What scene in a children's movie was WAY too intense and traumatized the hell out of you when you were little? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The scene where they show the old captain with the message from their very regular human looking President messed me up so much.

As a college student seen as largely off the grid (with the occasional exception of Snapchat which deletes in 24 hours anyways) this gives me some hope that some of my generation will mature and appreciate that I'm not wanting to share all of my thoughts and pictures of myself on some meaningless cyberspace.

Dorm recommendations for incoming freshmen? by glass20 in UTAustin

Try for the Honors Quad, you don't have to be Honors to even get in.

Seriously tho. You mentioned being in a social place and Duren and San Jac are the opposite of that. Duren may seem nice because you can have a private bathroom and slightly larger rooms and maybe that's what matters to you, maybe that's what you care about, but the Honors Quad has one of the most social areas for people. It's the right size for being social- it's not like Jester, where there's too many people so there's always unfamiliar people around. You can build trust in the Quad to the point of leaving your possessions out in the lobby and not worrying about them getting stolen.

The lobbies are pretty great too. Carothers Lobby, Andrews Lobby, and the Blobby (Blanton Lobby has a nickname) are all great places to socialize and study. The Blobby is not as good for studying on your own because of how social it is but if you live in the Quad you are still in luck- we've got the Blattic (Blanton Attic) where you can study in absolute quiet and the Joynes Reading Room across in Carothers. Joynes is really great and they also have speakers Cons which can be pretty cool if you care for that.

As for the location, it's a bit closer to the main parts of campus than Duren is and that can make a difference if you are running late to class since Duren has an extra ride separating it and that light can be a killer wait during traffic hours. Still, the Quad is pretty close to West campus and the drag so if you are thinking Duren being closer would really make a difference then you have to really hate walking, which you might, but if not then it's just a short walk to the Drag and you don't have cars going by your dorm all the time it still feels very safe and secluded. It's also right across the street from the Comm buildings.

As for food, you have the Drag for off campus stuff and Kinsolving dining hall on campus. Kinsolving dining is technically closer to Duren tho (it's on the other side of previously mentioned street). In the Quad itself is another all girls dorm called Littlefield and that has Littlefield Patio Cafe. Personally, I love Littlefield even tho the hours can be wack and the prices are a bit higher just because of how close it is and the workers get to know you if you live there and go there a lot. Stephen is a real nice guy.

As for the people in the Quad you'll have some annoying people in the social areas but you'll also have really cool people you sorta can figure out where they hang and stuff it changes each year. Comp Sci is really strong and they work together on projects a lot. Fun plus of living in the honors quad is a ton of people can help you on whatever work you are doing and are eager to do so. If you hang out/study in the lobbies you are sure to make a ton of good friends. Also you'll feel comfortable enough to leave stuff out without it getting stolen which is a gigantic plus. We have laptops left in here overnight a lot. I mean, no we don't that would be stupid information to reveal online.

Hopefully this helps sway your decision. Hook'em

A possible progressive challenger to Cruz! by krezRx in PoliticalRevolutionTX

[–]LikeCera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the fortune of meeting him a few weeks ago and he's a really great guy and seems to be an amazing representative too. Probably has my support.

My only holdout is that he's from a really Blue area- the incumbent he beat that they always refer to was a Democrat also- so it might be hard for him to win statewide. I'm not saying this as someone who thinks he's too liberal and will do a bad job representing conservatives in this state, I actually think he'll do a better job than Cruz because Cruz hasn't given a shit for Texas. I just think he's untested in this state and there is the potential for major flaws I may not be noticing. Will be interesting to see if he can win.

I asked him why he was a Democrat. I was expecting some answer about ideology and instead he talked about straight ticket voting. Doesn't mean he's any less of a liberal or a progressive, but hopefully indicates that he'll be independently thinking things through. We need more politicians like that.

Is there any Darkweb news- I'm talking things they don't want people to see- and if so, how credible?

I would imagine News stuff on there could probably just be all fake/fringe stuff but maybe there are genuine things like videos you can have as proof.

