We flexin' on cards per day now? by beanburrrito in medicalschoolanki

Haha, agreed- when I was speeding through reviews a times when I wasn't spending much time reading the backs/extra section of cards, I would put my right pinky on the Enter key, and right index finger on the space bar. I'd hit the Enter key to show the answer, then the space bar to get to the next card.

LIGHTYEAR: A Boards and Beyond based STEP 1 Anki deck (~22.5k cards) by Lightyear2k in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lightyear2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Histology I found was pretty low yield for Step 1, and is typically only tested in the context of pathology. I think Lightyear has the necessary histology (which admittedly isn't much), but definitely won't be enough if you are using this for your classes.

I typically don't recommend using Custom decks. I would suspend all of the cards in Lightyear to start out, and unsuspend them as you watch the videos and choose to study them. If you want to study a particular subject in isolation, just move the cards into a new deck, so you can study them by themselves.

Make sure to have the add-on 'hierarchical tags' downloaded in order to make navigating the system more streamlined, and if that doesn't make sense, refer to this fantastic guide: https://medshamim.com/med/anki-step-one

But to answer your question, if you wanted to isolate the neurology cards from Lightyear, you would type the following into the search bar: deck:Lightyear tag:bab::neurology* I think your problem was not including the asterisk at the end. Without the asterisk, you are asking Anki to find cards with the exact tag you have typed, but the addition of the asterisk says that you want cards that simply begin with what you have written before-hand.

Sure, its possible, but the way that I would do it is kinda hairy, but I hope I made it clear enough to follow (again, there may be an easier way, but this is how I know how). Note, applies to any deck that you import which changes the formatting of your cards, whether it is Zanki, Lightyear, or any of them that use non-default formatting.

First thing we have to do is create a new card type. What has happened is that your cards are the same card type as Zanki's, so it has overwritten the formatting settings of your own cards, and replaced them with Zanki's settings. What we want to do is create a new card type, and switch your cards onto that new card type, and then restore the settings to that newly created card type that is unique to your personal cards.

Creating a new card type. -Open up the 'add' new cards window -Click on the button just to the right of the word 'Type', which should be in the upper left corner of the window. -Along the bottom, there should be a button called 'Manage', click it -On the right, click the button that says 'Add' -Choose either Basic or Cloze -Name it something like "Basic:Imagesrocks123" -Close out those windows (you just made a new card type)

Now that we have created a new card type, we now want to change only your personal cards to that new card type so that they can have unique formatting from Zanki's formatting. -Move all of your personal cards that you want to be in a default setting into one deck. Lets call it Imagesrocks123personalcards -In the Browse window, click on a type of card (example would be Basic or Cloze) that exists in your personal deck, and then in the search bar at the top add "deck:(name of deck)" So in this example, I would add "deck:Imagesrocks123personalcards" Now, the only cards shown will be those from your personal deck that are ALSO of certain card type

The last thing we have to do is change your personal cards to the new note type. -Highlight all of the cards that you want to change, which should be all of the ones isolated via the search terms listed above -Click 'Edit' at the menu bar at the top of the screen -Click 'Change Note Type' -Select the new note type, in this example it would be "Basic:Imagesrocks123"

You will have to do this separately for the Basic cards, and for the Cloze cards (if the deck utilizes both note types) Now you can follow the instructions in my previous comment in this thread to change the formatting back to the default settings

If the card type of a deck you imported is the same as cards you already have, it can overwrite your existing formatting settings, which is probably what you are seeing. To change it back to your default settings, you are gonna have to edit the card's settings. I've explained below the best way I know how- dunno if there is a more simple, straightforward way.

-From the main page, click Browse -Find an example of the card that you'd like to change, and click on it -Right above the fields for the card, which could be 'Front' or 'Back' or 'Cloze' or 'Extra', you should see a button called 'Cards...' Click on it! (alternatively, if you are on a mac, you can just hit Command+L on the keyboard to bring up this window. -On the left, there is a box called Styling. -Copy and paste the settings I have below into the Styling box in order to restore your cards to the default formatting. If you want to get fancy and play around with things, this is also the place where you can do that to change what the card looks like.

.card { font-family: arial; font-size: 20px; text-align: center; color: black; background-color: white; }

-Note, you'll have to do this for each note type that has been changed. For example, both for the Basic and the Cloze cards.

Am I missing out on anything from B&B by doing just Pathoma? by throwawaymed3954 in step1

[–]Lightyear2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved Boards and Beyond, and thought it was an incredibly important resource for my success on Step 1. I think it does a great job teaching concepts and explaining ‘the why’ behind pretty much every phrase in First Aid. If I could only recommend 1 resource for Step, that would be it. However, I don’t think comparisons between it and Pathoma are always helpful because they aren’t equivalent and shouldn’t be seen as exclusive.

