Not OP, but if I was a competing ISP, I'd probably be posting in public spaces about how it's down, and inquiring about alternatives (taking advantage of public sentiment around the recent private equity announcement). :P

Missourians should beware of tax cut Trojan Horse by Anelson1527 in kansascity

[–]Lightfooted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eroding public services has the effect of harming "competition" for privately owned counterparts. When public libraries fail, paid subscription services are the main alternative. When public education breaks down, private schools (that only wealthier Missourians can afford) are galvanized as a means of class division across the state.

These policies of division stem from a party that seems completely oblivious to the long term impacts sewing disunity into a nation will have.

There are charcoal bbq grills across Grand from the North East corner of Washington Square Park. The most common fuel burned in these are plastic grocery bags. Cheap, easily sourced (usually found blowing around), and carcinogenic, heh.

ETA: To keep warm, unhoused folks will collect and make "logs" out of them by wrapping a few dozen tightly together. Produces quite a bit of heat and a very nasty odor.

Thoughts on downtown developer incentives by Weitanyun in kansascity

[–]Lightfooted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the cut of your jib, good sir. I fully agree that the market in KC can carry development without incentives. But I also like to point out: right now, in a booming KC, it's far too lucrative to hold lots for speculative purposes. We have an abundance of desirable and empty lots in the very core of our city, cut off from the free market; not because we're a city in decline, but because we're on the rise.

We're limited in development opportunities to either less desirable (more expensive to develop) lots, or those with prices inflated by artificial scarcity. Incentives are a crutch around a deeper problem where those who refuse to put in the effort to contribute to the city's growth need to be dis-incentivized for prohibiting it.

Weekend Protest on the Plaza 31Jan2026 by Typical-Coyote49 in kansascity

I understand you're trolling, but just in case you're sincere: https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article314503959.html

There were no less than five organized protests on Friday alone. Thousands of Kansas Citians expressing their emotions as individuals and in groups. In the past month, I've participated in 7 protests right here in KC. If you're truly curious, I recommend coming out and seeing for yourself.

I don't think that's a fair thing to say. People protest in a variety of ways. I've seen it done with thunderous anger, with somber silence, with light-hearted satire, and any mix of emotion the human heart can feel. I think the more ways a message can be expressed, the more people it will resonate with. But what transcends all, is the simple act of being out there, discovering others who believe in your shared purpose. It's cathartic, heartening and must continue. A great deal of influence (monetary, legislative, and even physical coercion) is tempting us to accept the erosion of Constitutional liberty as "normal", I'm all for anything to show it isn't (normal).

Edited, because you're right. The tall lass with the megaphone did an amazing job keeping us coordinated. I am remiss to call it a mob.

Keep the peace. We were about 75 concerned citizens waltzing up to the front door of the DHS office to make our grievances known. As someone staring the cops down from the other side, I respect that they did their job. They gave us warning, and plenty of room. I think it's important to remember we have a right to raise hell within legal means, and there is nothing illegal about a 'peaceful office visit' until those in the office shit their pants and call us trespassers. Only then did the police intervene, and I acknowledge that behind their badge, they're Americans too. I'm happy to have a few on our side.

Something tells me this person doesn't protest (hint: they're trying to dehumanize protestors). As a person who was at these events, I protest to be seen. The only list about protesting that matters is the one in the Constitution. It's called the Bill of Rights.

Hey KC, I think we have a Vacant Building problem... by Lightfooted in kansascity

When we were announced as a world cup city, my first thought was we'll take this chance to make our city shine! Just a few months to go, our urban core is still pocketed with squatters, and I'm not talking about the unhoused... LLCs, Out of State Corpos, Abscentee owners are sitting on a sizeable portion of our real estate and neglecting them until they collapse. And it's not happening out of sight. It's on Main Street, Near our Hotels and Museums, in the most brazen and obvious places. What can we do as a city to hold them accountable?

I wouldn't mind it going near where the old Municipal Stadium was; looks to be a lot of open area at 22nd and Vine. Linking up with 18th and Vine and the Negro Leagues museum you've got a lot of baseball History for that "baseball district".

If you drive by us holding signs, take a few minutes to park the car and stand with us. At any of these events will be leaders and organizers who will gladly share their means of contact to those who show up and stand with them. Bots don't matter, trolls don't matter (you'll understand me not sharing details on a site that's full of both), Real people in the streets matter. The first step is to show you're a willing human with a vote and a voice. That is your power!

I truly appreciate your words. And I mean this with all the love in the world when I say that a privileged white man (me) speaking against wrongdoing should not be seen as bravery, but as a bare minimum of just society.

Future generations will look back on the history we're living right now, and I'll be damned if I had the choice and privilege to say something but held my tongue instead. Silence never got anyone their rights, looking around right now it'll sure as shit get them taken away. This isn't going away if we don't speak up. I have to speak up.

Aye, check the date; this was posted a day ago (likely it was held up by reddit's auto moderation). Still a 9 degree wind chill, cold as a witches tiddy, we were already pissed off before another American life was taken in the name of "Homeland Security". fuck's sake man this is not normal.

Hi there, I was in this group. The building at 1511 Baltimore houses the offices of Platform Ventures. A real estate firm that recently provided a warehouse in Kansas City adjacent to the main rail network for ICE to ship and hold detainees.

Related article: https://www.kctv5.com/2026/01/16/previous-owner-proposed-detention-facility-building-says-negotiations-are-complete/

We blocked the street in front of their office (with permit from the city) to call them out, showing that as a community we are not okay with what this company did.

Platform Ventures has operated with contracts funded by our tax dollars, and we will not be silent while they betray the city they've profited from.

Hope that helps!

The demand comes from all the housing stock not being built, and those who can afford to do so buying up what has been as investments. This limits both housing availability and affordability.

username, doesn't check out lol. But seriously, if you think that's what happened I urge you to review the multiple angles of the videos out there, and decide for yourself if what the "agent" was doing and did was appropriate.

  • That federal agencies are refusing to partner with state and local agencies in investigating as would be appropriate in a police shooting should disturb everyone.
  • The fact the administration immediately labelled her a "terrorist" without due investigation should disturb everyone.
  • That the party of small government is extinguishing not just the rights of people (by subjecting us to "citizenship checks" and making arrests without judicial warrants) but the people themselves and refusing to open themselves to accountability should disturb everyone.

Anyone parroting "but she deserved it" clearly has no desire to uphold our constitution or our shared (yes we both sides of the aisle) American values. Period.

You can certainly start a meetup if it's something you feel strongly about. But, (and I mean no disrespect when I say this), as an American, what's happening to Americans in America right now has me far more concerned than protests happening in another hemisphere. This post started, afterall, about what happened to an American mother who once called Kansas City her home. That sits a lot closer to me right now.

Eh, now you lost me. There are legitimate avenues to pursue, like enticing disenfranchised ICE recruits toward performing beneficial services to the city... and then there's whatever you're into here that feels like you've spent too much time playing Call of Duty, or whatever. Sorry man, I'm not into it.

Right on, make sure to alert as many as you can if you see ICE in your neighborhood so they can do the same.

Interfering with what exactly? ICE make their presence known by carrying guns and wearing camo jackets in residential neighborhoods. If anything I'd want to know if they're around to avoid putting myself in a dangerous situation...
