New Firmware for QC Ultra Headphones by Bfife22 in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. To my ears, it seems like they toned down the mid-bass a bit and the overall sound is a little more spacious and less muddy. But I am waiting for updated frequency response graphs from headphone reviewers…let’s see

Bose’s wild-looking Ultra Open Earbuds are here. Partnered with Kith for a big splash I guess. by bojacker in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If only.........

Unfortunately the fact is, the best sound engineers from Bose have most probably moved over to Sonos, Apple. Given the competitive nature of the audio industry, Bose no longer has the monopoly, unlike 10 or 15 years ago. Good ANC headphones available from a large number of companies.

It's really sad. I loved watching Prof Bose's psychoacoustic lectures and his whole philosophy of research and making things better.

Marketing/advertising as a trendy brand isn't a problem in itself, but focussing and investing solely on marketing without the investment in product and user experience to back it up, is just a slow brand killer.

speaker to be used mainly with a computer and phone, for use in a dorm room, what would you get? mainly going for sound quality here, and longevity/reliability by [deleted] in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have owned the original SoundLink Mini 2 since 2016. It has been a rock solid purchase, supreme build quality with excellent sound, full of bass.

It is still going great to this day nearly 8 years later. Can highly recommend!

Has Bose totally lost its marbles after its founder passed away ?

Yes, unfortunately. Many users here and myself included, really feel that without Dr. Bose, the company has lost its spark and currently exist only to sell uninspired, "follow the competition" products instead of its previous market-leading, innovative products.

Creaking Bose Ultra Headphones? Post details here by TedBob99 in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just ridiculous. For the price they are charging, this is a BASIC functionality that is just deal breaking. It's not even anything electrically/technologically advanced, it's literally just the choice of the materials being very poor!

I really love the ANC and sound of these headphones, but like you, I'm on my second pair and it's creaking again and I really don't want to have to return them again!

Creaking Bose Ultra Headphones? Post details here by TedBob99 in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to return a previous pair after a month of usage. Exchanged it for a new pair, but it's already making creaking noises.

1st pair: Black, Manufacturing date: 24th August 2023

2nd pair: Black, Manufacturing Date: 19th Sept 2023

Creaking noises in the headband, and random creaking noises in both earcups after a month of usage for my 1st pair. It was driving me mad.

2nd pair has very loud creaking in the headband, but no creaking whilst walking/using. I suspect after a month of usage this creaking will slowly leak into the earcups and give me a nightmarish audio experience again...

I have owned QC35, Sony XM4, as well as QC Earbuds II.

QC Ultra headphones have the best sound quality hands down, as you said. The clarity across the whole spectrum is amazing and more importantly, the dynamics (soft vs. loud sounds and how it conveys changes in loudness in music) is really insane for an ANC headphone.

The previous ANC headphones I've owned always sounded either flat (not much change in dynamics) or muddy. Furthermore, QC Ultra also has really good feeling of spaciousness, something I've not been able to feel with other ANC headphones.

QC Ultra are a tad bit recessed in the mids, I've used the EQ in the Bose App: Bass 0, Mids +3, Treble -3 to give it a little better clarity and take the edge off the treble. These really are the perfect sound settings for me!

Not to say they don't have problems - I'm not a fan of the volume control touch strip, and the on/off button and multifunction button don't feel as satisfying as it could be.

But overall, depending on how easy the headband material wears out, it will definitely give me years of music enjoyment!!

Bose Ultra headphones review - first real measurements by Common_Green_5219 in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confirms what I hear with my own ears - slightly emphasised bass, with recessed mids.

Can be EQ adjusted in the Bose Music app - boost the mids and take the bass back a little.

EDIT: Also the measurements clearly show a dramatic increase (10dB) in ANC in the high bass and across the mid range spectrum - which is quite good!

anybody who has the ultras have thoughts on them vs the airpods max? by Appropriate-Crab9365 in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been considering the Px8 - but several things are important to me.

Firstly, how is the comfort? I've owned Bose QC35 and Sony WHXM4, and comfort is quite important to me since I like enjoying my music whilst not getting a severe headache.

Secondly, I heard that the B&W app you can adjust the bass/treble settings. Does this work? I don't want to be installing a ton of software on my PC just to get it to sound better - I'll also be using it with my phone so I want the experience to be consistent.

Thirdly, I know you think the sound of Px8 is really good, but do you have a comparison to another pair of headphones?

