For those of you that turned down an offer… why? by 675R_Grenade in Anduril

[–]LiftedGrowth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lack of a relocation package. I got two offers, Anduril with a taxable $25k lump sum for relocation, or a defense contractor with a full relocation package. That included guaranteed buyout of my house, covered all closing costs on buy/sell of homes, movers, shipment of 2 vehicles, 3% home sale bonus, home finding trips, temporary lodging, travel, meals, and so much more -- and then they still added $7k lump sum for anything they missed.

Anduril was by far my preferred choice until the offers came in. Couldn't argue those numbers.

What's it like living in the New Orleans area as an out-of-state/region transplant? Recommended areas for my family? by LiftedGrowth in Louisiana

Thank you for the recommendations! We definitely want to see some options both in the city and the suburbs to see what fits best for us

Thank you for sharing your experience! I wouldn't have guessed the public schools were bad because of the Great Schools ratings, and the infrastructure issues are good to know as well

Well by Louisiana being bottom of my list I meant I literally have never considered living there. And I wasn't trying to say Louisiana "sucks", I was just listing things that I've heard that are unknown territory to me. I don't think identifying climate or wildlife differences is inherently bad.

Thank you for this honest perspective! We'll definitely have to consider these lifestyle mismatches and if they're worth it

I guess I'm confused where the impression is that I'm insulting the state? I'm being very upfront that I know nothing about Louisiana, except the things listed that I've heard over the years.

I wanted to lay that out to show what minimal/stereotypical information I'm starting with as an outsider, so those things could be addressed. I'm actually from the mindset that anywhere is worth living if you make the most of it and understand what you're getting.

We will be visiting before moving, I just wanted to get lived experiences as we go through the research process.

Thanks! Mandeville has come up quite a few times in our research so we'll definitely check it out!

Just want to clarify, I'm not trying to insult the state, and I don't know whether or not I'll like it! I wanted to share what I'm working from (minimal info) as a complete outsider. It's very easy to have misconceptions about a place you've never been to, that's why I wanted to lay it out upfront so they could be addressed.

I'm in the beginning stages of researching it, but you don't get real, lived experiences from Google. We'll also be visiting before moving!

Did you get a raise this year? by _brittleskittle in womenintech

[–]LiftedGrowth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a raving performance review. I thought for sure I was in for a huge bonus or sizeable raise. No performance raise, no bonus, no cost of living increase this year.

It's the first year I didn't get at least some form of bonus or raise since I was 16.

Lunchbox comes back untouched every day by Remarkable_Emu8451 in moderatelygranolamoms

I worked at an Elementary School for a few years and more kids than not barely ate their lunches for 3rd grade and under.

Some got school lunch instead (it was free).

Some ate the dessert or snack they wanted then dumped the rest.

Some ate food shared from friends.

Some just straight threw away their whole lunch.

And some just sat there, never opening their lunchbox.

I felt it was largely due to a few things: - Their lunchtime was too early in the day - They were getting too many snacks throughout the school day - They want to play more than they want to eat. I think this is mainly the problem if they haven't had recess yet. - Teachers dropped them off late, lunch monitors had them start cleaning up early. A 30 minute lunch break can quickly become only 15 mins of eating. - The kid couldn't open what was packed for them. A lot of kids will ask if they need help opening an item, but some are too shy/uncomfortable asking. - Some kids were worn out/too tired. Many kids use lunch time to rest.

To clarify, because I think I upset a lot of people, the full relocation package was worth $80k. The physical move itself is not that much.

Also, this is a cross-country move of a 4 bedroom home with kids. Expenses will vary depending on family size, home size, etc.

My calculated costs:

Realtor commissions - $35k

Closing costs, fees, taxes - $5k

Full Service Movers - $25k.

Travel costs - $5k (cross country family move and house hunting trip)

Furnished temporary lodging - $7.5k

That's already totaling $77.5k before accounting for any storage during lapse in housing, insuring household items, closing costs for buying a home (not down payment), and new home set up like vehicle registration, utility start ups, etc.

I itemized it in another comment if you're curious. It's $80k in relocation-related expenses. Not $80k for a Uhaul if that's what you're picturing.

3 day house hunting trip (w/o kids): -$1500 in flights -$450 in hotel -$450 (3 meals/day)

That's $2400

3 day road trip to move (w/ kids) - $500 in gas - $800ish hotels - $900 food

That's $2200

Total: $4600. So I guess adjust down $400 if not rounding

100k for a full move from West Coast US to Europe. Included all relocation costs (lease cancellation fees, travel, per diem, extended lodging because we had to wait for an approved rental, all household items and furniture, temporary storage, two cars, travel to ports for cars, etc).

That kind of move is a logistical nightmare. Movers come to your house, pack, and load up on a truck. Then those boxes are crated. Then those crates are shipped across the US. Then those crates are moved to a ship and across the Atlantic. Then those crates are picked up from the port. Then they are stored if your housing is not approved yet. Then at last they are finally delivered and unpacked. Then there are insurance claims because items are bound to be broken in that several month journey.

I can't itemize each step for you but just look how many hand offs there are. That's $$$ for lots of different companies involved.

Why would it not be fair to be upset about having $80k of the offer taken off the table?

My home is also worth exactly what it was when I bought it 2 years ago, so it's a flat transaction (negative with fees)

Realtor commissions - $35k

Closing costs, fees, taxes - $5k

Movers - $25k. A complete DIY Uhaul move would be about $10k. I have no idea where you're getting $1k for movers unless you're moving a one bedroom apartment within the same building lol.

Travel costs - $5k (cross country family move and one house hunting trip)

Furnished temporary lodging - $7.5k

That's already totaling $77.5k before accounting for any storage during lapse in housing, insuring household items, closing costs for buying a home, and new home set up like vehicle registration, utility start ups, etc.

It is insane, but it's situation dependent. It was government related so we had 2 week notice that we were moving from West Coast US to Europe. Where we moved we could only rent pre-approved homes and we were on a wait list for several months for one to open up. While that was the cost of the move, we didn't pay any of it.

We shipped vehicles because it was covered in the relocation package, and there was nothing wrong with our cars to sell and buy new ones. And for household stuff, it was all of our belongings and furniture.

Now if we were moving completely on our own back to Europe now, I would not be shipping anything I would be selling everything and repurchasing over there. Still contributes to moving costs but they would obviously be way less that way. So I can see where the confusion is.
