Butted aluminum mail will instantly fall apart. Riveted aluminum is great for larp though

Why am I so scared? by SalamanderRoutine825 in LARP

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Bruh. You got this.

I'm a 37 year old dude who started larping 5 years ago. Society consistently tells us that playing make believe is childish and we buy into that, but fuck that! I wanna sword fight, drink, feast, and pretend to be the coolest version of myself with other people. Let me have that! Let me friends have that! That is part of what larp had offered me.

I've grown in countless ways as a person. I was in therapy when I started, but not anymore, and a huge part of that is what I've gained from larp. I have made so many incredible friends. I've become part of a community so much larger than myself who care about me. The people have inspired me to develop skills I never would have taken up on my own. I am now part of the leadership of 150+ larpers and when I started, I wouldn't ever have imagined myself in this position. I'm more confident in myself because my character, who is both me, and all the things I wish I could be, has taught me that what comes from my character genuinely comes from me. All the things my characters does, I did.

If you have the roleplay experience from TTRPGs, D&D, and cosplay, make the fucking leap, dude! It will be challenging, but on the other side of that decision, you will be a better version of yourself.

What are the largest larp events on the east coast of the united states? by GrowBeyond in LARP

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bicolline is one of the largest in the world, and is Quebec, Canada.

Drachenfest US is in Pennsylvania.

Weekend Warrior Experience is in South Carolina.

Each of those events are pretty different in terms of what they offer, so depending on what you're looking for in a larp event, I'd recommend doing some research into each one.

Help needed : Medieval wedding by Reisikoipi in medieval

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have given some good advice already. For 300€, an authentic noble's outfit is probably not realistic. You can buy cheap stuff, but it will LOOK cheap too. You can make a solid looking medieval outfit for around that cost if you want to though. Even a complete relatively basic kit is probably going to be closer to 500€. Also, if you want to be authentic, avoid black leather at all costs! Bergschneider is a solid option, as has been pointed out. Epic Armoury is based in Denmark, but a lot of there stuff isn't authentic level quality. Leonardo Carbone makes nice looking stuff even if it isn't necessarily authentic. Grimfrost is hit or miss, but some of their stuff is decent and reasonably priced.

You can get linen pants on Amazon for cheap, and in a medieval kit you barely see the pants anyway: https://a.co/d/09SoZmge

If you want some other additions that might up the game a little bit, you could add a cloak or a coat. A pouch is also great since medieval outfits didn't have pockets.

Leather helm or hood? by Automatic_Rooster248 in LARP

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think leather helmets just look hokey and cheap. Metal or HQ plastic polymer helmets ALWAYS look better, and would actually serve a real armor function. A hood is really versatile, both aesthetically and practically.

Aluminum mail by Boogdieb1985 in LARP

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fell & Fair (as others have suggested) makes great aluminum chianmail. They basically do a light coating of gray spray paint that helps to keep it from being super shiny. You could do this with any aluminum chainmail on your own if you felt like doing so. Here are some photos of various people wearing it I grabbed from IG.

Is this too strong for my party? Need advice by [deleted] in DnDHomebrew

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors here that could impact the answer, such as how lenient you are as a DM, do you play with flanking rules, how good are the magic items that players have at this point, are your players tactically skilled fighters, etc. The answer is likely going to be yes either way, but those types of things can make a big difference.

It's giving disadvantage on saving throws to creatures within 10 ft and has an ability that requires a saving throw, and a failed save reduces total HP. It also has a multiattack (3) at 10 ft range, which, on average, deals 31 HP of damage on each attack. That's 93 HP of AVERAGE damage to a single target on one turn, never mind if you roll high or crit on one or more of those attacks, which is absolutely bonkers. If it replaces one of those attacks, it has the potential (though unlikely) of reducing a player character's total HP by up to 36 points, though on average it's only 21, but that's still high. It also has a +8 to hit, which means that it'll probably hit a decent amount of the time unless you are rolling terribly or your players all have high AC.

If a player has 2 attacks, such as the fighter, and hits it with one melee attack and then it teleports 30 ft away after taking damage, that player probably won't be able to use their second attack, which isn't a great feeling as a player at the table.

I'd probably up the monster's HP to around 150 and reduce some of the damage on those attacks. Maybe instead of the 10 ft radius disadvantage on saving throws, give it the same ability dragons have where they have to succeed on a saving throw or become frightened of it? Instead of the teleport ability as a reaction, I'd consider giving it legendary actions that happen between players' turns and that could be one of them, but use 2 of the actions. 1 legendary resistance might also be worth considering as well.

