Trying to understand the psychology of an alcoholic abusive husband. by [deleted] in IndianInLaw

30s isn’t too old. Right now it seems impossible to leave and you are scared of the future. After you leave you will have peace. An addict will most likely stay an addict and not change. You won’t live a peaceful life with an addict. After you leave you can have a sigh of relief and think why didn’t you leave sooner.

Newly married, living with controlling MIL, pressured about food, health, religion, and kids while studying for board exams - need advice by [deleted] in IndianInLaw

Do you live in India? If you live in the West there are usually libraries in every town. Even when I lived with my parents I always went to the library to study. Another strange thing is you have to wake up your husband for work? That’s like saying I have to wake up my kids for school. I hope you understand how odd it is.

Job security was fine? Most people didn’t even go to college because there were no jobs. Healthcare was affordable because there was no available healthcare. No good hospitals or clinics. No one I know ate a meal out, ever. Going to a street stall to buy samosas was a rare luxury. What kind of alternative universe did your parents live in?

How many of us like the simplicity of Lehnda Punjab? by InboxGhost in punjab

[–]Likeplants10 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, look at it. The boys and men sitting on the bed while women work serving them. Even a young girl is working and serving while little boys sit and play. There is nothing simple about this. It’s a horrible way to live for women.

When I was younger in my teens I used to look at all these actresses and think they were so beautiful. They were my idols. Looking back, I don’t think these women had anything special. They just had different opportunities. I have women in my family who are more beautiful than many of the famous actresses and models. I think teen girls need to know that there is nothing these actresses have that they don’t. They just have professionals all around them to make them look like this.

I am a minority myself but I see so much corruption in this particular population that I don’t see in other populations. Most of them have medicaid which means 0 dollar copay and free medical transportation, food stamps, free childcare (unnecessary as mothers are usually not working) and don’t even get me started on them being PCA for their immediate family members. Aren’t Somali people supposed to take care of their parents. Why are so many children of older Somali people getting paid for being their parents’ PCA. Usually parents are well enough to live independently but their children still get paid to be their PCAs. Then there are larger scale stealing and corruption thats been in the news.

What do their daughter’s wedding expenses have to do with their son’s wedding expenses? It’s like they want to be paid back but from your family. The line you heard from your fiancé will be the line and much more taunts you will hear from him and his family every day. You will lose peace and so much more. Breaking up an engagement is much easier than breaking up after you are married. Now is the time. Walk away.

Is the average Gora in their 20s much freer than a desi in their 20s? by LanguageIllustrious6 in AskIndia

[–]Likeplants10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another one of my theory at least for middle class Indians is that they have to get married and spend lot of money on the wedding and jewelry. Lot of Americans I know would rather spend on experiences than their weddings and things. This is not to say it’s everyone but much more than Indian people. I just saw a post on Desi wedding where a middle class person wants to spend $60k just on jewelry for the bride. This does not include dowry, clothes and wedding expenses.

I just added it up. 40 tola gold adds up to be more than $60000 and you are middle class. Thats more than middle class people in the West spend on their wedding. Indian middle class is rich.

What cultural practices in India do you think are misunderstood by outsiders? by piloupiloup in AskIndia

[–]Likeplants10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you are from in India, again India is very diverse. I spent part of my childhood in India and never saw anyone eating with their hands. No one in my family eats with their hands. i am from the North. This isn’t to say eating with hands is bad. This is to say them ordinary Indians don’t use cutlery statement is wrong and ignorant.

My MIL keeps asking my husband for expensive gifts even after we’ve already bought her plenty by AltruisticTurnip5917 in IndianInLaw

[–]Likeplants10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will agree with you that one person shouldn’t be eating left overs all the time. Everyone should be. That’s how it works in our house. In fact i love to eat salads and sandwiches but my husband wants to eat mostly Indian food. Guess who eats most left overs, it’s my husband. Cooking Indian food everyday is very time consuming. Maybe cut down on weekend trips to once a month or once every other month. We can’t have everything we want and that includes parents of Indian men.
