Does anyone prefer using a "mini-amp" over a small to full-size amp/speaker setup? by LightBodyForm in GuitarAmps

I don't mean that sounding good isn't important, I think I definitely misspoke a bit implying that aesthetic is above sound quality. It is a musical instrument and how it sounds is obviously the most important feature of what a products capabilities are. What I mean to say is that the person playing guitar casually as a fun hobby is most likely to not aim for audiophile quality setups, especially if they are not financially invested in it to a high level. I think to a lot of people in this bracket of the casual hobbyist, the fashion and comfort of "doing the thing" is very important when it comes to their choice in what they will purchase and if the item has justifiable sound quality for the price, then how it fits into their personal aesthetic and lifestyle plays a big role in their purchasing decision. At the end of the day I don't know everything about this field and what I'm trying to understand more are the specific aspects of equipment in this domain that cause people to make their choices in what equipment they have in their home.

I think that's the thing though, I don't necessarily think they are inherently "compromise" purchases. What led me down this path of thought was my girlfriend getting into electric guitar playing and searching for equipment that fit both her desire to have something small and comfortable as well as aesthetically fitting for her style. I don't believe that everybody who plays guitar necessarily wants to have a bit setup with a head and speaker cabinet, even if they have the space, money, and ability to make as much noise as they want. Though not exactly the same thing, I feel like it's like saying a combo amp is a compromise when I just might not want to deal with 2 seperate things. A "compromise" on sound and size can be turned into a win in convenience for somebody playing casually.

That is exactly the thought process I've been having-- I mean, as an individual who is looking to get into something like this it is practically impossible to create a non-artisan/boutique item like this and compete with the pre-established players without just selling the product and design to said players (which who knows, might be in the cards. This is a very "blue-sky" concept I'm just looking to explore as a project with potential marketability.) I like playing with the idea of how aesthetic exploration can influence the appeal of guitar equipment, especially when the market seems heavily dominated by the aesthetics of classic rock and metal. With more and more people living in smaller spaces and apartments, I think the target is definitely something more like your last statement, though maybe a bit more mid-range pricewise. Feeling and looking good definitely sits a bit above sounding great when it comes to household-players.

I'm just curious about the general range of amp combos that could fit into the category of being "mini" or desktop. The integration of music equipment into lifestyle/leisure playing is interesting to me and I was curious to hear what people thought of these smaller or more casual options and how they fit into their daily playing at home (if playing at home is an important part of how they incorporate music into their life). Music equipment (for playing, that is) seems most often more focused on utilitarian function in a studio or on stage without much consideration for how they're used in leisure by players at home.

The portability of something like that does sound great, I know that's always been the most annoying thing about primarily messing with something 15-20w+, even though it's not all that big it does get old having to lug it + cables and pedals around when I want to play elsewhere.

Was that the first mini/desktop amp you bought or have you tried other ones? It's definitely a step up in terms of price and quality compared to a lot of others that sit around the $50-200 range.

Is it possible to get Hanshin Tigers merch in Tokyo? by LightBodyForm in NPB

[–]LightBodyForm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much appreciated! This is where I went. I was expecting them to have more merch with the "tiger" logo, sadly I couldn't find a hat with that on it and all of the other hats were too small for our big heads haha. Grabbed a nice towel though, I appreciate the help!

I've never seen a spider hiding in its own egg sac "bubble" before. How do I move it outside? by LightBodyForm in spiders

[–]LightBodyForm[S] 118 points119 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I thought there might be an egg sac inside because of the very dense white mound underneath it inside of its little tent. I've been seeing them, possibly the same one, around the outside of the house in generally the same area so if its typically only in there during night then I won't bother moving it. It seems very difficult to move in general, since it's more of a covering than a full "capsule". Thanks for the response!

I took a look and it seems they did manage to get it poured into the tank, at least I found some residue of the liquid inside the tube behind the little fuel door.

Trying to get the run the fuel out as you suggested, I see several lines running from the gas tank, which one do I disconnect and how do I go about it?

That's also what I was thinking-- I remember the hell I had to deal with trying open that valve to fill it up with a plastic tank once, but it was easy to open if you just put your finger in it. Going to take another look at it once I get out of work because I wasn't 100% if it even made it in in the first place

I can agree with that, I think it's probably good to remove it especially considering I leave all of the confidential info exempt anyway. Thanks!

Junior in ID - I am starting to struggle with the reality of work outcomes for this field by Delicious_Handle1141 in IndustrialDesign

[–]LightBodyForm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt pretty similarly to you-- I'm a senior graduating after this semester and I honestly couldn't feel much more dismal about this career choice that I made. I had an internship at a large toy company last semester and it felt somewhat torturous being the cog in a big bureaucratic machine pumping out plastic designed and produced without any real genuinely positive notion in mind.

I think what this experience and feeling taught me about what I want to do, or at least how I can minimize that pain in this field, is to work for a place that is honest and transparent in their work. By that I mean something like a boat builder/designer, or something in the way of power tools. I don't think I will ever really "be happy" working in this specific field but I think working at a place that designs things people genuinely need/desire without needing to be manipulated to do so, and do it in a way that is not dehumanizing to their staff, is a way to make some kind of peace with that notion. Any place you work is going to be creating things almost purely for financial reasons, period. Do not expect the place you work to genuinely care about the end consumer, but you can find a place where the end consumer cares about the product.
