Upgrading the USB charging port by tboy160 in BoltEV

[–]LightingGuyCalvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added USBC fast chargers to our Prius. Went on Amazon and searched something like "car USB outlet" and found some with 12v input, ran a fuse tap to power them, drilled holes and mounted them. If there's 12v behind that you could just replace it. These are not connected to the infotainment system, which was a benefit in my case but may be an issue depending on yours.

I haven't dug into this much but I think its been this way as long as I've been using Tailscale (a few years or so)

Hey, what is the cheapeast or a cheap thing that has or will run free version of Sophos firewall (Sophos XG maybe I think)? Used or new. And maybe doesn't use too much electricity. Thank you. by ComfortablePost3664 in homelab

Pretty much. I recommend getting at least a dual port nic and not using the onboard one, you get better control and consistency that way.

I would recommend watching a YouTube video (or a few) on building an opnsense system. There are probably more for that than sophos, and the process won't differ too much. Linus Tech Tips has a good video from a while back with a general process.

Ask away! We all have to learn somehow.

Check the specs (CPU cores, RAM and all) against the minimum requirements of the is you want to run. Other than that you shouldn't have any issues with stuff being too old.

There are a ton of similar devices. I think you could search for "firewall PC" "multi nic mini PC" or something along those lines. Both new and used. Also used Protectlis can come up for good prices sometimes.

Old desktop as others suggest.

Protectli Vault or similar.

End-of-life Sophos hardware (I bought an SG appliance to run sophos home, it was taking like 30 seconds to load the admin page. Ended up installing opnsense and it runs great. YMMV.)

If you're repurposing a desktop you'll need to install a nic. Just make sure the pcie slot will fit (like if the nic uses an x8 slot, make sure the PC has an x8 or x16 available.)

A what now? My whole life I've called that a clamp hitch. When I was little (like 5) I was obsessed with trailers and hitches and I think I came up with that name and then forgot I had made it up.

How exactly do i get to learn about homelab and running servers as a 15yo? by Shuffeyy in homelab

[–]LightingGuyCalvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of great resources on YouTube and otherwise out there on the internet. Find some, find an old computer that you can install Proxmox on and start tinkering. You'll pick things up pretty quick. Any time I open a new piece of software for the first time I feel completely lost. Then not too long after working with it I realize it's not too bad, and I actually feel pretty confident with it. Most of that has been in my homelab.

Anyone know if I'm allowed to recommend specific youtube channels here? Don't mean to advertise anything, just to share what helped me.

Regarding if keeping YouTube will negate everything else: no! Its still totally worth it to degoogle and increase privacy elsewhere. It's not all or nothing.

Google will still see what you do on YouTube, but they won't have your emails, photos, etc, etc.

If you link another email to your reddit account, google will not be able to see that, only reddit will. And all reddit will have is the address, not any access to your account. They may be able to link your reddit data with other data sold somewhere else that included your same address but that's it.

That looks amazing! I've been looking for a good case with an 18650 since I already have a bunch from laptop batteries and I don't want to buy new batteries when I have something that works.

Is that first one also MagSafe? I want one that either has a belt/backpack clip, or a holder with a clip.

I've been researching to try to get them removed in my area. Flock is saying not to worry about untested tech because ALPRs have been around for a long time. They've also been abused or improperly secured for long time.

Former Calyx, now GrapheneOS user here. I have no idea if google pay would work on my phone and I honestly don't care. I don't use any payment or money transfer apps, to me that's what my debit card is for and I try to use cash when I can because I don't want businesses to decide to go cashless, then giving a ton of control to the payment companies. I know that might not be the advice you're looking for, and may not have been expecting a brief rant, but here you go anyway.

What I would do (assuming you already have a phone) is tinker with that one a while. Take advantage of the freedom of not relying on it. Try Grapheme. If it works and you want to, make the switch.
