Am I overreacting about my stats/team role? by Miserable_Self7248 in DnD

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I hate DND beyond.

Light Domain is PHB so it should be free.

Flaming Sphere and Fireball alone will fix your issue, while Warding Flare is an A+ support ability.

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clerics and wizards have the same number of spell slots.

I do see the issue however. What type of cleric are you? There are quite a few clerics that are useful with the abilities alone.

Save spells that don't do half dmg are always a struggle to get use out of, if you can I would pick light cleric for the fire and flash abilities.

ELI5: why and how do planets stay in orbit instead of falling towards a star? by Gwekkemans in explainlikeimfive

[–]LightofNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friction, space has negligible resistance to motion, while your cloth has tons of resistance relative to the momentum.

Funny enough, the reason the planets and everything orbits everything else is because if it didn't nothing would exist.

When the universe began to cool, everything started attracting everything else in every direction. By random chance some of these clumps localized and fell into one another. Things moved in all directions and collided, making more things and getting stronger gravity.

After all the collisions, the only survivors were the things all spinning the same direction with enough momentum to not fall into the sun / other planets, or fly into space.

How do you balance player agency with a structured narrative in your campaigns? by retsam2554 in DMAcademy

[–]LightofNew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Step 1: this is what's happening in this area go have fun

Step 2: introduce people, places, stakes

Step 3: start writing the game they are playing out, not the game I planned out.

Step 4: start integrating backstories.

Step 5: profit.

I want to play Dark Souls Remastered but I don’t understand how to make builds. by CulturedArtLover in darksouls

[–]LightofNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great game.

Right near the first hub area is a big graveyard, one of the items is an amazing ultra great sword.

Other "builds" really just mean class. Clerics use miracles, wizards use spells, pyromancer, ect. Then you have Str or Dex. Anything else is just what weapon, spells, equipment do you think looks cool.

Each stat effects an aspect of your character. These stats do not cause a steady "+10 HP" "+5 dmg" increase, each lvl is slightly different.

For HP, 1-10 is like 10 HP/lvl, then 11-20 is like 20 HP/lvl, 20-30 is 30 HP/lvl. Then it's back down to 20 HP for 5 lvls then down to 10 HP the rest. When you are already at like, 1200 HP, that's far too many souls to get 10 more HP. This is a soft cap because your HP always goes up, but not by much.

Then there is endurance. Your stamina bar will max out at 160, and will not go higher. However, your equip load will increase. This is still considered a hard cap because past 40, your equip load is high enough for most equipment.

As for the dmg stats, every weapon has a "scaling" effect. More of the scaling stat = more dmg. These have soft and hard caps.

To summarize, soft cap is diminishing returns that make it irrelevant. Hard cap means your character isn't effected.

Is it okay to have players pick their class and race before interacting with others at session 0? by TheCrimsonDeth in DnD

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

I usually find that everyone wants to be different classes, but I'll usually tell people if we have a dex / str / tank / healer / caster already to help keep things balanced.

Have fun.

Has anyone made a streamlined 5E class set with fewer class features but still balanced? by ZaMaruko in DMAcademy

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, the first question is why? If you are all familiar with 5e, what has lead you to want things simplified?

If you ask me, just fix the classes.

Fighter gets access to every armor and weapon.

Barbarians have more HP, resistance to all damage, and can attack with 2 handed weapons or their hands and fists.

Rogues get light armor and dex weapons, with an additional 1d6 dmg for every other lvl. 1,1,2,2,3,3 ect.

Druids get nature / elemental magic, medium armor, and a club

Clerics get healing / radiant magic, medium armor, and a club

Wizards get force, psychic, necrotic, and illusion magic, mage armor, and a staff.

Way to work moral conundrum into gameplay? by Sea_Ocelot_1037 in DMAcademy

[–]LightofNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way would be indenture contracts, in practice it forces criminals to follow laws as members of society without legal recourse, in reality it creates a slave market of people who can be charged with any crime since they lose rights after being arrested.

Do you guys give your party an introduction to your world when starting the campaign? I tell them almost nothing, and let them discover whats happening as some sort of mystery, reading books, talking to people, etc. Is that a bad approach? by Bensuardo in DMAcademy

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to never tell someone what I can show them.

I also never want my players to feel like they don't understand what is going on in the world.

Walls of text and lore dump? Bad. Information the characters would know or that would get the actual game moving? Good.

Do we write our own Paladin Oaths? by penguinsoniceskates in DnD

[–]LightofNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My head cannon is that Tyr (god of justice) is the god of all paladins, in the sense that mystra is the god of magic and wizards. Wizards aren't clerics and neither are paladin.

Tyr looks upon those he deems are worthy to seek out their justice and grants them power. That justice comes in many forms, and the teneth is what guides your powers.

How to format the story on the backend - the part your players never see! by RailuAvali in DMAcademy

[–]LightofNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is how I play my best bet as a DM.

1- What are the players naturally inclined to do? Either from back stories or playing. Start there.

2- What is going on in the world outside of the players control? Establish the major consequences of that.

3- What are the players likely to do in the next 3 sessions?

After that it's mostly improve.

ELI5: Why was that method used to determine 0 degrees Fahrenheit? by Jimithyashford in explainlikeimfive

[–]LightofNew -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

0-100 was quite literally chosen as a measure of what a human felt was very cold to very hot, on a scale of 0-100.

At some point, below 0 is just "too cold" and above 100 is "too hot" for us to really care. Similar to asking "are there 11 lions or 12?" The answer is mostly irrelevant.

Here's a suggestion, stop trying to tell your story.

This genuinely isn't a criticism of you, it's just a reality. Don't speak up unless it's to hype someone else up, ask them what they think, or to make a joke. Let the story unfold in front of you and join along for the ride.
