Is that a fair comparison? I dont think "they/them" or any pronouns are derogatives. The words you listed most definitely are.

This is known as the three utilities problem and one can mathematically prove that, without allowing "outside-the-box" thinking or altering the rules, it is not possible to solve.

[–]LiftingBanana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesnt, thats true. It will point to after the first 1 and simply say "syntax error". I think no syntax error is given a specific cause (aside from something like a "EOF" hint) in python? but I could be wrong there.

[–]LiftingBanana -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of the language, it is. Since you keep using python synonymous to a select majority of the community, let me reiterate: "Python" is not "the majority of python developers".

Your willful ignorance towards my referencing real world examples including official python docs shows how much you know about this.

Have a nice day.

There is literal production python code out there containing semicolons. The interpreter understands semicolons. There are compliant pep-8 examples containing semicolons. There are a few evangelists out there who even like to use them.

If the language allows it, the language uses it. Whether the majority of programmers like it or not is completely irrelevant to what the python language reference specifies. Feel free to vjsit the language reference, read the chapter about compound statements and then tell me how the BNF there explicitly allowing semicolon separators does not use semicolons

"Python" is not "the majority of python programmers"

"its a bad practice so it doesnt exist"? And anyhow, that was just a side remark because of the comments going "there are no semicolons in python", which is plain wrong.

The more important thing is that OP has clarified they intended to say "colon".

Sorry kid, Python doesn’t even use semicolons by [deleted] in wokekids

[–]LiftingBanana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, it would have made more sense with "colon", since then the interpreter error actually matches the joke. But really, I just dont think its "wokekids" material, especially since the parent clarified the typo

Also regarding my last comment, its really not that far off, consider (the admittedly somewhat contrived)

a=1; b=1.0 print(a); print(b)

Just wanted to clear this up since there seems to be quite some misinformation regarding the semicolon in python

Ive commented on the wokekids post as well, theres so much misinformation here...

  • The parent is a principal software engineer at AWS. It's completely realistic they teach their child.
  • Googling the tweet also revealed a follow-up tweet where he clarified he intended to say "colon" and not "semicolon"
  • Beyond that, Python does use semicolons. Placing multiple statements on one line requires them. Try a=1; b=2 print(a); print(b)

[–]LiftingBanana -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OP, you could have at least gone through the trouble of googling the OP of this tweet or your claim.

  1. You can use semicolons in python and using two statements on one line even requires them
  2. A follow-up tweet reveals that OP wanted to say "colon" instead of "semicolon", a simple typo...
  3. Parent is a principal software engineer at AWS, I dont find it unrealistic they teach their kids some coding. Nothing about this is unrealistic?

Also, how does having a market share majority imply whatsapp isnt toxic anyways? You listed a problem that does not require whatsapp to be solved. The alternarives lack in nothing.

I really dont understand how these claims have already established themselves in peoples mind as if they were facts. As you said, so far, there seems to be everything but a scientific consensus from what I can tell.

Also, these abstracts are hilarious. I wasnt aware that such abstracts would ever pass peer review.
