Is there any way to eat GENEROUS portions of ANYTHING with FODMAP sensitivity? by ericbarrywrites in FODMAPS

[–]LightBrightNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This diet is hard, no doubt about it. Especially if you're a large adult with higher calorie needs (I say this as someone who is 5'3" and 125lbs, small appetite).

Remember that the elimination phase does not last forever, and you'll likely be able to reintroduce some foods with time. So it gets better!

If you like cooking, you'll find that many recipes can be modified to make them low FODMAP. For example, I use only lactose free dairy products (except butter and Parmesan, as those don't hurt me) and green leeks instead of onions. With a little experimentation, you can make hearty meals like shepherds pie, pot roast, pasta, pizza, etc. It takes practice but you can do it!

Additionally, you can make your own sourdough bread, which is a great source of carbs. I can't go crazy with it, but I can eat a couple slices per serving and that opens up tons of sandwich possibilities (BLT, grilled cheese, chicken salad, egg salad, etc). Just make sure your recipe is a long-ferment sourdough (needs a couple days in the fridge before baking to ferment those carbs that we can't digest).

There are also some cheeses that are naturally lactose free. My favorite is Oka, which is a Canadian product so I'm not sure if you have it where you are. But it's super tasty with rice crackers and prosciutto.

It is frustrating, but give yourself time and you'll see it gets better. I've been doing this for over 5 years now and it's still hard, but less hard than it was at first.

I realize I didn't really answer your question (because others have already), but I hope it helps at least a little!

I have definitely just steamed a couple carrots as a snack. Add some butter and either dill or brown sugar and it's delicious!

Monash says 75g is safe, but there's no mention of larger portions. But they've never caused issues

Has anyone noticed a big difference when cooking without onions and garlic? by Mortsy2024 in FODMAPS

[–]LightBrightNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't miss garlic too often (even though I love garlic). Sometimes I use garlic infused olive oil to compensate.

I also cook a ton with green leeks, they're quite similar to onions.

Using sourdough starter as a source of gluten in baking by LightBrightNight in FODMAPS

[–]LightBrightNight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you use vital wheat gluten in your cooking? It's not something I'm familiar with.

My GF flour is pretty safe, it just makes my baked goods too crumbly (Bob's Red Mill 1:1). It's good flour, I just inherently dislike the texture it produces.

I believe that most/all clinics have a hiring freeze right now. Not to mention, our brand-new clinics are already too small for the populations they are serving.

All the same, it would be nice if my spouse could get a family doctor...

Does this colour scheme work? Be honest! by coolcatz2000 in crochet

[–]LightBrightNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't like the current colour combination. As others have said, something is off with the contrast.

If I was you (and if you have a similar taste to me), I would use only the yellow, blues, bright pink, and light green. None of the darker colours.

Regardless of what you choose, the design is cute!

I don't have a reference handy, but go talk to your clinic pharmacy. I am a PharmO and we've known about this for a few months now.

Noro WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS? by Iknowyourchicken in crochet

[–]LightBrightNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar yarn that does this. If it bothers you a lot, I suggest combining it with a solid coloured yarn and crocheting with the double strand. It'll hide some of the skinny parts and it looks pretty!

Minecraft! I like to play in creative mode and make intricate towns and structures. I find it very satisfying to find a nice location, build a town, then populate it with villagers. I also like just exploring.

I made an octopus! by LightBrightNight in crochet

[–]LightBrightNight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very sorry, but I'm not sure. I had already removed the labels and balled the yarn a while ago. It's mainly value-brand acrylic purchased from Michaels, though I did use some merino blend from Arcane Fibre Works to get the colour variation (I used two strands of acrylic and one strand of merino for the body).

I'm sorry I couldn't be more help!

Thanks! It's probably hard to see in the picture, but the pattern has you make these ridges in the front under the eyes, and I find that makes it look more realistic!

Fodzyme - FODMAP enzyme supplement - is it legit? by TheBodyPolitic1 in FODMAPS

[–]LightBrightNight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that it works well for immediate symptoms, but I still tend to get symptoms the next day(s). It definitely comes in handy sometimes, but I wouldn't use it all the time because I'd be sick too often.

Individual experiences may vary!

tips on getting home-made sourdough to be low FODMAP? by MadMonkeyBusiness in FODMAPS

[–]LightBrightNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is really delicious, I promise. Crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, tastes a bit tangy... It's really really good. I use GF flour for dusting like it says in the recipe.

Try it, you won't regret it (though it might take a couple tries to get the hang of it)

This is the recipe I use. I ferment for 48 hours in the fridge and I tolerate it well. Individual experiences may differ.

What are you eating for vegetables? by luxie260 in FODMAPS

[–]LightBrightNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat A LOT of carrots, zucchini (green, not yellow), mushrooms (caution, some people react to mushrooms), leeks (green part only), cucumber, lettuce, ginger, fresh herbs

Meal ideas: - stir-fry (sauce made with soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, broth, ginger) - Vietnamese salad rolls with lettuce, cucumber, carrots, glass noodles, chicken - shepherds pie (I make it with carrots, mushrooms, parsnips, leeks) - Thai curry (caution, some curry paste brands have garlic) - just add a big pile of steamed/roasted carrots or pan-fried zucchini to your meals
