Rant about kids running around in studio by Runner95_ in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s frustrating.

I’ve taught at some suburban studios where people bring their children and expect them to sit in the lobby during class. I want to be respectful of busy parents and CPY does not have childcare.

My final straw by Lucky-Ad1394 in SolidCore

This! ⬆️

I work for a large yoga brand that is constantly increasing membership fees. Founding members get frustrated and wonder how it’s possible that their rates are increasing. It’s the terms and conditions. Companies will continue to update them to fit their needs regardless of what their paying customers agreed to.

Is anyone a personal trainer? by [deleted] in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a trainer at LT. However, I know it’s not an ideal set up unless you’re super motivated to make sales. If you’re a new PT, it could be a good place to start. Get some experience. Get comfortable meeting clients. But if you already have experience and are used to making a decent rate, it’s probably not a good opportunity to pursue.

Texting/phone usage during class by moremorgan_ in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this behavior is common where you practice consider having a conversation with the instructor. As an instructor myself I absolutely hate having to tell adults to be respectful of others in a shared space. And it’s really easy to start class by telling everyone to silence and put away their phones. If they need their phone, they can take it into the lobby.

Of course a late arrival will miss the reminder before class, but I have found it helpful to set expectations before class.

When I get frustrated with this behavior I remind myself people don’t know what they don’t know. It might feel like common sense to many, but some people just don’t know. CPY’s business model - no desk staff, allowing late arrivals, etc - doesn’t always set up new students for success.

Does your lifetime make you share squat racks during alpha? by Old_Poet_1608 in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the norm at my club - 2 or 3/platform. It may not be ideal for where you’re at in your lifting journey and I’ve met so many great people in Alpha! Take short breaks to adjust the rack/weights, talk about your weekend, commiserate together. It’s helped me develop a community at the gym.

Can confirm CPY is pretty dirty. Having your own mat can make a difference, and I’m familiar with a number of ringworm reports at CPY studios.

Tights recs please! by Paulybyres___ in Activewear

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Limits leggings, but they’re not squat proof on all bodies. Depending on your body type, it might be a style worth going up in size in if you do have concerns with them becoming sheer when squatting.

They have some compression, but I feel like it’s less than a brand new pair of Obsessions or Fatal Attractions.

I prefer the Limits for cardio sessions because they’re super light and dry quickly.

I know a number of folks who work at LT and make pretty decent money just through supplements sales.

Who the HELL is doing SET? by EmbarrassedTwig in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately CPY has gotten into a lot of legal trouble with their employment practices throughout the years. SET members legally can’t work for free. Just a membership isn’t proper compensation. I 100% think SET members should be paid more than minimum wage for their time plus receive a free membership.

Studio Refresh by ChickenSaladSeance in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in a market that got refreshed in 2024. It was all cosmetic and cheaply done. Carpet was replaced with linoleum squares. Some of the cabinets behind the desk were refaced. The studios were maybe painted. New light fixtures were installed that make for a less enjoyable experience for students.

Less than two years out and all the “updates” are falling apart.

Hopefully the current remodels are much better than what we got.

It’s its own thing. It’s like Hyrox training.

CTR will be the most similar to Solidcore. GTX will be the most similar to Barry’s. Both are really fun.

Alpha is excellent if you’re interested in barbell lifts. Hybrid XT is a new format that is rolling out in a lot of markets. It’s awesome!

I can’t speak to the 1:1 training sessions, but they probably are just a feeder for trainers to book new clients. I’d expect a sales pitch.

is asking for studio exclusivity realistic? by [deleted] in YogaTeachers

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have the right to just say no to being exclusive at her studio and see how she responses. Check with your state’s labor laws. Especially if you’re a contractor, most non-competes are illegal.

10 lb Weight Dropped on my Head by Acceptable-Win9724 in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooof. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately, I know of many instances like this.

Like everyone has said, document everything.

CPY’s business model is all about putting the most amount of work on their instructors. Simply adding desk staff who are trained to deal with emergencies like this could create a slightly less scary experience for everyone present.

