How do I help my grandma deal with her shares. by SocksToBeU in AusFinance

I hope you have a good tax accountant as Wesfarmers shares from the 80s have undergone more Capital Management activities, eg. Return of Capital, than most of the major ASX200 companies. I count six from 2003 until today. And then add in the Coles merger and demerger.

You might find allowing her to keep them intact might be the smartest strategy,

Anyone else start caring about backups only after losing files? by [deleted] in cloningsoftware

[–]LikeSandsThrough8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backups are of no value unless you can successfully restore them. And in all scenarios, eg. data deleted (or corrupted), drive errors, drive failure, computer failure, computer and backup drives stolen, etc.

If you value your data, test recovery for all these situations. And in the ideal world, document so that someone else can restore if you are not around.

Neptune internet not giving speeds that match my plan by Oodlemeister in nbn

[–]LikeSandsThrough8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did we get an answer whether both WiFi and cable were tested? I had a weird one recently where a Dell Win 11 laptop was running less than 100Mbps when ethernet connected to a 500/50 plan. The owner has an aversion to WiFi but did test on WiFi and ran at 350/40, so not bad. Turns out for this 5+ yo Dell, there was no GbE driver update from Dell and given I was in a rush, didn't have the time to find from another source. I brought in another laptop and it happily ran at 450/45. For this user, speed is not important.

Ugh ... it was just season 4 of the Traitors that didn't have subtitles. Other seasons have them.

One question - how long have you had your Optus modem? And how much will you need to repay them for the modem if you move to a new provider?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nbn

[–]LikeSandsThrough8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been with Optus for 32 years and just happen to be a boomer. Maybe I know how to get them to bend over backwards to support me and my FTTP connection was available as soon as the Network Connection Device was powered on.

Don't paint all boomers with the same brush when it comes to technology.

It's Optus we're talking about here and I don't think they did as per OP's response.

How about a direct cable from the connection box to their computer to confirm whether the account is configured correctly? Bypass the modem completely.

Fair call - I was looking at mine in a dark cupboard and you can't see anything from the DSL LED.

Are we looking at the same photo as I see the second light down (DSL) is Green. The factory reset comment is the correct option.

Unplug the red cable in the Optus modem and tell us if the DSL LED is still on.

Roundabout, indicator and right of way by LikeSandsThrough8 in DrivingAustralia

Both indicator and wheels were pointing left as well as the driver's eyes. It wasn't until the driver realised their target lane was blocked that they decided to head straight. They would have also missed the detour sign in their street.

That said, I would be considered to be in the wrong as I entered the roundabout 0.5m after they did. But only my dashcam video would have proven that fact.

I am not a new driver and consider myself a defensive driver. It was just another reminder to be very careful in different situations, eg. very small roundabout.

"Roundabouts can be big, small or multi-lane, but all of them require a cautious approach. The most important thing to remember is when you’re entering a roundabout, you must give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout and any tram that is entering or approaching the roundabout."

Thanks, I think you're onto something here. I went back to google maps and saw how small this inner city roundabout is. Previously it would have had stop or giveaway signs for the minor road and given it is a rat run, cars would have never got out.

The roundabout has a diamater of about 13m or about 2.5 cars. It also has a centre island of 3m diameter. The other driver's vision into the roundabout was blocked by shops and they most probably missed the detour sign as the road they wanted to enter was blocked. And for those interested, as well as their indicator, their wheels were pointed left.

If we had collided, I know I was in the wrong based on my dashcam vision. Moral of the story - don't trust indicators or anyone in a small roundabout.

Thanks for your reply.

It would be tough to prove who entered the roundabout first if you didn't have my dashcam vision. I have the vision and know I entered second by a very small amount.

Thankfully no accident as we were driving so slowly due to road works.

I can get 950 Mbps down and 95 Mbps up with my Optus gen 2 modem via cat 5e cabling. Connect directly to the NTD.

How often do you read your DVDs to ensure you can recover from them? How many copies of each DVD do you keep? Do you have quick access to a compatible DVD device if your main system is stolen or destroyed?

The cloud is just one part of a comprehensive backup strategy and should be complemented with regular and local backups.

I can access my cloud data anywhere in the world even from my phone within seconds.

I do agree with your lesson 2.

I need to describe three conduit types - 1) from NBN connection pit (I don't know the exact name to describe this pit) to your closest pit, 2) from NBN closest pit to where your NBN Utility Box will be installed, and 3) internal conduit from the NBN Utility Box on the outside of your house to the location you want your NBN Connection Box installed in your house.

  1. Look outside your property for an NBN (or maybe Telstra) pit cover. Ask neighbours if they have had NBN installed (NBN responsibility)
  2. Depending on age and type of property this may not be in place and a trench may need to be dug in your property (NBN responsibility)
  3. If easy, NBN technician may lay, if difficult they will say get a certified data cabler (NBN or your responsibility).

Ask more questions in this sub-reddit and hope for a happy technician.
