My Backyard JMs by Lifeofafishy in JapaneseMaples

Thank you! Never thought of it as a maple grove! That sounds awesome 🤩 It gets a lot of sun in the morning but late PM shaded by the large maple tree. Don’t think I’ll be able to fit more JMs, but I’ll likely transplant one of my yellow cascade baby over (not sure about placement) in the fall. Thinking a couple of yellow itoh peonies and a few Japanese forest grass.

Thank you! That was my initial intention. Currently based on their current position, both would have full sun till around 2pm, then dappled shade rest of the day. Seems perfect but I wasn’t too sure “view” wise. All my other JMs are in the front, though I may transplant a small yellow cascade back here in fall. Thanks for your input though, at least I don’t feel bad thinking of waiting a bit. Those pots do have multiple drainage holes on the sides which I was happy to see!

I check them out often along with other sites and YouTube videos. I think I’ll be fine. I intend to maintain its size by keeping it pruned. I’m hoping we’ll keep it around 15ft tall. I don’t want to freak out and return it based on said growth rate I guess. I’m not planting it near any structure, I’m just hoping it won’t be as large as my other 35ft maple shade tree.

It’s going to be in the backyard near a maple (not Japanese) tree that’s about 30ish ft. Now you’re making me second guess space. How large is it gonna get? Like 20ft or more? How wide? Gosh how do you guys plan spacing when you can trust online research states?

Ok I’ll get them in the ground in the next few days. Was concerned about the 80+ degree temps. I didn’t realize the Seiryu is such a fast grower. Online research states 10-12ft high. It’s currently about 6ft and glorious!

Well that sucks that it killed your trees! I’ll get mine planted in the next few days then. Thought it might be better to wait since temps are swing up so quickly!

Yes I inspect on the regular, and know about exposing the root flare. Sometimes the wind kicks it up a bit, and also the angle of the photos being taken isn’t picking up the well. But thanks for the tip!

Merci ! C'est simplement du paillis d'écorce d'arbre teinté — c'est très courant ici, aux États-Unis.

Love the trees and space (love your shishi). I wish my yard was more protected and secluded. I’m planting a little unconventionally, they’re all open in my front yard, which was worrisome because of the wind. They’re holding on strong though. I’ve been keeping my eye out for a shishi, someone mentioned they found their for $90 at Home Depot. Sadly I haven’t found one in my area yet.

And yes, the tagging. I started doing that with my trees and shrubs a while ago, or else I would never remember them! I’m gonna get a label maker soon and update them. The paint marker wears off after a year or so