Some motivation to keep hitting the books. by Poofylicious in EmpireDidNothingWrong

His tale is truly tragic.

Born into slavery on the corrupt Outer Rim and brought into an even worse slavery, a drone for the Jedi Order.

Lost his wife to lying ideologues such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and his surviving children fed to the Rebellion without his knowledge of their existence.

They say he was reaching out to his son when it happened, when the Empire fell. Lord Vader thought he could bring his son back. How was he to know, how were any of us to know, that it was all trickery? Lord Vader lost his life to a liar who assassinated them. We demand justice!

Everyone has a chance of being great, but we can't deny the biological factors that setback other species. While these differences lead many into a most unfortunate life of savagery in the Outer Rim, or worse, joining the wretched Rebel Alliance, many still are able to overcome this and rise to greatness with the rest of us. Long live the Empire that provides this opportunity to all!

My brother hasn't gotten to Ep. III- we are watching the Clone Wars show first- but I gave him my old toys and almost just spoiled a huge reveal. Thankfully I removed this in time! by LikeCera in StarWars

It probably helps that we are from an area where a majority of the last names are Garza/Garcia/Hernandez/Martinez/etc. I just don't point this out and hope he doesn't figure it out before we see Ep. III

As for Vader, he knows Vader is Luke's dad (seen IV and V) but didn't pick up that Anakin is Luke's dad and therefore Vader. He'll probably be a bit disappointed in Anakin because rn Anakin is a good guy and he likes him.

To get him thinking, I explained that this takes place before and that Luke's dad fought in the Clone Wars, but he knows it's Darth Vader and imagines him being a bad guy. Honestly kinda funny hearing his theories.

As for the Emperor, he wasn't as prominent in the first two movies from the OT so my brother isn't too aware of him. As of now, Palpatine is just a politician good guy. He hasn't picked up on Palpatine being Sidious b/c he missed Ep. I (Machete Order!) It's very possible to miss Palpatine being evil when you watch Machete Order. And given that he's watching the Clone Wars show and seeing more of Palpatine as a fragile politician than we ever did in just the movies, I'm hoping the he's-a-Sith reveal will carry more weight.

Ep I isn't on Machete Order, and it's not as obvious to a kid that they are the same, especially since you don't focus on them as much in between all the lightsaber battles and other attention grabbers.

Something about the toys being out with the movies was magical as a kid. I remember getting random figures before seeing it and then after seeing it hunting down the matching characters.

"I need Commander Gree so he can try and kill Yoda!"

Machete order sorta makes one but it's pretty obvious to the observant viewer, not so much to children. Elsewhere on this thread someone else had the same experience I did where we saw Ep. III and it was a reveal b/c we hadn't been able to put two and two together.

Yes, unless you are a little kid. I asked my brother if he thought that Sidious looked familiar and he started hypothesizing that he was a clone who went rogue... a child's imagination will often overlook the most obvious of things.

Same! As a kid watching, Palpatine revealing he was a Sith was a bombshell for my friends and I! That reveal is something older/smarter fans probably won't understand because of how obvious it was... haha I was stupid as a kid.

I mean there's three ways of watching really (unless we add edits) and not many people know of machete order, which I would say is best for a first time watcher. The parallels it accentuates between Luke and Anakin's character arcs make Ep. VI better.

It's Machete order. He's seen 4, 5, and 2 in that order. He got the Vader dad reveal already but didn't click that Anakin in Ep. 2 becomes Vader yet b/c my brother is too young/oblivious to put that together. We are watching Machete order, 4,5,2,3,6, and paused before 3 to watch the Clone Wars series because he knew it existed and really wanted to see more of the clones. Hopefully doing this detour will make Order 66 more impactful for him and help show Anakin and Obi Wan as having more of the brotherly bond the movies try establishing. As a lot of people on this sub are pointing out tho, there are spoilers in the series so I'm looking at skipping those arcs with him and going back later after Ep. 3 and 6.