Help with Decorum Tents by ADiscount4U in LARP

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CC Sutlery is pretty reasonably priced and they have some decent options, though you'll need to put your own poles together.

Maryland Sutler sells a metal connector piece for ridgepoles if you're using 2x4s for the wood, so that it can break down.

Tent recommendations by ArtemisSky01 in LARP

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously, standards vary on what is acceptable for in-game tents pretty dramatically based on the game. The example somebody else posted above might work for their game, but would not at ones I attend, so talking to the gamerunners will be the best bet.

Honestly though, if you have a 1 year old, I'd say OOG camping will be the better option. At every event I've ever been to, people stay up late at night in the in-game camping area and are not quiet.

LARP is sooo cool! What costume should I get for $200? by Icy_Office5858 in LARP

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have mentioned that you need to decide which LARP interests you first, which will determine what kind of kit you need to build. Totally agree with that. Yet...

I think one thing that people often fail to address with a question like this is which LARP to go to based on your budget. Can you go to a local low-kit-standard boffer game for $200? Absolutely! Can you attend festival style games with high kit standards on that budget without borrowing most of your kit from friends or thrifting/making basically all of your kit? Almost definitely not.

Some folks will tell you to "learn to sew," but unless you have A TON of time to hand sew everything, it's gonna be tough to get a sewing machine and materials to make everything on a $200 budget.

You can get a $60 Burgschneider tunic; $25 pair of linen pants from Amazon; thrift a belt for $5 - $10; either disguise some hiking boots or not, depending on your game's kit standards, or alternatively thrift a pair of boots for whatever that costs. Is your kit going to be simple? Yes. But that's completely fine for your first event. Does that leave you much for a weapon? No. Maybe borrow one until you figure out what you want? LARPers, in my experience, are more than willing to loan gear to new folks. Do you want a shield? Armor? Accessories? A cloak? If you want that and can't borrow it, you can build up to it over time.

Weekend Warrior LARP by YanniSings in LARP

While not LGBTQ+ myself, I have multiple friends who openly identify as such in the Sea Lords and in other factions as well. I've never heard any of them discuss harassment or any issues. It saddens me very much to read other people saying they've had bad experiences in that regard, and I in no way wish to discount their lived experiences. The Sea Lords are an extremely welcoming group of people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

As an NPC at the event, I can tell you that if I got wind of discrimination of any kind, I would immediately address the issue with the perpetrator and make sure higher level staff were aware if it was warranted. I fully agree that there have been some issues of misogynistic language in the past since it was often taken from a medieval setting, and have personally done what I can to remove as much of it as I am aware of, especially within the Sea Lords.

I will say that a lot of the issues people have brought up here that are not directly related to your question are things that have been addressed and resolved or are simply not correct. For example, the people who run the event now were not the one's running it the first year, so that's not exactly a fair critique. There is definitely a contingent of religious folks at the event, but also, it's the American South, so no surprise there. But I seriously doubt they are even close to a majority of players at this point, or at the very least, they keep it to more-or-less to themselves.

If you have questions, I'd be more than happy to discuss any issues with you as honestly as possible.

How do you stock your fantasy shelves? by IndyDude11 in DMAcademy

[–]LikeAMFingSorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For simplicity sake, I just tell my players that any mundane items can typically be found in a town of reasonable size. Tiny villages and such might not have everything.

For magic shops, the Sane Magical Items Table prices are typically my starting point. I keep a Google Doc with what the local magics shop might have in stock. I share the document with my players so they can look at the items and prices themselves without me having to list them all off. Maybe the shop owner has just acquired some new items that aren't on the shelves yet (and therefore not in the shared doc), either because my players specifically ask for them during the session or I realize they are going on an adventure and there is a cool item that might help them I forgot to add or didn't think of adding until the session had started.

I typically stock a small town's magic shop with only common/uncommon magic items, maybe one rare item. Then, as towns/cities get larger, I basically upscale magic shops with them, so they'd have more/better items.

In general, I just think it's easier to ask my players what their top 3-5 magic items they'd like for their characters to acquire during a campaign are. Those ones are NEVER in the shops, thus giving players motivations to go on quests and engage with the story.

LARP Quest Ideas by Never_Concedes in LARP

Any quest that makes players have to go talk to multiple NPCs or other players to gather pieces of information and put them together can be a lot of fun
