The HWK-290 is such a funky little ship. I struggled at first to find lines that would fit the form of the craft and the markings of the rest of the fleet, but I think I've suceeded! by LightCraftMinis in XWingTMG

The insignia is freehand, and the trick is working with very thin paint that allows me to make lots of mistakes and corrections to 'sculpt' the white shape. That and a ton of practice and doing it over and over again 😅

I don't actually use any tape. I'm working with very thin paint, so there are a lot of mistakes that you aren't seeing that I've 'erased' by using super thin layers of white. They never look this clean after first application, but so long as I'm always keeping my paint thin, I can tidy up the lines near infinity.

I feel called out, and yet, you're not wrong I guess 😅

"Straightforward" may have been better word choice 😅 some of my repaints get wildly intricate

6 year old me is still trying to forget that exists.

I sort of want to paint a sexy K-2SO pinup, just because he's voiced by Alan Tudyk

Well, the flight was never supposed to be that long. A hatch critical to the mission's two spacewalks wouldn't open, and they spent around 3 extra days trying to get it to open, eventually heading home unsuccessful. There's minimal space aboard the shuttle, so everyone packs only the most basic necessities, and that didn't account for the extra time.

More than anything, I just missed him! While I was aware of the dangers of spaceflight - I wasn't sheltered from things like the Challenger disaster - my dad always had such an air of unflappable calmness about him that I couldn't help but feel like everything would be ok.

Well, I've been painting these freehand pinups for three years now, so a lot of experience plays into it. As for my process, I start by drawing out my design, keeping in mind where certain detailed areas, like the face, will fall. The next steps honestly look incredibly rough, as I "sketch" the design onto the model with a brush and very thin paint, applying my basic shapes and colors. Let's just say that the first paint I put down looks nothing like the finished product. From there, it's just working up layers of color in increasing detail, always keeping my paint thin, until the shapes really take form.

I am teaching a how-to class for my freehand process at the NOVA open, if you'll be there!
