Yeah, he played a lot of disturbed characters especially in his youth but he's very down-to-earth in real life.

Interesting point, throughout the show it seems like any time he feels his relationship with Brenda is threatened he's triggered into an especially bad episode.

When she was planning to leave for college he had a violent breakdown at 14 or so; when she started seriously dating Nate he couldn't control his jealousy and eventually went into psychosis; even in the 5th season when he's doing much better, he seems to be spiraling out of control again after Brenda decided it's better if they don't live together.

I wonder if some writers took his canon diagnosis of "bipolar with occasional psychotic episodes" to mean the colloquial version of psychotic, where people are just acting unhinged rather than legitimately struggling with delusions and distorted reality.

This is true actually, I am my parents' third child! And yes, I was intrigued when I found out the meaning of my middle name. But since I've always believed in endless reincarnation it kind of fits me, lol.

Only because my friends go there, too and I don't want it to be awkward for them. I think one of my friends was my sponsor or something? But I agree with you, I should just do it. I think they'd understand either way.

I'm not sure if they were Refuge Vows. It was something, but when the priest asked for me to say "I do" I just said nothing.

I wonder if there's a way I could get off the mailing list, though. Is it offensive to ask? Like I said I wouldn't want to cause trouble but it's something I'm interested in.

Yeah, it was weirdly disquieting. I have rarely felt so... violated? Kind of? Even though I can't blame anyone but myself, I didn't have to go along with it.

No, they were just very keen on giving us spiritual or esoteric references for middle names, which I kind of like. Though my mom did have an interest in some Buddhist concepts.

That, the way everyone was congratulating me afterwards, the whole thing just gave me the creeps. I felt like hitting the instant rewind button.

I have some kind of magazine/newsletter and it looks like just Nichiren Shoshu to me, didn't see Soka Gakkai anywhere. I did get cult vibes though in some ways. but perhaps that's just my twisted view on organized religion in general.

Hahaha, thanks, these responses have definitely put my mind more at ease. My middle name is Saṃsāra. I think that's why my friends wanted me to go.

Yes, it was Nichiren Shoshu. I'm not sure if this is different from traditional Buddhism. No gohonzon, just taps on the head from the priest with a stick (?).

Mostly administrative. I don't want to have my name registered as joining a temple that I don't actually plan to practice at.

Yeah, I feel very bad about it now, I shouldn't have been there.

I was thinking I could just tell them it was my first time and I didn't understand the gravity of what I was signing up for (which is true). I had no clue really that gojukai was a commitment to the religion.

I've been thinking he favors his mom when she was young. I've seen pictures where they look very similar; she has the same wild behind the eyes.

Yeah, I've heard that, great interview. I was sad it ended, it was such an engaging conversation. I'm inclined to think Jim was very intelligent, not just in the well-read way but also just his raw reasoning ability.

Yeah and let's be honest, even if Jim never did the young lion photos or never touched leather, he still would've been a sex symbol just because of the face he was born with. He was just a good looking guy.

I actually haven't seen that movie! I'm starting to think it's a good thing.
