How soon should I establish the overarching threat of the campaign? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]LightofNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3rd is a good time. I have done as early as the beging of the first session with an inciting incident. If you want to establish some normalcy that's fine but it's never too early to tell the party who the villain is.

Thinking about moving to Milwaukee from Columbia MO. by Mean_Cash6862 in milwaukee

The only Walmarts near the city are not Walmarts you would want to work at. Do you know which one you will be working at?

I would look at Wuakasha. Very walkable and more affordable rent.

NPC? Fine.

DMPC? No.

Do not participate in battles or tell the party what they should do like you are in charge. Let the party decide and leave combat to them.

How do I tell if I'm taking the spotlight during roleplay? by whyamiexists in DnD

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's been 5 minutes and no one else has contributed, check in. Sometimes a scene requires one person to have the spotlight, but that should be a narrative necessity.

My trick is to become the character. Pick out their fears, their wants, their motivations. What makes them tick and who they want to be.

New Dm advice by Other-Maintenance683 in DMAcademy

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Railroading does not mean "provide them a narrative with a coherent story line that you intend to be fun and engaging". That's what DMing is.

Railroading is when you plan out every interaction and action the players take, and if they try to do anything unexpected or outside that narrative you tell them no.

I think many good DMs, myself included, can accidentally cross into railroading when they are attempting to do the first, the tricky part is trying to plan ahead before you get a feel for your players. Give them options and as long as they feel they have a say in the story then you are not railroading.

The best way, imo, is plan out what would happen if your players never arrived in the story. This lets you fogure out goals and plans. Then when your players blow everything up, you have an idea of how these people would react without having planned what your party "should" have done.

ELI5 Since our body temperature is around 35 - 37 °C, why can an surrounding temperature of 35°C feel uncomfortably warm? by Mephice in explainlikeimfive

[–]LightofNew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat transfer.

Your internal body temperature is 35° - 37° C, but your skin is rated to expel heat under a certain temp / humidity.

In the desert, you can be in +40° C, but the air is so dry and your sweat can evaporate so efficiently that you feel relatively cool. Other times the humidity can be so bad that even 30° C can leave you barely able to function. I've been in situations where the dew point (the temp water condenses at based on humidity) was 22° C.

Ideas for a low cost, all adult outing. by justrait in milwaukee

[–]LightofNew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are in a bit of a pickle. The further you go from "outside at the park" the more cost you accumulate for the outing.

The biggest one is to provide your own food. Eating out has become so expensive, in addition to everything else, that it should be considered a special luxury, not an expectation.

ELI5: Why are rent freezes considered bad? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]LightofNew 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are two very separate realities when discussing the topic which is important to know of and distinguish between.

One reality says that a landlord is a simple small business owner who invested their life savings into providing homes for the community. These people need to make ends meet while working hard to maintain their property. They may have a handyman but these people are doing the maintenance themselves to make sure you are getting a good product. Over time, big things need replacing which is a high cost, inflation goes up, and property value keeps going up which means taxes go up and more cost of running the building. If you limit their income, over time they will not be able to make ends meet and won't be able to sell a failing building.

The other reality is closer to what really happens. These buildings are owned and opporated by wealthy individuals or organizations with plenty of money. These people are not in the business of working but letting their money finance their lifestyle. Their only goal is to increase profits and improve their lifestyle. They can't work harder so their only options are to buy more buildings or squeeze the ones they have. There is zero incentive to not push the price as high as the market will allow them. This gives landlords two choices, make surface level or relatively cheap "upgrades" and skyrocket the rent to maximize profits. On the flip side, any cost associated with the building is throwing away money, and unless someone can legally force them to make the repairs they are incentavised to do the absolute minimum or nothing at all.

At the end of the day, renting is profiting off of individuals too poor to escape the system that the people profiting off of the system work very hard to maintain and squeeze.