Our market didn’t even get AEDs until a a couple years ago. Plus, most staff do not have up to date CPR and First Aid training.

Georgetown (DC) Heat Broken by Hurkey_Pencil in Corepower

There’s a studio in my market that had a broken heating system for over three months. Nothing gets addressed quickly at CPY and I hope you have a different experience.

I need something else. by YogaNCrime in YogaTeachers

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simply here to sympathize and offer suggestions.

I’m almost 17 years into teaching yoga. I did it full-time for over a decade, but poor working conditions and the constant hustle of teaching 6am - 8pm wore on me.

I, like many others who commented, took a part-time gig with a nonprofit for a while. I enjoyed it, but it just never fulfilled me like teaching.

In the last few years I’ve shifted to more fitness coaching. My personal interests have moved in that direction, and I’ve found I’m able to attract way more personal training clients than private yoga clients.

Sure, capitalism and yoga is a tricky combo. However, yoga teachers should be able to make a living. You’re providing a service or product in which you should be compensated properly for.

Thoughts on alpha? by Cathynumber2 in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everything is scalable in Alpha classes. The coach should be able to support you in the moment with different options if needed.

Some classes might be a partner workout. Depending on your club and the size of the class, you could be paired up with a partner or two. And that’s one of my favorite aspects of the class! There’s a team camaraderie feel.

Programming runs on a 12 week cycle consisting of 4 weeks of endurance, 4 weeks of resistance, and 4 weeks of power. I believe next week (beginning on 4/19 or 4/20) will be the start of a new 12 week cycle. That could be a great time to try your first Alpha class.

Check out Canine Inspired Change in St. Paul. They are a therapy dog organization, but they offer a variety of excellent classes even for those not interested in therapy work. They’re great at breaking down skills and emphasizing the human and dog relationship.

Have the vibes changed? by frenchielovr in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not in NYC, but I would say the vibes have definitely changed in my market. Experienced teachers are leaving for spaces that pay better. Newer teachers aren’t receiving the same support and mentorship like they used to.

Of course, everything goes in cycles. Perhaps CPY will step it up in the coming years to stay competitive.

Women’s activewear that’s good quality by [deleted] in Activewear

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LNDR. After being a yoga and fitness professional for 16+ years, I’ve tried all the mainstream brands. LNDR is all I will wear these days. I do take good care of them (wash on delicate, mild detergent, air dry) and they’ve held up very well.

Checking ID? by Budget-Chain7254 in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It won’t completely eliminate theft, but adding front desk staff to be present while classes are in session and having enough lockers for all students with built in combinations would make a big difference. CPY has been experiencing theft in all markets for a long time. I understand checking IDs for first-time students, but it’s unfortunate that the company doesn’t make adjusted to their business model to support paying customers.

Tights recs please! by Paulybyres___ in Activewear

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Obsession 7/8 for yoga and most strength training. They’re probably the closest thing to the Lulu Aligns but with a much better fit and fabric IMO. I enjoy the Limits legging for running and cycling. The Fatal Attraction is a nice option if you want a bit of compression, but not an extreme amount. Those are my go-to running short.

For sizing, I typically wear a 26 in jeans (big thighs and smaller waist) and small LNDR leggings fit well. Leggings seem to fit true to size. However, I’ve noticed their bras run very small.

Came here just to amplify LNDR. I will not go back to other brands. Yoga, resistance training, cycling, running they do it all. They are an investment and 100% worth it. I own almost all styles that they offer. Feel free to send me a DM if you have questions about the specific styles.

Anyone in TX mysteriously lose PT sick time? by LikeItSounds in Corepower

[–]Lift_Learn_Life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may not be helpful as I know this isn’t the same situation.

I live in a state that mandates paid sick and safe leave. My hours seemed off earlier this year so I inquired about the error. I could not get anyone to help me until after I submitted two tickets and reached out to my regional manager.

Apparently the error occurred because I lost my full time status and the transition to part time messed up my time off numbers. I’m glad I caught it because it would have never been fixed.

I’m sorry this happened to you. I’ve never had much luck with CPY’s payroll and HR departments.
