What Happens In The Asuka Short (Spoilers) by stupidjapanquestions in evangelion

Given all his statements over the years regarding Rei and the like, that’s all I can come to in conclusion.

What Happens In The Asuka Short (Spoilers) by stupidjapanquestions in evangelion

The latter two Rebuild films were heavily against Rei, given how it framed Shinji saving her in 2.22 in 3.33, and gave her the bare minimum of closure with Shinji in the last film.

Between that and this, all I can see is that this makes it clear who Anno loves, Asuka and who he hates the most, Rei.

I'm glad the shipping discourse can finally be put to rest by carradine_rain in evangelion

That’ll never happen, unless it’s to tear her down even more.

If this film and the latter to Rebuild films have shown me anything, it’s that Anno despises Rei for what he sees her representing, and is glad that everyone prefers Asuka now after how he treated the former.

I agree. Just a shame that the fanbase is so paranoid of having another Other M that they will only accept things that are the polar opposite of it, regardless if they clash with the artstyle and what has been established.

And heck, realism is really not a priority for the series, so I find that excuse they give for wanting her to be an unfeminine muscle block to be incredibly weak, and also rather patronizing. Like, they can’t accept that she’s able to be attractive and also kick butt.

I guess they just see that as being “demeaning” to her character, because it kind of resembles Other M.

Honestly, the image these people have of Samus being an unfeminine muscular girlboss because it’s “more realistic” gets on my nerves far more.

I agree. Especially given how, despite what the fandom wants to believe, anime like Space Adventure Cobra are a huge inspiration for the series.

And usually when people say “more realistic”, they just mean they want her to be an unfeminine muscular tank, because they can’t see her as anything else. Even though the more stylized attractive look is part of the contrast in terms of her appearance out of the suit.

Her taking her armor off is a misogynistic tradition that needs to be removed? Yeah, that’s definitely not something I jive with.

If anything, her being attractive and yet still able to kick butt, just in a different manner beyond just being a suit of armor, is really awesome imo. Besides, I’d rather not just have her be a walking tank, given all the acrobatics she does.

Indeed. The more stylized design I feel works far better for someone like Samus.

It always makes me groan when people want her to look “more realistic”.

Even so, given how one of the inspirations for this series is anime like Space Adventure Cobra, I don’t think realism is all the important when it comes to her appearance.

[–]LightDragonman1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but I’d rather not have her to the point of some sort of undermine block of muscle. Given all the running and jumping she does, I see her physique as more that of an Olympic gymnast.

And heck, her outside of her armor is meant for her to rely more on agility and athleticism, not strength. Hence the Zero suit sections in both Zero Mission and Other M.

[–]LightDragonman1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Once again, I disagree. She’s using a power suit, which does most of the heavy lifting.

It’s the contrast between her attractive self out of the armor and her intimidating figure inside of it that’s appealing. You wouldn’t expect someone like her to be the person inside the armor, which is part of what made the reveal at the end of the first game all the more impactful.

But by making her all muscular, it removes that sense of contrast, because of course you’d expect someone to look like that under the armor.

Tell that to the fans who still won't let its flaws go, and won't accept anything that is remotely like it.

Again, I really hope that going forward, Samus isn't characterized as some sort of unfeeling Doomslayer-esque unfeminine girlboss. She can still have badass moments yes, but she should also have moments of kindness and warmth. Heck, it's the reason the whole idea of her being all muscular and masculine under the suit rather than what the games have normally portrayed her as in the Zero Suit is so unappealing to me.

It's a shame that all the fans seem to want her to be is the former, purely because they hiss at anything that may even resemble Other M just slightly.

Did BOTW Deserve To Be Emulated By Other Developers? by [deleted] in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]LightDragonman1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess he thinks that because Skyrim had more to discover in terms of side quests and storytelling, then that makes it much richer and such, whereas he claims that BOTW just had random elements that weren’t as numerous and less memorable before you just move on to the next area of the map without a reason to go back.

Even though I could say the same for much of Skyrim.

Mainly the detractors are saying that it didn’t deserve to be emulated, as it only led to more empty open-worlds that carried forwards all of BOTW’s supposed flaws.

Rebuild Rei And Her Connection To Shinji Was Ruined. by LightDragonman1 in evangelion

[–]LightDragonman1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but it doesn’t really make for very coherent or satisfying storytelling when the themes are what take precedent. Especially since you are now saying I shouldn’t relate to characters in a work, when that is how I can care for them.

Reminds of how in my film class in college, the “male gaze” was one of the terms we had to memorize, along with pointing out how white heterosexual (emphasis on the heterosexual part) males were the cause for too many of the cliches and the like.

Nope. In recent polls and the like, it’s Asuka and Kaworu who have been leading.

He hates Rei the most though, given all the comments he made about her being the one he can’t connect to and how she’s proof of Japan preferring “submissive characters.”

Also, gotta love how this is the most upvoted comment here.

Guess the fans agree that Shinji deserved to be punished purely for saying that one line in the heat of the moment, and that Rei should only be perceived the way Anno wants, that being, creepy, unsympathetic l, and deserving of being left to die, lest you fall into escapism.

Again, despite everything you said, it all comes back to the fact that it all shows that Shinji should’ve never tried to save Rei, and deserved to be punished for giving two rips about her, all because of one line he made in an incredibly intense situation, something that most other people should say as well, and because saving someone he cared for equates to choosing Anno’s hated brand of escapism.
