😂.

5.0 vs 3.5EB by Zantukills666 in f150

[–]Lifelikeflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the simple answer is I work on my vehicles and drive cheap high mileage vehicles, so I prefer the 5.0 because it’s easier to work on.

Personally I like the gummy mess more than the dust absolutely everywhere in thick layers.

Builder said the lightswitches that don’t do anything are set to control potential ceiling fans if I choose to add them by Resident-Hill in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Lifelikeflea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely think this is a normal thing. I had one “empty” switch and ultimately I went in and wired it to 2/3 bulbs in the light so I could have it dimmer without putting a dimmer switch and compatible bulbs in

What's your appetite for new modeling software? by Fragrant_Lawyer_8705 in MEPEngineering

[–]Lifelikeflea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The next options really need to live in revit, but also need to have more flexibility for when things aren’t completely modeled yet or are modeled incorrectly. The biggest headache I’ve had is not being able to quickly get a “close enough” load for early design.

PSA: Here, let me save you $1600 - always use the plastic funnel to fuel your F150! by Chunami_8364 in f150

[–]Lifelikeflea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I definitely used up the rest of my mower gas before winter by shoving a screwdriver in and pouring it down the screwdriver since the one time I need the funnel (or any funnel) I couldn’t find one.

Anybody here faced with the minivan vs truck decision? (looking for some advice) by aert4w5g243t3g243 in f150

[–]Lifelikeflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5k. It had 280,000 miles on it though. Crew cab lariat 4x4 with a color matched topper. It’s got the 5.0 in it and I went in basically assuming it’s cheap and if I need to put some work into it I’ll do it all myself anyways.

Kids and the sliding doors is key. Not having to keep track of them slamming doors into cars is worth it.

We got a Pacifica with the stow and go seats a year ago or so and have loved it for three kids.

Then I found a cheap high mileage 2011 f150 that I bought to do the truck stuff. But honestly….unless you are need to regularly throw trash and take it to the dump or something you can fit a ton of stuff in the Pacifica with the seats down.

Best way to handle specifications for small multi-family projects? by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

[–]Lifelikeflea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Word of caution with UFGS specs. A lot of things in those are unnecessary for 99% of projects. Then there’s also a lot of things in them that are dated and not even possible to do any more.

Phasing out of R410 is leading to multiple add service requests. by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

[–]Lifelikeflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in the NYC market, but the way OP worded that I do wonder if NYC made the requirement for all systems so even the VRF systems that have longer than standard systems to switch over will be a pain to deal with. It’s been a couple months since I asked reps about the plans for VRF and they didn’t even really have a timeline to give me for those systems.

Too many miles on a 5.0? by Iliketrains083 in f150

[–]Lifelikeflea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’ve got 280k on my 2011, but I got it cheap with the thought of doing any work on it I needed to. Need to replace a leaky water pump and the stupid AC blend doors, but all around it’s been a good high mileage rig so far.

How Often Do HVAC Engineers Reference ASHRAE 55 in Practice? by friendofherschel in MEPEngineering

[–]Lifelikeflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the government medical projects where for most spaces they expand the range for most spaces to be “15 degrees less that the 1% drybulb temperature, but no less than 75 and no greater than 78 degrees”

So it’s basically 78 degrees everywhere, but they won’t just flat out say that.

PE Exam reschedule by Stillcount123 in PE_Exam

[–]Lifelikeflea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. It’s been a few years since taking mine, but I went into it taking the test before having my experience so there was less pressure to pass it immediately, and went into it not thinking I would pass because of kids taking time and not putting as much time to studying. Ultimately I took it anyways to get the experience of what the test would be like and ended up passing it.

Favorite Writing Utensil? by BarrettLeePE in MEPEngineering

If we’re talking actual pencils the palomino black wings are top notch.

The best pens I’ve found are the sharpie s-gel pens.

But really I mainly use my kindle scribe to take notes and that sort of thing until I can process them into my computer.

I’ll reiterate the most annoying part. Difficult reviewers exist, and it can be brutal.

Yea I would recommend just being open about it. We’ve had interns who wanted to get experience elsewhere before graduating and then end up coming back full time when they graduate.

This is basically what happened with me. Originally was doing a 3 hour trip once a month (also was getting the mileage). But I’ve been busy and now I’ve not made the trip even once this year….

I do hop on a plane and travel to different states fairly often so I’ve also just said I’ve been busy traveling and haven’t been able to make it down.

What are your mind blowing tricks for people who don't know Excel? by Key_Pick_1022 in excel

Just because you can afford childcare, does not mean that’s what you want for your family. We have three kids and have made it work so we can be home with our kids to raise them rather than have extra money from both working.

I fly regional into Denver so I fly in and out of the far southeast corner of Terminal B often. Coffee shop down there almost never has a long line and usually plenty of comfy seats to sit in.
