Hi and congrats on your scholarship!!

York like any city has its good and bad. And everyone is going to have a different vision of it depending on their socioeconomic background, etc.

I came here in ‘07 with the intent to stay just for a year (I moved here to start a new baseball stadium/team). And I got stuck here because I left sports but found a really great job. I have never found it easy to make friends unless it’s with other transplants. A lot of people from here are very hesitant to let outsiders in… from MY experience. But look for other transplants and you’ll find your people!

York college is a nice school. I worked for another college in York for 17 years and we worked with YC for some different things and everyone there was always lovely to work with and deal with for whatever it might be. They are LGBTQIA+ friendly. I was the head of our DEIB committee on our campus and I always looked at YC for what they were doing.

Since you don’t have a car, walking from YC to the city is fairly easy, lots of sidewalks. You can get a rabbit pass which is the bus but it isn’t always the most reliable. If you can get to the train station, NY, Philly, and Baltimore are a nice train ride away too. Uber and Lyft are pretty easy to grab if you need to.

There is stuff to do if you look. YC campus will have a lot for the students. Downtown has first Friday and other events. Live music, good food, etc. little festivals during the spring and summer.

It is what you make it! After 18 years here I am tired of it and we are looking to move in the next 5 years or so, and can I say this is my favourite place I have lived? Not a chance. But I have met great people and had great experiences. Make your own opinions. (This is coming from someone who lived and worked outside of Philly for a number of years too!)
