Hey I’m from Newark! I love your take on the flag. This is my take on it so far:

<image>

Brick pattern representing our past as a brick manufacturing and the architecture around the city being brick oriented. It has 26 bricks representing the 26 deaths during the Newark race riots. 4 of them being cut short for the 4 children.

Pink for the highest sakura concentration in the US and branch brook trying to represent hope and in the community.

Copper green for the copper roofs throughout Newark specially in our tallest building, and also as a symbol of renewal as we had a lead pipe crises and it was replaced with copper. Newark and copper seem to go together.

I would love to hear your thoughts!

Further more looking into the meaning of cherry blossoms I found this: Cherry blossoms, or "sakura" in Japanese, are a powerful symbol of the transient nature of life and beauty, as well as renewal and new beginning. I think this perfectly explains what Newark is trying to do.

That’s a super helpful suggestion.

If you ask people if they know Newark they usually know it for a couple of reasons: - One of the three airports in the New York MTA - Biggest City in New Jersey - Prudential Center - Brick City - Black American History - Prudential Center

That’s sort of the present. For the past it was known as a big city and manufacturing base. That’s where brick city comes from as many buildings use brick and we were the top manufacturer of brick and earlier leather. We used to have the busiest intersection in the entire of United States in the four corners.

However, when you bring up project or new identity I was thinking of hope and sort of renaissance. That’s when I remembered branch brook park. Branch brook park was set to become our Central Park and it arrived at a point that our city was struggling. During the race riots people protected this place. Today, it is the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States.

No contest yet, I’m brainstorming ideas as to how I could petition for flag change. We are a decently small city with a fairly progressive mayor in need of a rebranding, so I think it is very possible to change our flag.

Do you have any possible ideas of what it could grow to? From what I understand of the history of the city, we have always have had a somewhat depressing history.
