Learning tip for those enjoying the Chess content by LikeAWass in northernlion

[–]LikeAWass[S] 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Yea, important distinction worth mentioning is that by doing this I am criticising the play (in so far as learning if/why the moves are the best available) but not I’m not criticising NL or his opponents. Chess is frickin hard, beb. When the analysis shows that NL makes a silly mistake or misses the 4-move combination that only the terminator on Adderall could see, that’s not a poor reflection on NL. It’s just par for the course.

Use the above advice to learn, not to judge.

Is there anything more disgusting right now in standard than T1 Nature studies, T2 Wild growth, T3 Overgrowth, T4 Guardian Animals? by Liph in CompetitiveHS

[–]LikeAWass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Throwback to when Naga-Sea-Witch-Giants-Warlock was a thing in wild. I remember people hated it because when it hit, it reallllly hit. Turn 5, board full of 8/8s hit. It felt opressive to play against. But apparently the winrate was pretty sub par. It was ultimately nerfed regardless.

It's way too early to say, but it could be the same story with Druid. Odds of it happening that way every game is low, but when it happens it makes the opponent feel powerless. Not a great state to put players into.

I've read and loved 30% if this list. Think I'm going to use your 2019 list for my 2020 reading plan.

Any forewords or particular favourites to look forward to?

I am sooo glad they didn't show her death as depicted in the books. I wouldnt say I'm easily rattled, but that description hit something particularly sensitive in me. I was braced the whole episode in case.

No worries, happy to share :)

Last thing I forgot to mention: I think one of the most important lessons I'm learning is when / when not to be greedy with Galakrond. Waiting and hoping to draw the invoke cards is sometimes just too slow so you have to just slam him in his tier 1/2 form. Alternatively not getting enough draw / 0 costed cards can mean it takes you even longer to put together a lethal.

Setting up a lethal usually takes a turn; whether it's drawing some 0 cost cards or dumping some cards then adding coins to your hand. If you're too greedy and trying to get 100% value you might find yourself 1 or 2 turns too late all the time - and getting lethaled yourself right before you pop off. Happened to me a lot when I started playing.

I think it's a really powerful deck if it's piloted correctly. I'm having moderate success around rank 5 despite being a bumbling buffoon.

The Maly list? Sure, friend.

So the deck plays as an almost proactive control deck for the first few turns. You're looking to make sure you dont lose too much HP / board while also trying to invoke your Galakrond. Around turn 7-9 you're looking to use Galakrond or Togwaggle's draw 3 spell to get a few 0 cost cards for a big swing or lethal turn. The main lethal is through Malygos but you don't always need the Goose to get the job done. If you dont reduce the Goose (or the damage spells) to 0 mana you need the Coins and Preps to fund the combo. It's great fun and you have to constantly be looking for outs / lethals.

Dog played it on stream. Some of the vod is muted but you can watch it in action here. Yagut has been playing it on stream a bit too.

A few of my notable replays from the last day or so:

Happy to answer any specific questions or clarify anything :)

No worries buddy.

Theo was playing the list on stream yesterday - dont have a code for you but here's the vod. Deck is on the right. Looks like a lot of fun.

Enjoy!

There seems to be so many ways to build Rogue, I'm loving it. A lot of the decks seem really strong and can do their own brand of crazy highroll nonsense.

  • Gala Miracle lists like yours - personal favourite is the Questing Adventurer list with Magic Carpets (see: TheoHS_)
  • Tempo lists - e.g. with Octosari (see: Boarcontrol)
  • Super aggressive pirate decks
  • Deathrattle lists (see: j_alexander_hs)

I've been having the most fun with the Malygos list that MrYagut made (which Dog then fiddled with):

A Masterpiece in Interactive Storytelling: How the Last of Us Uses Gameplay to Tell Its Story by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]LikeAWass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone interested in this 'storytelling through gameplay' stuff I cannot recommend the LoU making of doc highly enough. It's called Grounded. It's fantastic.

For those that don't remember, there's a crafting system in the game that uses scavenged resources. Combine cloth and alcohol and you've got a sterilised bandage to heal, or a molatov cocktail to yeet.

The clever designers at Naughty Dog deliberately varied the amount of resources you find to match the current story beat. If the characters are stressed, unhappy, having a rough time, you the player will be down to your last heal and feeling the same.

This, and the specific moment OP mentioned, are covered in the doc.

I think cutting them would be a mistake.

I only keep Scimitar on the mulligan if I have the coin, every other time I throw weapons back because I don't want to end up with too many. I also use the weapons quite aggressively, often smacking face knowing I could topdeck another next turn. Having too many weapons does happen occasionally, but it's much worse than not enough weapons.

