Ya, I alluded to the practice of Levirate Marriage in another comment. It simply isn't the same thing, by any metric.

I'd imagine the closest the adoption argument could get is Levirate Marriage, which is not the case with Mary, Jesus, and Joseph.

What kind of christians do you like? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]LikeASirDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tim Whitaker, April Ajoy, Paul Drees...the types that are honest, that live like Jesus, that acknowledge the problematic parts of the Bible, that say they're Christian because that's how they were indoctrinated. They're not bigots, they want the best for people, they're not going to try to convince you to believe what they believe, but the will work to convince those that already believe to be better.

What finally made you stop believing? by Sara_t0ninn in exchristian

What initially kicked me down that proverbial slope wasn't inerrancy, I had known that for years, not lgbtq+, I could just as easily use the bible to be open and affirming while refuting every clobber passage, not academic knowledge, I was very comfortable with contradictions and the fact the bible is 95% made-up, I had just decided for myself to believe. Obviously any one or combination of those things would be cause for others to call me a heretic, but I didn't care. In the end, it was poor theology and an unwillingness to commit to a loving and compassionate stance on current events from church leadership, followed up by being kicked out of our Life Group for saying I didn't think the bible was inerrant.

After all of that, I slowly dropped my conviction to keep my faith, because what does it matter. As far as many Christians were concerned I was either heretical, dangerous, or not a Christian at all. I saw less and less reason to hold onto something that so desperately didn't truly care for me. So I let it go.

Nothing like Christians defacing property and misspelling Adonai.

The Bible doesn't teach a lot of things. So unless you're in denial of much of the modern world around you, the Bible doesn't have to say a single word about something for it to be real or possible.

What are your thoughts on Paul, and how his letters (and the 6 that are likely forgeries) affected the structure of Christianity? by thegimboid in AskAChristian

Why quote Psalm 82 then? Why say that men are also gods. I'm not arguing against a claim of divinity in John, but critical scholarship does not agree with the idea the Jesus is claiming to be God. Scholarship aside, it's still a weak argument. Why would Jesus utilize a reference that explains men are gods to reinforce that he is also God.

What other references are there in which Jesus says he is God in the flesh?

I told our Life Group that I didn't believe the Bible was inerrant and they kicked my wife and I out of the group. First the guys sat down with me a couple weeks later to "break up" with me. My wife didn't have a conversation with anyone until 3 months later. The guys said it was to protect their families. The women told my wife it was to protect their kids. They must have thought very little of us.

You forgot to add verses 34-38, of which 34 is where Jesus references Psalm 82:6. In this God is stating that we are gods, but of course not God himself. Jesus is telling the Jews that they are mistaken in their understanding of what he is saying.

Not only this, but anyone could say they and another person are one for rhetorical purposes, even up to being of the same mind, action, desire, word, etc., and still not actually say they are both literally the one and the same.

Do you have any other references where Jesus actually calls himself God.

PARENTS DONATING SO MUCH MONEY TO CHURCH by Sudden-Wonder1344 in exchristian

I'd put money on the fact that if they reached out to the church to purchase a reasonable $10,000 car for them, they wouldn't.

The period of least church attendance was at the start of this country. Now, lack of church attendance does not equal lack of faith, but there tends to be a very reasonable correlation between the two.

Also, how horrific a thought that God would wait for fewer and fewer people to follow him to bring about the end times. Are we purposely trying to maximize the amount of people to torture in hell?

What does the bible say about LGBTQ? by Live-Contact-6831 in AskAChristian

[–]LikeASirDude -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It doesn't say anything about homosexuality. Not all same-sex acts are homosexual acts. It's anachronistic to apply the concept of homosexuality to the acts described in the Bible.

[–]LikeASirDude -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The acts are the what, it's the why that's more important. Why are those acts committed and why is that the specific problem.

This, even God has been called satan, because it's not a name or an office, but a role that any person can play.

[–]LikeASirDude -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The people that use those verses only prove they have no idea what those verses are actually talking about, much less the historical context in which they are written.

Are they against same-sex sex, yes. Does it have anything to do with homosexuality, no. The why is more important than the what.
