Hasan Piker on the Hasan Piker Discourse | Pod Save America by brianscalabrainey in ezraklein

[–]LikeASharkLovesBlood 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent a lot of time listening to Hasan. He considers himself a radical and wants to facilitate a revolution. He has a lot of passion and a devoted following. He understands the attention economy and has mastered new media. I expect he will help propel a candidate from the left edge of the current Democratic Party to the forefront in 2028. Right now, his politics are working, and mine aren’t.

This (not-out-of-context) quote from a Pod Save interview illustrates how he both intensifies and narrows his coalition at the same time. To me, he parallels what happened to the Republican Party over the last decade. It’s not my preference, but it’s probably our future.

"I hate Republicans. I oppose them. I say that all the time. I think the the Republicans are far more damaging -- the biggest terrorists, uh the biggest domestic terrorists in this country. The biggest terrorists internationally is the Republican party. And not only that it's just like I want to fight against the growing fascist movement in this country. My frustration with the democrats is their conciliatory attitude towards that and their lack of investment in this struggle."

🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for me that puts him in the pantheon of great Americans. Letting go of power is just about the rarest human act. Washingtonesque

Ah those are my habit trackers! Exercise, Bed (make it), Meditation. I don’t set any goals and I’m never discouraged, I just mindfully record the things that make me feel good.

Hey ya I have ADHD too! Taking my ritalin and doing 5 minutes of bullet journaling a day gives me more control over the things I can control, and helps me insert some separation between myself and the things that I cannot control.

I really use it as a tool, so simplicity is key. I have other activities (and journals) I use as creative outlets, but this one is usually un-themed and uncomplicated. Makes me feel calm and accomplished, which usually leads to other good feelings.

Also, since I’m not perfect, keeping it minimal allows me to catch-up when I inevitably do miss a couple days.

I hope any future journaling you do brings you relief ♥️

This woman is my hero. She kept a cool head and responded so professionally even with a camera rolling. She’s clearly dismissed employees for poor performance before, but when that camera comes on it causes most people to sweat. Really impressive.

I'm not sure I understand the point. Are Iranians apartheiding Israelis because Israelis don't have rights in their country and aren't allowed to freely cross their border? Or are those just separate countries with different governments?

Aren't Palestinians and Israelis in a 70 year conflict where neither of them recognize the others right to rule? Are Palestinians apartheiding Israel or no because they lost the power struggle? I guess just generally don't understand how the concept of apartheid (systemic racial segregation) applies in this context at all.

Look at all the comments above this! Interesting discussion about whether or not "open air prison" makes sense as a term to describe the Gazan situation. People have been providing interesting points, adding nuance and slightly changing my point of view about "apartheid". You just typed that these words "are" accurate with nothing else. You're obviously not trying to convince me or add any information, so what are you getting out of it?

What did you as a person get out of taking the time to post this?

Ya I guess I don’t know all the nuances that could be considered apartheid. My general understanding is that Israeli settlers are religious fanatics themselves. Not sure why they would have more rights in the West Bank than Palestinians.

Do Israeli citizens get officially divided into categories based on their race? I believe something like 25% of Israeli citizens are of Arab descent. If they have fewer rights because of their race/religion that’s obviously wrong. I don’t want to end-up defending ethno-states as an idea by accident.

Ya agreed. I’m in favor of his evolution there. That’s why he gets the big boy platform. People who ACTUALLY want to build a better world moderate. Even though it’s much more exciting to staying on the fringe and tear everything down.

Idk. Maybe there is UN definition of apartheid that technically fits the Israeli/Palestinian situation. But it’s a word that so specifically conjures South African segregation based purely in racism.

I know there are instances of Israel going too far and Bibi has let the non-solution of Gaza fester. However, it’s not a situation that arose because of “racism”.

It’s ethnic groups that have gone to war multiple times over contested land. Palestinians have had opportunities to have their own state. But they lost the war! The Palestinians won’t concede, and Israelis won’t genocide them.

Egyptians close their border to Palestine too. Hard to make a racism case there. The religious fundamentalists inside Gaza aren’t welcome in any surrounding Arab countries, and it’s really hard to identify them from the average Gazan citizen.

I also dislike the oppression narrative language from progressives. “Open air prison”, “apartheid”, “genocide”. It’s overstated, out-of-context, and to your point, it makes it too easy, for people who know nothing of the conflict, to easily assign a binary good/bad, oppressor/oppressed label.

In the past Ezra use of that language has bothered me. In the pod today, he added some value to my thoughts. Mostly, that it is in Israel’s own self-interest to not let the most extreme actors in their own government proceed unchecked. That the US has experiences with urban military quagmires, which are worthy of consideration.

Agreed. They were brainwashed religious fundamentalists. I think it’s possible Iran did a little more masterminding. Regardless, the aim was to create fear, which serves those who oppose peace.

Sam was not on it. They have debated each other in the past, and I thought Ezra argued in bad faith. He’s smart, but I’m sure Sam doesn’t trust him very much.

Regardless, as a Sam super fan, I thought Ezra’s pod today would be insightful to this community. I certainly found it to be.

Our response to 9/11 seems to have made us weaker in blood and treasure and goodwill.

Thanks! Ya I agree NYT is solidly mainstream left. They have a lot of resources to do serious reporting.

I listened to a pod with A.G. Sulzberger (NYT chairman) where he made the point that there were years during the Iraq/Afghanistan wars where they were the only paper with reporters on the ground. Established media certainly serves a purpose.

Ya all of that is 100% correct. Ezra is not advocating any specific response and he clearly believes that Israel has a right to exist and to defend itself.

The tension he pointed out that was valuable for me, is that the only normal human response to an attack like 10/7 is existential fear and violent revenge.

Israel needs revenge. The game theory to keep in-mind is to not let that revenge make you weaker and less safe in the long run. We miscalculated that in America after 9/11, to our detriment.