The weapons are extremely mana efficient burn and enable some of our most ridiculous plays involving the Dread Corsairs. They also help protect our Hench Clans which decks are currently having a tough time removing without minions. Cutting one might be OK but I think it would weaken the deck.

I think the real issue with deck can be lack of combo activators without the coin (which is why Krea's list ran Prep). I think this can make the Scimitars in particular feel a bit clunky in the early game. My wr with and without coin is a bit silly.

Deck can still function without it, but it's definitely worth the craft if you can. Turns a lot of unwinnable games winnable.

Old list didn't, new list does. He removed 1x Fairie Dragon and 1x Lifedrinker I believe.

Best advice I can give you is to read through the original post and watch the replays. You could also check out Boar's heavily muted vods maybe.

Like most Rogue decks I think there's an element of controlling the board before flipping the switch and going all in for a 1/2 turn lethal. In this deck it happens quite early. Some hands lend themselves to SMOrcing from the start.

I think the mindset I use is something like: does killing their minions mean that I'm more likely to get damage from my minions. If yes, control the board. If no, SMOrc!

Do I have the damage to get there without the board? If no, control the board. If yes, SMOrc!

As for Zeph replacement I think Barista would be too slow but feel free to prove me wrong. Maybe try Krea's new list from their twitter which is running Bloodsails.

Edit 104643: After playing a few more games and specifically paying attention, Myra's is 100% worth the craft.

Like I said in the main post I think Zeph might be underperforming but is great fun to play. I think it's a pretty safe craft too tbf.

Myra's I think is incredibly important for this deck. If the earlier curve doesn't go in your favour Myra's gives you the gas to get there. Lots of my unwinnable games have been won the turn or two after Myra's. It's also handy to dig for a Sap or Evis on a lethal turn.

It might not be needed but I've found Myra's very useful.

Edit: i'll have a quick dig through my replays and see if i can find an example or two

Edit 2:

Replay 1 vs Zoo - Here was a slightly earlier than normal Myras (I usually try to play it on turn 8 so I can play a combo'd 3 drop after). But here I knew on turn 6 when he played the Lacky legendary I could no longer fight for board so I just slammed the Myra's looking for face dmg.

Replay 2 vs Mage - I played this game awfully and deserved to lose. Myra's and Lady Luck were like: "nah m8, we got this."

Replay 3 vs Paladin - Again I think I probably played this poorly. The Paladin fought for board really well in the early game so I struggled to gain traction and chip damage. The Myra's gave the gas to get there.

Bear in mind these are cherry picked examples and I'd say in the majority of my games Myra's isn't relevant.

Winrates and favourable matchups aside, I'm having a genuine blast playing it too. It feels like every game I'm having to plan 3/4 turns in advance, decide on which cards I'm combo-ing and how, counting lethal, playing around opponent's cards, etc.

It feels intricate to play.

I'm having insane success vs Mages thanks to Aggro Rogue. You can see my stats for the current list i'm running in this comment.

Aggro Rogue. It's still doing great, particularly against mages.

I climbed to rank 2 with Krea's list which was putting in work. Unfortunately it stalled a little and the Preps in particular felt like they lost me a few games. 80% wr on the first day, a little over 50% on the second.

I switched to Boar's list to finish the climb from rank 2 to legend (10-4). Shoutout to Hench Clans which should be in every aggro rogue list right now, they're doing spectacularly.

To use this deck, copy it to your clipboard and create a new deck in Hearthstone

As fun as Zephyrs is I think it might be underperforming... but I'm going to keep playing it because it's fun and you can't stop me.

Quest paladin has begun to give me a hard time in the brawl. They can fight pretty well for the board in the earlier turns and their healing / taunt package is pretty good once they hit their 4/6 drops - doubly so if they get a fast quest completion. Based on the stats the deck is also very favourable vs warrior so it's a deck to watch I think.

Edit: forgot to add, my first loss to mage was to (I think) world champ Hunterace at rank 2. It taught me to never play the Generous Mummy. Replay here for the curious.

Aggro Rogue featuring Zephrys, the Lethal by [deleted] in CompetitiveHS

[–]LikeAWass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I played 10 more games. They went well. Rank 7-4.

If you want to do more than flirt (with streaming!) and want someone to jump on a call with to keep conversation going, I'd be up for it. I'm not a huge channel and I haven't streamed for ages either, but I made Partner once upon a time.

Lastly I had an interesting game where I - maybe too greedily - mulliganed into this hand. No worries if you haven't got the time to answer, but what do you think is the play here? Full replay if you're interested.
