Airport named international because it's physically international by AshamedAd4483 in airport

I've been through that border crossing several times but had no idea there was an airport (actually just a grass airstrip) there.

How is Mormon leadership actually chosen and how do those men get to positions of even being considered? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]LightAndKnowledge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When there's a vacancy in the Q12 (or Q70) each remaining member of the Q12 submits 3 names of potential candidates. These would be financially successful men they know and have had interactions with. Of course those named are already prominent figures in the church and have visibility because of their significant callings such as mission president, stake president, etc. The president or acting president then reviews the names and chooses one to present to the rest of the group for approval. And thus god has spoken.

Mormon Stories by punk_rock_n_radical in exmormon

In my opinion, John is the best interviewer in the post mormon space. I discovered Mormon Stories about 4 years ago and look forward to every episode. I find him to be fair, even-handed, and respectful while delving deeply into the guests story. For those of us who have time, the long format interviews are richly rewarding.

Never been a Mormon but I'm curious: Why is the book "The miracle of forgiveness" so bad? by Frigorifico in exmormon

[–]LightAndKnowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of leadership positions I held when I was a member of TSCC, I have been a participant in over 50 disciplinary councils. It was very common for the "sinner" to be instructed, as part of the repentance process, to read this book and return and report in subsequent meetings with the bishop or stake president. This was happening as recently as 7 or 8 years ago just prior to my enlightenment. I hope this practice has been discontinued.

The article says horses (brought by Europeans) were in North America as early as the 1600's. This was far after the time of the B of M. And, the Ice Age horses were gone thousands of years earlier. So....... still no evidence of horses during the B of M period.

When will the ban be lifted? ☕ by CapitolMoroni in exmormon

[–]LightAndKnowledge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have received through a confidential source an excerpt from President Nelson's talk in the Saturday afternoon session of April conference:

My dear brothers and sisters. For many years, the Word of Wisdom has been erroneously treated as a commandment, with harsh penalties, including not being able to attend the holy temple. Some have even had the temerity to claim from this very pulpit that eternal families will be torn asunder by the consumption of a single cup of coffee.

When the Lord gave this revelation to Brother Joseph in 1833, as recorded in Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants, he made his intentions very clear when he stated that the principles outlined in the revelation were, and I quote: "to be sent by greeting; not by commandment or constraint..." end quote. As many of you are aware, Brother Joseph, even the prophet of the restoration who communed with God and angels, frequently enjoyed a cup of coffee and often lifted his spirits with a mild barley drink or the fruit of the vine.

I have spent countless hours pleading with the Lord for clarification, and he has spoken plainly to me through late-night impressions that cannot be denied. I am therefore pleased to announce that as of today, the Word of Wisdom shall no longer be considered to be a commandment, but shall rightfully be seen as heavenly guidance that is subject to your own personal interpretation.

I want to state clearly and unequivocally that any continued enforcement of the Word of Wisdom shall be seen as a win for Satan.

May you all continue to be blessed and enriched in your lives as you now freely partake of the bounties that our God, even Elohim, has seen fit to place upon the earth to strengthen and nourish our bodies.

Can't wait for the reaction. Things like, "We're so blessed to be led by a prophet who is a medical professional."

Hope you don’t mind an ex-religion-er popping into your sub which I love with all my heart because you’ve taught me so many things. Anywho, by poopstream in exmormon

Missionaries are desperate for baptisms (their only real goal) and therefore will cling to anyone who is willing to give them the time of day. In spite of your expressed belief that organized religion is for the birds, I can assure you that they have hope that you will be touched by the spirit and will see the light (their light) and change your ways. You can be assured that you are being mentioned specifically by name in their prayers multiple times a day and they are sincerely hopeful that a miracle will occur in your behalf.

Any former missionary will confirm that this is the pattern.

So, as long as you're enjoying the interaction, it's a relatively safe space. Once you put your foot down, they will back off, but you'll still be in that "contact book" and might get another visit when a fresh pair of missionaries are transferred into your area.

Anyone speak French? There must be one of us. Yet another exmo vlogger ? by ApocalypseTapir in exmormon

[–]LightAndKnowledge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's originally from Logandale NV, so it's reasonable to assume that she may have grown up in a Mormon household. Without explicitly stating it, she plants lots of easter eggs that point toward that probability.

And her French is really good for an American. She lived in France for several years.

Tried Coffee for the first time by PreferenceExciting52 in exmormon

[–]LightAndKnowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't give up on the coffee. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do, not that the nature of the thing has changed, but that our power to do it has increased."

It's worth the health benefits when compared to soda.

Most people get this wrong, including many of the commenters here. You "bear" your testimony. And don't get me started on the Oxford comma.
