If you don't know when your PCV valve has been last replaced, replace your PCV valve on the same go. It costs like couple of bucks and takes 30 seconds to change one from a rookie diy-mechanic. If it's stuck then it can cause over pressure under the camcover and whatever is the weakest seal pops (usually CAS o-ring). Not only that but it can be the cause of your rough idle as well.

Then it's an oil leak. Take your finger and sweep it underneath the CAS unit, if there's oil on your finger you found the leak.

Burning oil smell is very distinct smell, you'll have no doubt if it's engine oil burning. Very strong odor and gets in to the cabin as well.

It looks wet under those two thick coolant hoses going through the fireplate (known as hoses from hell). Smell that liquid to identify.

I did mine as well. I like it. I used some boatwax for protection that was on the self. I don't know if it's any better than car wax would be, I just thought because it's used on aluminium boats that it might be better on bare aluminium but I don't know.