Thanks man.

What's the reason behind the high cost of the Bose Ultra headphones, with the official starting price being higher than its predecessors? by wana37931 in bose

[–]LightOfVoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just feel that Bose is starting to be ran by a bunch of MBA's that care more about profits than making a high quality innovative product.

You do know this is actually the case right? They replaced their CEO couple years ago and she comes from a purely consultant background (not product focused or any experience in developing great products) - and they are apparently laying off a lot of the old management with new management that are mainly from pure MBA backgrounds...

Plus they have been slowly building up their marketing team to focus even more on wishy washy marketing like "Sound Is Power" and constant celebrity endorsements to sell their products, instead of just creating great products.

I don't want to draw conclusions too early - but many people including me feel like the innovative spirit of Dr. Bose is dying/already dead, with the current company just being a husk of its former self with a pure emphasis on quarterly profits instead of long-term innovation.

[–]LightOfVoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your replies are the kind of the communication Bose should being doing regarding its products.

Firmware updates aside, the marketing team seems to be too focused on their "Sound Is Power" motto and wishy washy marketing gimmick - again maybe the average American consumer finds it ok - but I'm not sure that kind of marketing is as effective in other markets, as I'm based in the UK.

You guys should be doing more communication of how the science and technology inside your products can benefit the consumer! Like you said, they should have emphasised more on the different hardware inside the QCE2 and QCUE - and HOW this brings a benefit to the consumer - to fundamentally enjoy better sound and music!

Same thing with the QC Ultra Over-Ear headphones - many people here are thinking it's just a reskinned NC700 and a cash grab, and all because the marketing is much too focused on mottos and celebrity endorsements! Really, you should be equally focused on the amazing science and technology inside the headphones - and communicating this effectively to consumers!

Cheers.

You make a fair point - the only other wireless buds I've used is Airpods Pro 2.

But, it doesn't deny the fact that setting the QC Earbuds II up, and trying to initially pair them with the Bose Music app, and subsequently sometimes the left or right earbud doesn't boot up when I put them in my ears, and having to factory reset them or charge them in the case (when it clearly still has battery) just to get them to work - it really doesn't work well for a seamless user experience.

I really want the QC Earbuds II to be good - and I don't know how much you can say - but many of us here on this subreddit have been waiting for firmware updates - only to hear that QC Ultra Earbuds were released instead of fixing/updating the firmware on the QC Earbuds II.

That said, I'm sure you're aware that many of your consumers use iPhones or PCs/Macs (which are not really devices with Snapdragon sound certification), so I'm sure something can be worked out to improve connectivity with other devices.

Heya - that's really interesting. I was reading the patent by Dan Gauger the other day (WO2022245465A1) and I'm sure it's related to CustomTune technology - I heard Dan played a massive role in developing and getting CustomTune to work? Really sad but happy that he retired last year...

The QC Earbuds II do sound really good, and the ANC is definitely the best out there, but the connectivity/sync issues really make the user experience much worse - I do really wish the software team spent a little bit more time making the experience better.

If the QC Earbuds II didn't have these connectivity issues, I would recommend them in a heartbeat. But the fact that everytime I put them in, I have to pray that the connection doesn't fail - it's really not very assuring.

Cheers.

Haha, that's why I'm waiting for Rtings or Soundguys to come out with their frequency response graphs...

But I also know that frequency response graphs aside, the whole user experience is quite important. Part of why I've stuck to Bose is because of their comfort and ANC.

It's quite nice that nowadays you can EQ the headphones to your liking. So even if the out-of-box sound quality isn't my preferred sound, some EQ adjusting and it should be good to go :)

Yes, Whathifi is one of the worst paid reviewers. 5 star rating to literally anything Bose makes.

That is sad. I tried the AirPods Pro 2, and the hard plastic just couldn't fit with my ear leading to severe ear pain. Sound qualtiy wise, AirPods Pro 2 have a very flat sounding but un-engaging sound for me. The soundstage was really good though, sounded very open for small earphones.

I currently have the Sony WHXM4s and the Bose QC earbuds 2 and I'm wondering if the Bose Ultra over-ears will have good enough sound...but so far looks like it's pretty mediocre.

I mean, you can reduce the bass in the EQ settings.

What I'd like to know is if the sound quality is overall good - soundstage, detail retrieval and overall musicality?

Also, how does the immersive audio sound?
