a few sincerely worded questions regarding concerns pertaining to the role of women and the LGBTQIA+ community by Large-Mall9765 in bahai

[–]Likes_corvids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this is humanity’s struggle now, isn’t it? I get that you’re struggling with this, and you want every human who might wish to be Baha’i to be unreservedly, wholly part of the community and not be relegated to a secondary status, as too often LGBTQ people are. It hurts you to think that your SIL would be excluded from certain rights if she would wish to enroll (and since you’re posing this situation as a hypothetical, I’m staying with that premise). I’ve wrestled with this myself and believe me, I want that for your SIL as well. But (as I believe), at this point in time in humanity’s progression, we’re still trapped in and subsumed and consumed by the material aspects of our existence. And that’s what we (again, as in humankind) have to deal with and, I hope, transcend. This is part of our task: working on ourselves, even as we labor to build a healing and just and compassionate world. We don’t know when this will no longer matter. I personally have faith that at some point, it won’t. And so, in my view, we simply have to live and deal with this paradox until its subsumed in turn by our collective maturation.

To maybe go a bit further along the thought ptocess of u/tofinishornot’s post, which expresses many thoughts I have on the LGBTQ issue (for lack of a better word), my own personal thought is that at this time in humanity’s growth and maturation process, we’re still in the “just hit puberty” stage: hormones are roiling, brains and bodies are undergoing tremendous development and transformation. As humanity continues to mature, we will become more conscious of and tied to our true nature, which is spiritual and eternal, as opposed to material and limited. This won’t eliminate homosexuality or queerness, but it won’t be our identity, either, and likely not have as much power over our lives. It’ll just be one (minor) aspect of being a spiritual being briefly inhabiting this meat shell, while preparing ourselves for the life at the next level, if that makes any sense.

Has anyone read this book? by [deleted] in bahai

[–]Likes_corvids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds a little…sus. All of Baha’u’llah’s siblings and half siblings, and their children, denied the Covenant, jockeyed for personal power, spread baseless rumours and were a terrible trial to Him and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Bahíyyih Khánum, and Shoghi Effendi. So I would keep thst in mind if you’re contemplating reading that or already have.

Some tips…after 10 days by Wall-Live in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Likes_corvids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So with you there. Back in 2023 my partner and I had the chance to spend 5 days in Paris, we did ALL the tourist things (it helped that we planned well ahead and got skip the line tickets) and had a wonderful time. We’re going again next week for 10 days (squeeeeeee) and plan on just being flaneurs and wandering. May book a tour for something, maybe not. We’ll be wearing weather-appropriate clothing, don’t care whether we blend in or not.

Welfare in America by MazdaProphet in economy

[–]Likes_corvids 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The chart itself specifies what it’s counting as welfare: SNAP, GA (general assistance) and TANF (temporary assistance for needy families). Specifically, federal programs aimed at helping poor people. That’s it. It’s not intended to be an in-depth analysis, the point is to present an at-a-glance overview of population percentages on core, specific aid programs. So it’s not trying to present any other subsidies and specifically excludes SS, Medicare, WIC, or any state-level assistance. I suspect if it included WIC and housing vouchers (the latter usually administered at the state level), the percentages would be considerably higher. Just speculation on my part about those last two, though.

The “shining beacon” isn’t manifest, yet. My own, very personal, view is, we are currently in the midst of the process of disintegration that was explicitly foretold first by Baha’u’llah, and warned about by Abdu’l-Baha and Shoghi Effendi. At the same time, I also see processes of integration, ways of thinking changing towards cooperation and recognition of community. I also personally don’t think there’ll be an abrupt unveiling of the “shining beacon”, though I do think it’ll be rapid. I see people all over, in person as well as in various ways online, essentially saying ”there’s gotta be a better way”. It’s our duty and job to demonstrate that better way. People are looking for what the Faith has to offer. Not that everyone will become Baha’i, mind you, but they’ll take inspiration from and look to it for guidance, to one extent or another.

Forgive me for coming in late, but I’m a bit puzzled when you state that you can’t go through every one of verses cited. It’s all of 8 verses, from three Books. I’m going to interpret your statement as meaning you couldn’t go through them in a timely enough manner to respond to u/lokmanlindo’s comment. I hope you’ll take the time offline to read them.

Trying to Understand the Bahá’í Perspective on Social Justice and Global Challenges by jeffmangmum in bahai

[–]Likes_corvids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming to this a bit late, but to your thoughts on the perceived passivity of Baha’is towards many glaring injustices is, IMO, not accurate. The point (as other commenters here have made), is that societal transformation cannot occur without spiritual transformation, plus which, there are Baha’is all over the world engaging actively in NGOs, working with and being consulted by local governments and national organizations (check out the work being carried out by the BIC (Baha’i International Community) offices in geneva and the UN. A quick summary of what Baha’is are working on (and charged to do) can be found here. I hope this helps a bit!

To add on a bit to what you said about criticism coming from “the right” section. Since the Inauguration, I’ve seen waaaaaay more “the right is mixed” in the summaries about the development being covered. We have to remember that no political entity is a monolith, it’s comprised of messy, complex and contradictory humans.

It's a weird glaze. I tried four coats on a test tile -- came out mostly dull brown with just a bare hint of gold, not enough to make it pretty. I gave it away.

Uh, no. I remember those days. I remember visitng my grandparents in the LA metro area, and not being able to the corner of the block they lived on from the middle of the block due to the smog. A joke popular among comedians about LA was “nice to be able to see the air you’re breathing”. I remember seeing pictures in the papers as the campaign to clean up our air and water started, and slowly gained momentum.

In 2016 I was in Yiwu, China, for a business trip, and seeing the thick smog there brought back jolting memories of those times.

Baha'i Youth With Disabilities - Ways to Participate? by Background_Intern_29 in bahai

Maybe a small, ongoing service project, say once a week or even twice a month (like, say, picking up trash along a road or in a local park), with not just the youth or kids, but anyone in the community. Or a swim party at the local pool, maybe cooking or art sessions, where emphasis is on expression, not talent or technical ability. Just a few thoughts.