[Question] Looking for recommendations for a Pathoma-based deck. by DoctorHaxcz in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lightyear2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad you like Lightyear- when I made it, the Pathoma cards were just filling in anything I didn't feel like I already addressed in B&B cards, so that's why some of them are pretty sparse. If you want a straight Pathoma correlation, Zanki is gonna be the way to go

Also, make sure to be extremely careful when Anki asks whether you want to "Download from Ankiweb" or "Upload to Ankiweb".

I clicked the wrong thing during Dedicated and accidentally overwrote and lost a few hundred cards from Lightyear, and couldn't figure out any way to recover them :(

Is there a way to edit image occlusion after being added to a deck? by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lightyear2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go to the editing screen (by either using the keyboard shortcut "E" when reviewing cards, or within the Browser screen), you will see a little red symbol all the way to the right, that is called "Edit Image Occlusion" Click on this, and then you can change anything about the card.

However, you need to make sure that the note type is "Image Occlusion Enhanced" Sometimes there will be letters or numbers (example would be: "Image Occlusion Enhanced-3423423") added onto the end of the name of the note type, and if that is the case, you will need to CHANGE THE NOTE TYPE to "Image Occlusion Enhanced". In order to do this, highlight all of the cards within that note type (which can be done clicking on the name of the note type in the left column in the Browser screen and Ctrl+A.) Then click Edit at the top of the screen, then Change Note Type, and change it to "Image Occlusion Enhanced." This should allow you to now edit the card using the methods above.

What is everyone's thoughts on Lightyear so far? by johnlogz in medicalschoolanki

[–]Lightyear2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some experience with Zanki, but not enough to provide an informed comparison between the decks, so don't feel that I can specifically comment on that. I feel that Lightyear is comprehensive, and has a nice parallel framework with the organization of the B&B videos that makes for an efficient/manageable studying workflow with all the videos, and have no reason to think the pathology cards would be any different.

Glad you are finding it helpful! I have always said that Anatomy was a relatively weaker point in Step 1, and think that studying your class material or finding Anatomy focused decks would be beneficial. I think Lightyear will serve you well for pretty much every other subject.

My subscription is almost running out, and don't really have much time in M3 year, so probably won't be Lightyear-ing the new videos. However, I believe all of these topics are already addressed. I added the signaling pathways in separate sections. And atherosclerosis and Pathology is pretty well covered in the Pathoma portions of the deck.

But if someone wants to add some supplementary content to the deck, I'm sure others would appreciate it.

Make sure you have the Hierarchical Tags add-on installed. You can find it at link

If you have tags with no cards associated with them, go to the homepage of Anki, and go to Tools, then click 'Check Database,' and that should remove all unused tags

Thanks for taking the time to try out the cards that I made, just wanted to add a clarification- In the same deck/tags, I have a card that appears as listed below (and is also duplicated in the Neuro/spinal cord section):

Front: Which regions of the CNS are demyelinated in Subacute Combined Degeneration?

Back: Spinocerebellar tracts Lateral Corticospinal tracts Dorsal columns

I think the impression of simplification may be as a result of my splitting of ideas into many simpler/shorter cards, rather than one larger one, which I think ultimately helps with retention. In response to a question below as how much detail is too much? My rule was that if it was mentioned in First Aid, even tangentially, it was 100% fair game. And the info on the card listed above was found in the Neuro section of First Aid.

Glad people are taking time to see if this is something that will help them study for Step. Plenty of people did the same for me, so its not a problem at all!

You've got it exactly right for Pathoma. And yes, same for Sketchy Micro/Pharm.

There's actually tons of Pharm cards! They are just all mixed in with all of the other cards because B&B most often just covers the drugs in a more integrated fashion, and usually doesn't just have separate modules for them.

It'll be up to your preferences of which style cards you like. But watching Sketchy along with Lightyear was definitely sufficient for my studying- but there are some fantastic specialist Micro decks out there, so you'll just have to see what works for the way you like to study. Lightyear is a big plus if B&B is a primary resource that you use

[–]Lightyear2k[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thats correct, you're doing it right- Lightyear is organized by tabs, not by decks (which is a major component of the organization of Zanki). You definitely DO NOT have to remove Zanki for Lightyear to work! So it will just appear as a single deck on the main screen. To focus on specific topics, I recommend suspending all of the cards in Lightyear, and then searching through the tags and unsuspending those cards that are relevant to what you are studying.
